Hello planeswalkers! I hope you aren’t just getting through your week, but trampling through it!
Trample is an evergreen keyword ability that I’m sure we’re all familiar with. It’s all about continuing to deal combat damage even through blockers. There are so many great cards with trample such as Ghalta, Primal Hunger, but why should they have all the fun? Let’s take a look at different ways to give your creatures trample.
We can use many words for cards that give other creatures keywords, such as enablers, granters, and givers. For this article’s purpose, let’s just call them all trample-granters. So, let’s find out what these trample-granters are, and what they can do for your builds.
What Are Trample-Granters?

Trample-granting cards give other cards the trample keyword. Whether that’s a keyword counter, a single-turn effect, or a static effect given by a card. We won’t be looking at cards like Shifting Ceratops that can give trample to themselves, strictly cards that can give trample to one or more other creatures. Also, I’ll save wonderful equipment cards like Shadowspear and Embercleave, and auras like Rancor that give trample for another article. All of these cards are solid and can achieve similar outcomes, but these rankings will focus on cards giving other creatures trample through abilities and interactions.
#28. Assaultron Dominator
The gap between Assaultron Dominator and Titanic Ultimatum should be seen as huge, but I wanted to include at least one card that mentioned giving creatures a trample keyword counter. Assaultron Dominator can turn your energy counters into solid combat keyword counters for aggressive attacks. Fully Grown is a decent combat trick that gives a creature a trample counter as well.
#27. Titanic Ultimatum
I think Titanic Ultimatum has to be included on this list for its massive swing potential. This Naya spell () gives a large pump and great keywords to all your creatures for one huge attack. The obvious downside here is the mana value and the flow of games not leading to a solid creature base to be effective.
#26. Angelfire Ignition
Angelfire Ignition is a killer Boros spell () for aggressive players. This card gives a ton of great keywords including trample and indestructible. You can play it again on the following turn, beefing up the same creature as before or making two big bodies. This card is quite susceptible to removal, but if it resolves it can hit wonderfully.
#25. Kamahl, Heart of Krosa
Kamahl, Heart of Krosa is a massive green commander that has quite interesting interactions. To start, you’ll love the mass pump and trample-granting you can give to your creatures each turn. Next, you can turn your lands into very protected and strong creatures. Finally, the partner ability is so good in Commander, especially with a partner like Akroma, Vision of Ixidor. Kamahl, Fist of Krosa is a cheaper version, but with less static ability advantage.
#24. Pathbreaker Ibex
Pathbreaker Ibex is similar to Overwhelming Stampede, but this card is a creature. So why isn’t it ranked higher? Well, I’m not a fan of the MV and stats. This card definitely has its sky-high upside as a repeatable Overwhelming Stampede, but it’s too susceptible to removal for my liking.
#23. Glorious Sunrise
Who doesn’t love some options? Glorious Sunrise is an enchantment that gives green decks a ton of great options. From ramping up mana to drawing cards, this green enchantment has everything! When you’re ready to attack, you can pump your creatures and give them trample to run over your opponents.
#22. Fists of Flame
Fists of Flame works in similar decks that Crash Through below does, but with a slightly different aim. Crash Through is a cantrip that gives all your creatures trample, whereas Fists of Flame is a storm cantrip that focuses on one of your creatures. This card also pumps that creature by the number of cards drawn this turn, aiming for one big killer swing instead of the wide assault of Crash Through.
#21. Crash Through
Crash Through is cantrip that’ll give your Izzet () prowess creatures trample. This cantrip fits quite well into decks with cards like Bria, Riptide Rogue, and Ral, Crackling Wit. This card won’t swing a game, but it can fit well into a storm strategy. Don’t forget about Rile either, as 1 damage probably won’t disrupt your big creatures.
#20. Balmor, Battlemage Captain
Fists of Flame and Crash Through are wonderful spells for a storm deck, but Balmor, Battlemage Captain is the creature you need for these decks. This creature can boost your creatures for every instant or sorcery you cast in a turn and give them trample. This card is a quintessential Izzet storm creature that can wreak games once your strategy is established.
#19. Duskshell Crawler
Duskshell Crawler is a lesser version of Kodama of the West Tree, but it still has a ton of value. +1/+1 counter decks are always looking to ramp up creatures like Bristly Bill, Spine Sower quickly. With Duskshell Crawler, or Pridemalkin, you can give these pumped-up creatures the means to bypass blockers.
#18. Ezuri, Renegade Leader
Ezuri, Renegade Leader is a solid elf–typal piece. This card may not be the strongest choice for an elf commander, but it can fit well into the type-focused build. Once you've established your army of elves you can then use this card’s activated ability to pump them and give them trample. Alongside a card like Marwyn, the Nurturer, Ezuri, Renegade Leader may have the final ability you need to end a game.
#17. Kenrith, the Returned King
Kenrith, the Returned King gives you access to the entire color wheel and a ton of activated abilities. You can spend your mana on whatever interaction you need to survive or gain advantages. At 1 red mana, the cheapest one gives all creatures trample and haste. Seeing as these keywords don’t help your opponents on defense, it’s all attack upside for you.
#16. Nylea, God of the Hunt
Nylea, God of the Hunt is solid combat support for any green creature deck. Even if you haven’t satisfied its devotion requirement, this card provides a ton of value in combat. This card gives all your creature trample (wonderful) and can pump a creature at instant speed. Add the fact that this enchantment is indestructible and can become a massive creature, and you have a strong card or even commander.
#15. Brawn
Brawn is a classic trample-granter with a simple way of granting the keyword. You just need to have this card in your graveyard and control a forest, and your creatures will have trample. This fits well with the upsides of some discard or self-mill Golgari () strategies. Throw Brawn into your graveyard early, and grant all your creatures trample.
#14. Rhonas’s Monument
When many people think about green, they think about big bodies. Rhonas's Monument lends itself to more of a “storm” of small creatures strategy. Casting costs are reduced and you can pump one creature or several for every creature you’ve cast that turn. Green can be aggressive, too!
#13. Surrak Dragonclaw
Do you want trample for all your creatures consistently? Surrak Dragonclaw is the Temur commander () for you then! This legendary human has so much good text for making sure that you can pressure your opponents with your attacks. The one thing you’ll care about is the fact that you can consistently give all your big bodies trample if you play this commander.
#12. Temur Battle Rage
Instant combat tricks can finish games if used properly. Temur Battle Rage is one of these top-tier combat trick cards. Nothing is more frustrating than having a creature with double strike blocked by a chump blocker. If the ferocious requirement is satisfied, the additional trample helps most of the double strike damage get through. One more trample-granting instant to mention is Overprotect for a creature's protection and aggression.
#11. Surrak and Goreclaw
Trample and haste don’t seem like the most compatible pairing. However, Surrak and Goreclaw shows you the effectiveness of this two-keyword-granting creature. Once you’ve established your curve and battlefield, you can swing quickly and effectively with the next creatures you cast. Once Surrak and Goreclaw is on the battlefield, cards like Jumbo Cactuar should help you wreak havoc.
#10. End-Raze Forerunners
End-Raze Forerunners is similar to Overwhelming Stampede, but with a few noteworthy distinctions. I believe Overwhelming Stampede is better for the massive potential pump. However, End-Raze Forerunners provides another big body and vigilance to your creatures. This card costs a lot, but the endgame swing is well worth the investment.
#9. Akroma’s Memorial
You want keywords? Akroma's Memorial has the keywords! Among the massive number of keywords is trample, which ensures your creatures deal damage to players. The high MV is a problem, but with some support from cards like Repurposing Bay and Spire Golem this legendary artifact should be beefing up your creatures in no time.
#8. Nissa, Ascended Animist
Nissa, Ascended Animist is a big and wonderful Phyrexian planeswalker. You can make potentially huge tokens, remove artifacts and destroy enchantments, and for the finale, you can massively pump your creatures and give them trample. Nissa, Ascended Animist is fantastic in any format and deck that can manage the MV.
#7. Kodama of the West Tree
The aim of Kodama of the West Tree differs slightly from other trample-granting cards. Your modified creatures (equipped, aura-attached, and counters) will fetch a basic land whenever they deal damage to a player. To make sure this happens, your modified creatures will also have trample. This card is wonderful ramp for green decks that can modify early.
#6. Triumph of the Hordes
If trample helps you to get through defenses to deal damage to players, why not poison that damage? Triumph of the Hordes isn’t the biggest pump on this list, but it turns your creatures' damage into -1/-1 counters and poison counters. Adding the trample on top of this ensures that your opponent takes a few poison counters. Timed correctly, this card can help get you to the wincon of 10 poison counters.
#5. Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma
Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma is a must-have for big body green decks. This card reduces the casting cost of your big bodies, and when it attacks it gives those creatures the ability to run through defenses. The stats and interactions Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma has is well worth its MV and it fits into most mana curves.
#4. Overwhelming Stampede
If you’ve noticed a trend, the best trample-granters give huge pumps and trample to all your creatures. Overwhelming Stampede is the king of these one-time noncreature spells. This card gives a huge pump if you have big creatures, and to all of them at once.
Overrun should be considered the less powerful, but still good cousin to Overwhelming Stampede.
#3. Kessig Wolf Run
Lands that lend themselves to other strategies and abilities are always valuable. Kessig Wolf Run can be a wonderful combat trick to give a huge power bump and trample. I love that the ability is at instant speed and only requires you to build up a decent mana base. Any Gruul decks () that hope to overrun their opponents should consider this land every time.
#2. Craterhoof Behemoth
Craterhoof Behemoth is a nice endgame card that focuses on a massive swing. Of course, you don’t want a massive swing to be in vain because of a few weeny blockers. This card gives an enormous pump and trample to your creatures so that they can get through a ton of damage. Craterhoof Behemoth can fit well into mana-ramp, reanimator, or even blink-effect decks.
#1. Garruk’s Uprising
One of the quintessential green big bodies cards is Garruk's Uprising. This enchantment helps you to draw cards whenever you play a big body, and grants your creatures trample. Trample and big bodies go together like peanut butter and jelly! So sit back, draw cards, and let your big-bodied creatures run through your opponents’ defenses.
Best Trample-Granting Payoffs
Trample is an evasive keyword that focuses on doing maximum damage. Go give massive creatures like Impervious Greatwurm, Primeval Protector, and Ulvenwald Hydra trample and crush your opponents.
A keyword that works well with trample is deathtouch. You only need to do a single point of damage with deathtouch to kill a creature, so the rest of the damage hits an opponent with trample. Some great deathtouch creatures to give trample are God-Eternal Rhonas and The Gitrog Monster. Also using a deathtouch-granting card like Bow of Nylea can have massive effects with trample.
Along a similar vein to deathtouch would be poison counters. All you need to do is deal damage with an infect creature to give opponents poison counters. Grant trample to cards like Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon and Chained Throatseeker to help achieve the alternative wincon.
And for fun, mix the deathtouch and poison strategies with Fynn, the Fangbearer.
Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths focused a lot on keywords and boosting cards with them. Cards like Quartzwood Crasher and Proud Wildbonder can help make your trample-granted creatures even better.
Wrap Up

If you’ve made it this far, congratulations on trampling through the rankings. I hope you have seen the great power of trample and what it can do for your builds. There’s no need to worry if your creatures don’t have trample, just grant it to them!
