Everything Revealed from Reality Fracture’s Spoiler Season Debut

Everything Jace Beleren has been scheming is coming to a head in Reality Fracture, Magic's first “What If?” set since Time Spiral block. We're expecting some color-shifting, some planeswalker shenanigans, and a healthy does of multiversal mischief. Here's everything new spoiled on Tuesday during Magic's debut of the set.

Reality Fracture Official Previews

First up is the new “empower Jace” mechanic, which is this set's way of showing that Jace is all over the place without printing a ton of individual Jace planeswalkers. You'll see this Jace planeswalker token across multiple cards. The mechanic works a lot of amass, except you're growing the loyalty on a planeswalker instead of +1/+1 counters on a creature.

There's a lot of emphasis on planeswalkers, especially with the “mirrored pairs” that'll be appearing side-by-side in booster packs. Each Play Booster contains three of these cards, two of which will be a guaranteed mirrored pair of one another.

Of course, planeswalkers show up in a ton of card art for cards not necessarily related to planeswalkers in gameplay.

Karn was a mirrored pair we had not previously seen before the debut. He flip-flops from the colorless version we're familiar with the a 5-color artifact creature in this alternate universe.

The mirrored pairs aren't all planeswalker characters either, as showcased by Ghalta the Unstoppable and their more pacifist mirrored version, Ghalta the Immovable.

There will also be mirrored pairs for the original Lorwyn Five, though that probably excludes Jace.

Colorshifted versions of classic cards has been one of the selling points of this set. Here we see a white version of Rise of the Dark Realms, as well as a green take on Phyrexian Obliterator.

Moving into Hexhaven-related cards, they revealed a number of different full-art basics depicting vertical spirals for each of the Hexhaven schools.

It was also confirmed that the slow land cycle introduced in Secrets of Strixhaven will be completed in Reality Fracture. These are reprints from Midnight Hunt/Crimson Vow, but will be re-entering Standard through this set.

The elder dragons of Strixhaven are being replaced by elder sphinxes in Hexhaven. These are aligned with the allied color pairs and are each associated with one of the schools.

Alongside the elder sphinxes, we were treated to a look at some of the essential tokens associated with their schools. Constrari (RG) uses Heartwood tokens, Stingerquill (RB) uses cadets, and Vigorbloom (GW) uses Lotus tokens.

Prepared is coming back in Reality Fracture, though with a small twist that a lot of the lower-rarity cards within each school share the same prepared spell. That does not trickle up into the rares, it seems.

There's a large number of alternate frames and treatments in the set, which is to be expected. Here we see the “Sculptor's Stronghold” frame on a few of the previously spoiled cards.

Braintwister and Shattered Mirror treatments had already been revealed before this debut, though we have a look at a few of the newer cards in these frames. Shattered Mirror cards can come in a new “facet foil” treatment in Collector Boosters.

There will be borderless versions of 15 of the echoes pairs, depicting a single scene split across two cards.

Japan Showcase cards also return in this set. These are also Collector Booster exclusives and appear in English, except in Japanese boosters, which have the cards in Japanese. Japan Showcase cards have a very small chance of coming in “fracture foil”, which tend to be super expensive cards.

Special Guests will be back as well, and have a panoramic art style across the cards.

Looking Ahead

Reality Fracture prerelease kicks off on Friday, September 25, followed by the full release the week after. Unfortunately it won't be sticking around for long before Star Trek takes over, but here's to hoping the last in-universe set of the year is a good one!
