Mystery Booster Commander Edition came at us as a sort of surprise extra set this year, which, mind you, was already a pretty bloated year with a full seven Standard set releases. So surely there won't be another suprise release coming in 2026, right? Well, official spoilers for a new mystery release are pouring in, though “The Zeta Set” is more of a Secret Lair experiment than a full-blown set release.
Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Zeta
On Monday, August 24, the prominent MTG card database Scryfall.com updated their front page with a grey background texture and images for some card art we'd never seen before. Clicking any of those cards sent you to an individual page for a card from something called “The Zeta Set”, set code SLZ.
If you ventured to the full set page, you could see several previously unannounced reprints using what appears to be older 1990s-style playtest card art. You'll also notice the artist for these cards is credited as MSCHF, who has collaborated with Wizards of the Coast in the past for their own exclusive Secret Lair drop.
The Zeta Set is something much bigger than a 7-card Secret Lair drop… well, kind of. Thanks to Polygon, we now have more details beyond what originally dropped on Scryfall.
Zeta Set Contents
The Zeta Set is Magic's first attempt at a booster pack product for Secret Lair. A single purchase of $19.92 (paying homage to the year MTG released), will result in seven random cards from a much larger pool of 121 different cards, each with the stylized MSCHF art meant to mimic early playtest cards. Here's the “pack” structure breakdown:
- 3 Commons
- 2 Uncommons
- 1 Rare or Mythic
- 1 Wildcard of any rarity
There's a 12-pack limit per buyer, with the sale happening through the Secret Lair Chaos Vault on September 2 at 12:00pm EST.
There are three different treatments that each card can show up in: Photocopy (normal), Photocopy Negative (inverted black cards), and Color Banding (horizontal CMY color bands).

The Pauper Rarity Issue
The Baleful Strix from this product caught some attention as the first-ever common printing of the card, which caught some immediate attention from the Pauper community, since this printing would officially make Baleful Strix legal in Pauper.
Magic Designer Gavin Verhey was quick to shut that down though, stating that Secret Lair printings don't affect Pauper legality, which in turn caused a little bit of backlash from players who believe this is skirting the established norms for Pauper. A card is legal in Pauper if it's ever been printed as a common, but this is a common printing of a card that goes against that rule.
There's a bit of a push from some players to retract the Secret Lair rule to not overcomplicate what is/isn't allowed in the format, though no further statement has been made by WotC on the matter. While no one's arguing that Baleful Strix specifically would be too broken for Pauper, people are more concerned with the muddying of the waters these sorts of Secret Lair-specific rarity downshifts introduce into the format.
