Legendary tokens come in many forms. Some act as win conditions, while others function as a second body that enters with or replaces another creature. Legendary tokens make some cards into essentially two permanents for the price of one, which historic and legendary-matters decks just love.
Iโve got all of Magicโs legendary tokens lined up, from clunkers to downright game-enders!
What Are Legendary Tokens?

Voja, Friend to Elves | Illustration by Chris Seaman
Legendary tokens are game objects that are created by other game objects, usually (but not always) by Magic cards. A few legendary tokens are created by secondary game pieces, like dungeons. Legendary tokens are all permanents with the legendary supertype, which means that theyโre subject to the legend rule.
Note that these arenโt effects that create token copies of creatures and permanents, but rather effects that generate their own, often unique tokens. Some legendary tokens are made by a few different cards, and a few other legendary tokens need multiple, specific cards in play before you can create them.
And no, the gnomes that tinker with our text and images havenโt goofed up. Some of these tokens have just never been printed, either in paper or digitally.
Unranked: Prisoner Zero
Created by: The Eleventh Hour
This skirts the rule of not having cards that generate copies of other permanents, but The Eleventh Hour also changes the name of the creature that youโre copying to, you guessed it, Prisoner Zero. We donโt have a specific token card for this ability; youโll probably use a Copy token instead.
The rest of this sagaโs abilities are centered around doctors, specifically the creature type (hello, Arcade Gannon). The best home is probably either a 4-color or 5-color The Fourteenth Doctor deck, whether youโre running it on its own or with a doctorโs companion.
Unranked: Xenagos Ascended

Created by: Defeat a God Challenge Deck
Xenagos Ascended comes to us from Journey into Nyxโs Defeat a God Challenge deck, part of the Heroโs Path event. The Defeat a God begins with Xenagos Ascended and two Rollicking Throngs on the battlefield, and the point of the event is to beat the deck by removing all revelers, then Xenagos itself. It technically counts as a legendary token, so here it is.
Unranked: Temmet, Vizier of Naktamun

Created by: Temmet, Vizier of Naktamun
This just feels like it doesnโt capture the spirit of the โlegendary tokenโ thing. Temmet, Vizier of Naktamun exists both as a card and as a token because it has an embalm ability. The tokenโs only as good as the original. (Thank you, Bloomburrow, for not giving us a legendary creature with offspring.)
#32. Mowu

Created by: Jiang Yanggu
Mowu is a good boy. Now I have to cover his ears becauseโฆ wellโฆ I only see this card as a โmaybeโ in dog decks and planeswalker/proliferate decks. I like Jiang Yangguโs ultimate ability as a late game pump, though.
#31. Urami

Created by: Tomb of Urami
Iโm sorry Urami, but a 5/5 flying demon isnโt worth sacrificing all my lands in most decks. My Treasure, Powerstone, or other mana artifact token generation has to be off the charts, or Iโve got to have some way to get my lands back from the graveyard.
Otherwise, Tomb of Urami is functional as a pain land if you need some extra ways to lose life in your deck, like Betor, Ancestor's Voice.
#30. Tuktuk the Returned

Created by: Tuktuk the Explorer
Thematically? Tuktuk the Returned and Tuktuk the Explorer make a fun pair. You donโt even need to dive deep into Magicโs story to understand whatโs going on here. But in terms of gameplay, you get two creaturefall triggers for your Impact Tremors and two bodies to sacrifice to Goblin Bombardment, and thatโs pretty much it.
#29. Ashaya, the Awoken World

Created by: Nissa, Vastwood Seer / Nissa, Sage Animist
Ashaya, the Awoken World is Nissa, Sage Animistโs -2 and is pretty much just a 4/4 elemental. To me, youโre running this Nissa card for how it can help your land strategy, especially for the planeswalker ultimate that gives you mass land animation. The legendary token is fine, but itโs not the reason that youโll play this flipwalker.
#28. The Atropal

Created by: Tomb of Annihilation dungeon
Legendary tokens can be weird because they come from just about anything, even cards that live outside the battlefield. The Atropal is your reward for completing the Tomb of Annihilation dungeon, and itโs a 4/4 god horror with deathtouch.
Dungeons are a fun way to take advantage of Obeka, Splitter of Secondsโ extra upkeeps, but itโs a fairly niche strategy thatโs only really supported in Forgotten Realms and Baldurโs Gate, and itโs not quite as easy to enable as the initiative.
#27. Guenhwyvar

Created by: Drizzt Do'Urden
Weird combination of abilities here. Guenhwyvar has enough power to give Drizzt Do'Urden its first +1/+1 counter, but you need other sources of counters or some lords and anthems to make Drizzt stronger. Your legendary cat token is a glass canon and doesnโt have much else going on.
#26. Primo, the Indivisible

Created by: Zimone, All-Questioning
Whenโs the last time you had to think about prime numbers? I admittedly donโt have many reasons to in my day-to-day life, but I guess math teachers everywhere have something they can use as a teaching aid.
Zimone, All-Questioning (Descartes, eat your heart out) is the kind of card that could sit in your hand or your command zone waiting for the right turn to cast it, since you need a prime number of lands on your end step to get Primo, the Indivisible. Incredibly situational, and Iโve already got a headache.
#25. Jumblebones

Created by: Ozox, the Clattering King
I like the relationship between Jumblebones and Ozox, the Clattering King. Each has a death trigger; Ozoxโs trigger makes Jumblebones, and Jumblebonesโ trigger returns Ozox to your hand. Neither creature can block, though, which is likely part of why itโs not as popular a commander as some of the other Foundations Jumpstart cards.
#24. Cherubael

Created by: Inquisitor Eisenhorn
Charubael and Inquisitor Eisenhorn fit in with Clue commanders, but thereโs not much to say here. The inquisitorโs ability to give you a legendary flying demon token is repeatable for the first card you draw each turn, so in theory, you can also take advantage of payoffs for when your tokens enter or die like Marneus Calgar or Mirkwood Bats.
#23. The Hollow Sentinel

Created by: Venser, Corpse Puppet
The Hollow Sentinel comes from Venser, Corpse Puppet, a card that encourages you to build around artifact creatures and proliferation. Itโs one of those dual-theme cards that feels like it could have been a precon, given the split focus. The nice thing is that Venser gives you an easy way to get another Hollow Sentinel, though I kind of wish there were an easier way to play this in a Grixis artifact or artifact creature deck.
#22. Phobos

Created by: The Spear of Leonidas
Kassandra, Eagle Bearer tutors for The Spear of Leonidas, and the spear can create a legendary horse token named Phobos. Thatโs a lot of value from one creatureโs enters ability and an equipmentโs attack trigger. Donโt get me wrong; I like the combination. But Phobos feels like an afterthought. Iโll usually want a double strike attack or a rummage than a slightly wider board.
#21. Stangg Twin

Created by: Stangg & Stangg, Echo Warrior
Stangg, Echo Warrior is a vast improvement over Stangg, so much that I donโt want to talk about the older card at all. Both give you a Stangg Twin token, though Stangg, Echo Warrior makes things interesting by cloning the auras and equipment you attach to it. The token isnโt much to write home about, but what you do with itโฆ Iโm starting to get brewing ideas.
#20. Vecna

Created by: Eye of Vecna + Hand of Vecna + The Book of Vile Darkness
Kaldra, but make it D&D. Vecna has all the triggered abilities of its component permanents, plus indestructible to help keep it around. The token is good, but the triple black mana pips on The Book of Vile Darkness make it harder to play outside of mono-black decks. Itโs a pretty flavorful inclusion if youโre doing a Cecily, Haunted Mage and Othelm, Sigardian Outcast deck for your Stranger Things cards, though.
#19. Icingdeath, Frost Tongue

Created by: Icingdeath, Frost Tyrant
Icingdeath, Frost Tongue is the legendary equipment token you get when Icingdeath, Frost Tyrant dies. Itโs a white dragon for decks that want white dragons, and itโs on-theme for decks like Hylda of the Icy Crown that want to tap down their opponentsโ creatures.
#18. Tiny

Created by: Sophia, Dogged Detective
Tiny is designed to be the legendary token that enters alongside Sophia, Dogged Detective, a backup commander for Murders at Karlov Manorโs Deep Clue Sea precon. The token itself is basically a bear as a 2/2 with trample, and the card that makes it fits alongside artifact tokens and dogs alike.
#17. Laserbeak + Ravage

Created by: Soundwave, Sonic Spy / Soundwave, Superior Captain
How many cards do you know that create two different legendary tokens? Soundwave, Superior Captain gives you either Ravage or Laserbeak depending on the mana values of the spells you cast; this is one of the Transformers cards youโll likely cast for its more than meets the eye cost more often than not. Esper () isnโt the first color combination I think of for a token deck, but Soundwave gives you a reason to do it.
#16. Karox Bladewing

Created by: Verix Bladewing
Two-for-one bodies, this time with kicker. Dragons have enough cost reducers that you can often get both Karox Bladewing and Verix Bladewing for 5 mana. There are definitely more impactful dragons at that point in the mana curve, but this pair does a decent job helping to keep those pricier dragon decks on-budget.
#15. Voja + Voja, Friend to Elves + Voja Fenstalker

Created by: Tolsimir Wolfblood / Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves / Tolsimir, Midnight's Light (respectively)
With 5/5 power and toughness to go with its trample ability, Voja Fenstalker is objectively the best token that Voja has ever had. Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves is the better commander, while Tolsimir Wolfblood is the best general support piece. Youโre likely using these in wolf decks, though the oldest Tolsimir works in any Selesnya () creature deck.
#14. Voloโs Journal

Created by: Volo, Itinerant Scholar
Volo just wants to complete his Pokรฉdex. Itโs hard to interact with Volo's Journal given its hexproof ability, and it can be a good source of card draw in a deck with a variety of creature types. Its best fit is with Volo, Guide to Monsters, of course, but other decks that arenโt aiming for creature type synergies can use it for a source of extra cards, and they can use Volo as a source of two historic permanents.
#13. Keimi

Created by: Tatsunari, Toad Rider
Sultai () enchantress, anyone? Tatsunari, Toad Rider and Keimi both want you casting enchantments, either to get your legendary frog or to leech away your opponentsโ life. Two mana is all it takes to make them both unblockable, but of course there are auras that accomplish the same thing. Rider and toad are truly in sync.
#12. Cragflame

Created by: Mabel, Heir to Cragflame
Definitely one of the cuter card combinations among legendary tokens and the cards that make them. Mabel, Heir to Cragflame brings the Cragflame token along when it enters. Itโs a mouse lord, sure, but youโre also in good colors for equipment and their payoffs. The Cragflame token grants a stat buff along with vigilance, haste, and trample, so Mabel isnโt a bad budget inclusion with other equipment commanders.
#11. Kaldra

Created by: Helm of Kaldra + Shield of Kaldra + Sword of Kaldra
You need all these Kaldra themed equipment to activate Helm of Kaldraโs ability. Kaldra itself has good stats as a 4/4, but all of these equipment auto-attach as part of the Helmโs ability to grant the avatar token haste, trample, first strike, and indestructible, not to mention a +5/+5 stat pump and a removal ability that works nicely with punch and fight spells. Itโs 11 mana to bring all these equipment out โfairly,โ so assembling Kaldra can be a risky investment, but itโs a powerful combination once you get there.
#10. Tamiyoโs Notebook

Created by: Tamiyo, Compleated Sage
Sheโs got a Logbook, a Journal, and a Notebookโฆ I get it, Tamiyo. Iโm also a sucker for stationary. Tamiyo's Notebook is the ultimate ability you get from Tamiyo, Compleated Sage. Itโs much more interactable than an emblem, and it simply taps to let you draw a card while giving all your spells cost reduction. Yay for its abilities, but boo that you lose your legendary token to artifact removal.
#9. First Mate Ragavan

Created by: Baral and Kari Zev
Spellslinger decks appreciate two-for-one creature cards, since they want to fill their slots with instants and sorceries. Baral and Kari Zev can bring along First Mate Ragavan, and timing is everything. You can bring out Ragavan as a chump blocker during an opponentโs turn, or you can use it to widen your board before you attack. It also has the perfect power (2) to sacrifice to Anhelo, the Painterโs casualty ability.
#8. Scion of the Deep

Created by: Kiora, the Rising Tide
Scion of the Deep is a legendary octopus you can get from enabling Kiora, the Rising Tideโs threshold ability. Kioraโs mono-blue identity lets you use it with self-mill decks and discard decks, and it slots in nicely alongside sea creature commanders.
#7. Ragavan

Created by: Kari Zev, Skyship Raider
This Ragavan token only exists during combat unless youโve got Kari Zev, Skyship Raider around. Kari Zev is a 2-mana pirate that fits in nicely with decks that care about pirates and legendary permanents. Decks like Samut, Vizier of Naktamun or Neriv, Heart of the Storm that care about creatures that entered this turn also take advantage of continuous Ragavan tokens.
#6. Avacyn

Created by: Battle at the Helvault
Big angels with keywords are good, full stop. Battle at the Helvault wraps up and gives you Avacyn, a legendary token with flying, vigilance, and indestructible. An 8/8 in the air thatโs hard to block and that sticks around as a blocker is worth waiting or proliferating for.
But you know what? I like the idea of manipulating the sagaโs lore counters so that it stays around and youโre just constantly exiling everybodyโs permanents.
#5. Beau

Created by: Bonny Pall, Clearcutter
Beau is a good payoff for playing lots and lots of lands. Bonny Pall, Clearcutter helps to fuel that by letting you play an extra land from your hand or graveyard when you attack, an ability that works whether youโre tutoring lands to your hand or self-milling them into your graveyard.
#4. Mechtitan

Created by: Mechtitan Core
A no-brainer to include alongside any vehicle commander. Mechtitan is fairly trivial to assemble, especially when you rely on Thopter token generators to give you creatures for crew abilities. Mechtitan has a great combination of combat keywords, and itโs not that bad if your giant construct gets removed since you get everything but the Mechtitan Core back when it leaves.
#3. Boo

Created by: Minsc, Beloved Ranger & Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes
Boo comes in as a hasty trampler, regardless of which card generates it. Minsc, Beloved Ranger only gives you a hamster when it enters, but its activated ability is a mana sink that pumps up a creature of your choice. This Naya () Minsc card is sometimes used as a Birthing Pod commander.
Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes is far better and more useful. The planeswalker version gives you a repeatable way to get Boo out onto the field and gives you an ability that helps you grow your creatures and a fling ability on the other. If youโre flinging a hamster, you get card draw. Itโs a fairly popular commander, but you can use it in support of other decks with high-power tramplers and haste creatures.
#2. Smaug

Created by: There and Back Again
Saga commanders, treasure commanders, and dragon commanders all want There and Back Again and the Smaug token that comes as the last chapter resolves. The 14 Treasures you get when Smaug dies is a lot of ramp, and thatโs before you add cards like Xorn to the mix.
#1. Marit Lage

Created by: Dark Depths & Marit Lage's Slumber
Marit Lage is one of the most notorious legendary tokens in all of Magic. A 20/20 indestructible creature attacking you in the air can spell game over for a lot of decks, especially when you start at 20 life. And if youโre ever asking yourself whether you need to run more land destruction, the combos that come from Dark Depths and Thespian's Stage should give you at least one compelling reason to say โYes!โ
Marit Lage's Slumber is the snow deckโs path to this large avatar token. It can also be a 2-mana legendary enchantment that scries if your deck cares about any of those variables, but you arenโt getting the most value from it if youโve got no snow.
Best Legendary Tokens Payoffs
Legendary tokens benefit from some of your more general token payoffs. Blood Artist and other aristocrats are especially good if you plan to make extra legendary tokens that youโll immediately lose to the legend rule.
Many cards that create legendary tokens do so when they enter the battlefield, but some are a lot more repeatable. Any cards that care about legendary permanents or historic permanents might appreciate cards that work as a two-for-one. Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful grows with a +1/+1 counter each time a legendary permanent enters, something you can trigger by attacking with Kari Zev, Skyship Raider, for example.
Commanders like Neriv, Crackling Vanguard and Gimbal, Gremlin Prodigy reward you for having differently-named tokens, so legendary tokens are a natural way to increase your payoffs.
If you want to get around the legend rule, The Master, Multiplied has you covered. It also prevents you from sacrificing or exiling those more ephemeral legendary creature tokens.
Wrap Up

Boo | Illustration by Zoltan Boros
I donโt think weโll ever stop seeing legendary tokens in Magic, and itโs always possible that weโll get something to rival the likes of Smaug and Marit Lage. Theyโre the kinds of cards that lead to your best post-game stories; youโll have fun annoying your friends by reminding everyone about the first time you pulled off your Dark Depths/Thespian's Stage combo, and itโs those kinds of fun, โI canโt believe I did thatโ moments that make this game so fun.

About Mechtitan, it returns everything *except* Mechtitan Core to the battlefield. I really do wish that it was that repeatable though.
Oh, you’re absolutely right Clover, I’ve fixed that.
Thanks!
