Eulalia!! That’s the war cry of the hares and badgers in the Redwall series, a collection of novels centered around mighty mice, bloodraged badgers, heroic hares, wily weasels, and all assortment of other sword-wielding woodland creatures. And now, it seems MTG’s taking a stab at its own version of this universe.

If you find the thought of rodents and critters engaging in glorious Arthurian combat exciting, love Reepicheep from The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis, or if you too were scarred by that animated version of Watership Down as a child (you know exactly what I’m talking about), I invite you to take a look at Bloomburrow, Magic’s cutest and most ferocious set yet.

About the Set: The Story

Bloomburrow Art | Illustrated by Alessandra Pisano

Bloomburrow begins what Magic lore is referring to as the “Dragonstorm Arc.” While nothing’s really known about this storyline at the moment, it’s intended to be a direct follow-up to the “Omenpath Arc,” which encompasses the stories from Wilds of Eldraine up through Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Starting with Bloomburrow, the Dragonstorm Arc is set to include four sets, up through the announced return to Tarkir in 2025. After that, the story will shift to a third and final arc, which combined with the Omenpath and Dragonstorm Arcs comprise an overarching story currently nicknamed the “Metronome” storyline.

Of course, at the time of writing, we’re still early into the first of these arcs, so pretty much nothing is known about where Bloomburrow or the Dragonstorm Arc fit into the picture. For now, we have to work with some awesome concept art for the set.

Speculation

Though little is known right now, Bloomburrow’s proposed setting of a world of magic-wielding, sword-brandishing mice and other woodland creatures gives us something to build from.

One fact we do know is that there are no human creatures native to the world of Bloomburrow, which opens up the door to more support for creature types that don’t get too much love. We can expect an assortment of mice, wolves, insects, squirrels, birds, raccoons…. Basically, picture that scene from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs where all the animals flock to her, and just remove Snow White from the picture. That’s probably Bloomburrow in a nutshell. We do know that Bloomburrow adds to the roster of rabbit commanders.

I expect some very creative weapons and equipment that are built and used by animals.

Craigflame token

I’m imagining a large number of forested locations within the Valley, which paves the way for dryads, treefolk, etc. to make a return. We have a few card images that give us a general feel for the atmosphere we can expect in Bloomburrow.

As far as mechanics, what can we expect from a world inhabited by relatively small creatures? I like the idea of monstrosity making a return to represent some of the more carnivorous and deadly creatures. I’ve also suspected “amass squirrel” was on the horizon ever since the amass change in Tales of Middle-earth, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see amass make a return here. Food could easily be a central theme, though that’s been used quite a bit lately. In fact, I’m losing my mind a bit since the set symbol is a leaf not an acorn. No, not those acorns you silly goose.

I’m curious if there’ll be any returning characters in this set. The setting seems out of place for most of the planeswalkers we’ve seen, so maybe we see a non-human relative of Kellan, Daring Traveler as a featured walker?

It would be weird to see Garruk or Jace teaming up with The Rescuers Down Under or whatever. Maybe Arlinn Kord or Jiang Yanggu/Mowu will make an appearance? They’re associated with various wildlife, after all. The woods don’t seem like a great place to have Chandra walking around anyway.

Chatterfang, Squirrel General

My money’s on a reference to Chatterfang, Squirrel General. Mark Rosewater promised lots of charm in this set and is a well-documented lover of squirrels in Magic, so I expect to see a bunch. Check out this gnarly warrior-squirrel.

Wrap Up

Bloomburrow is still a season away. Odds are you can pick up a Redwall book and get a good feel of what to expect from the set, and honestly, the series is a good read anyway.

The setting looks fun, a non-humanoid set feels fresh, and the key art is intriguing. Here’s to hoping it pans out and feels distinct enough from Lorwyn, a set with many of the same underlying features (which we’re also returning to in the near future!). What do you expect/want from Bloomburrow, and are you as excited about it as I am? Let me know in the comments below or over in the Draftsim Discord.

Thank you for making Draftsim your #1 stop for all things Magic!
