Bloomburrow fittingly enough, brought the cutest Magic set in history and the cutest mechanic ever.

I mean, have you seen offspring's cute lil' tokens!?

Coruscation Mage (Offspring token)

Offspring isn’t just all cutesy, though. Like the plane it comes from, this keyword has sharp teeth and some of the offspring creatures make a big difference in Magic formats. Let's look at how the offspring mechanic works and share some ideas on how to fit it into your next deck!

How Does Offspring Work?

Offspring is an additional cost you may pay when you cast creatures with the offspring ability. If you pay the additional cost, you make a 1/1 token copy of the “parent” creature when it enters.

You can pay a creature's offspring cost only once, so you only get to make a single “kid” copy. The enters part of offspring is a triggered ability, though, so if you have ways to double the ability, you could make extra copies that way.

The “kid” copy has the same name, creature type, mana value, and all abilities of the “parent” creature.

Prosperous Bandit

For example, the offspring of Prosperous Bandit is also a 3-MV raccoon rogue (and therefore a lil' outlaw) with first strike that creates Treasure tokens whenever it deals combat damage to a player.

Thundertrap Trainer

Offspring copies the enters abilities of the original card. If you copy a Thundertrap Trainer with offspring, when the “kid” enters it also lets you look at the top four cards of your library and put one in your hand.

The only difference between “parent” and “kid” is that the “kid” is a 1/1, and it's a token creature.

If a truly heartless opponent removes the “parent” creature while the offspring trigger is on the stack, you'll still create the offspring token when the trigger resolves. The “kid” faithfully remembers its “parent,” even if the “parent” is gone when the “kid” enters the battlefield.

The History of Offspring in MTG

The offspring ability was introduced in Bloomburrow in August 2024.

According to Magic's Head Designer Marc Rosewater, offspring was one of the first mechanics designed for the MTG set. They just loved the mechanic the moment they saw it, and offspring was such a cute idea that WotC decided to print tokens for all the offspring creatures, with the “kids” getting their own art.

The cuteness level was so high that a sacrifice theme was dropped from Golgari (). Originally, the black-green squirrel archetype was going to have a creature sacrifice theme, but that worked against Bloomburrow‘s fuzzy feel and was abandoned.

Bloomburrow is the first Magic set with this mechanic, and later sets will show us if it becomes deciduous or evergreen. The flavor is connected to Bloomburrow, and its cuteness would feel off in darker sets like Duskmourn. But offspring's so flavorful that I see at least a couple of offspring creatures here and there in future Magic sets.

Does Offspring Trigger ETB?

Yes, any ETB will trigger for both the card and the token when they enter.

Does Countering Stop Offspring?

Yep, a counterspell stops the “parent” spell in its tracks (or on the stack). Since offspring triggers only when the “parent” enters, a counterspell negates the whole thing.

A Stifle effect also works on the offspring trigger. In that case, the “parent” still enters, but the “kid” is stopped.

How Many Times Can You Offspring MTG?

Each parent card can only have offspring once when they are cast. In the case of flicker, you do not have the opportunity to pay the offspring cost, but if a card is bounced back to the hand, you would be able to recast it and get offspring again.

Does Offspring Copy the Creature Type and Name?

Yes. Offspring copies everything printed on the original creature, including creature types and names.

Offspring doesn't copy things like auras or equipment attached to the “parent,” though. Just the text on the card itself.

What About Mana Value?

The offspring token also copies the mana value – it's the exact same as the original “parent” card.

Is Offspring a Keyword Ability?

Yes, offspring is a keyword ability introduced in Bloomburrow.

Is Offspring an Additional Cost?

Indeed! Offspring is an optional, one-time additional cost.

You don't have to pay it if you don't want. You can't pay this additional cost more than once per offspring instance.

Can Cards Change the Offsprings 1/1 Power and Toughness?

Yes, sometimes a card can change the 1/1 power and toughness on an offspring token. Say I have Zinnia, Valley's Voice and pay to cast Crackling Drake with offspring, the token will basically ignore the N power and be a 1/1 with flying and draw you a card.

On a related note, cards that modify power or toughness outside of their base stats like Rielle, the Everwise or enter with +1/+1 counters will still see benefits to their stats as offspring tokens.

What Happens When I Copy an Offspring?

If I copy an offspring token, the copy will also be a 1/1.

And there's one rare corner case in Bloomburrow: If the original creature is copying something else when the offspring ability resolves, the token enters as whatever the original creature copied, except it's a 1/1.

Offspring vs. Kicker

Finch FormationSkyclave Relic

Saying that something is “the same as kicker” is a bit of an MTG meme, but it's fairly accurate in this case. Take for example Skyclave Relic.

Except for Skyclave Relic being an artifact and getting two copies rather than one, this kicker effect is pretty much like offspring.

Kicker effects sometimes have broader applications, though: Tear Asunder, for example, can choose different targets if kicked.

But in the sense of “Do this thing if you pay the normal cost; you can also do this other thing if you pay an additional cost,” offspring is pretty much a kicker variant.

Does Offspring See an X Cost Paid?

For example, if I have a Zinnia, Valley's Voice and Magus Lucea Kane, then I cast my X spell, Hydroid Krasis for and pay for the offspring cost. Because the Krasis is cast, I get the card itself, then the offspring as a 1/1 with two of the +1/+1 counters, plus Magus Lucea Kane copies the parent, resulting in another 0/0 that gets two +1/+1 counters, but offers no chance to pay the additional offspring cost again.

Gallery and List of Offspring Cards

There are 20 offspring creatures in Bloomburrow between the main set (BLB) and the Commander cards (BLC), as well as Zinnia, Valley's Voice, which grants the ability to other creatures.

The mechanic is spread fairly evenly across all colors.

Best Offspring Cards

#5. Darkstar Augur

Darkstar Augur

Dark Confidant, but with a kid and as a flier! Three mana is a lot more than 2, but with how powerful the original version is, Darkstar Augur will always have a home to return to in constructed. And this bat warlock is a bomb for Bloomburrow Limited!

#4. Agate Instigator

Agate Instigator

Another pinger lizard that brought their kid to work, Agate Instigator is Impact Tremors in creature form. It's a Commander exclusive, so you won't have to endure what it feels like to play against this card in Standard Boros () Aggro.

#3. Starscape Cleric

Starscape Cleric

Starscape Cleric is aggressive and a pair of them turn lifegain instances into real life-dropping power. Watch out for vampires to follow this and you might be able to avoid falling prey to a Sanguine Bond combo.

#2. Coruscation Mage

Coruscation Mage

The speed at which Coruscation Mage, its offspring and prowess are triggered is what makes this an especially dangerous otter.

#1. Iridescent Vinelasher

Iridescent Vinelasher

Iridescent Vinelasher ranks high as one of Magic's best lizards and one of the best cards from Bloomburrow. It's a very efficient landfall pinger, and it works doubly well with any trigger doubler. You'll first get an extra “kid” from the offspring trigger, then the whole Iridescent family pings 2 per land. I start with four of these in my Lizards brews of Standard decks.

Decklist: “Power to the Offspring” Arena Starter Deck Duel Upgrade

MTG Arena gave “Power to the People” with the Starter Deck Duel and though it is no longer featured, this upgraded decklist is a nice jumping off point for a deck that is all about small creatures with good triggers.

And what do you know: Most offspring creatures are small, offspring is a triggered ability, and many of the offspring creatures have additional triggered abilities. A match made in heaven!

This deck won't break Standard, but you learn whether or not you enjoy the offspring mechanic (and the ensuing trigger-fest) enough to upgrade it further. One key addition and rare wildcard worth crafting is Valley Rotcaller. Though it can't create offspring like Starscape Cleric, it sees the little ones and counts them as full members of the pack.

Offspring is on the one hand pretty much like kicker, and on the other hand the cutest MTG mechanic ever. Your foes would have to be monsters to point their removal at so much cuteness!
