MaRo’s Reality Fracture Teaser Promises New Dual Lands, Planeswalker Tokens, And More

Before the release of every new set, Mark Rosewater gives us a batch of teasers. This time around, we got some juicy ones for Reality Fracture, teasing a new card you can have any number of in your deck, a type of token we've never seen before, new dual lands, a cycle of color-shifted cards, and so much more. This is without a doubt one of the most revealing and exciting teaser announcements we've ever gotten.

Planeswalker Tokens?

• “mechanic that creates a token type no other mechanic has ever created“

This is the first and perhaps most important of all of the teasers. There aren't many options for what this could be. It's either a land, planeswalker, or battle (and it almost certainly won't be battle tokens), as everything else has been done already. Land tokens could be interesting, but I think planeswalker tokens are more likely, as there are a few other teasers in this same article that hint at the idea of planeswalkers being important in this set. For example, Mark Rosewater listed these as being lines of text on upcoming cards in the set:

• “'Target planeswalker you control deals damage equal to its loyalty'”

• “'Planeswalkers you control aren’t put into their owner’s graveyards for having 0 loyalty.‘”

These seem like text you'd only find on cards if a set really, really cared about planeswalkers. It reminds me a lot of cards from War of the Spark, which makes a lot of sense. In much the same vein, Reality Fracture is poised to be a hugely impactful set in terms of the Magic story, and will be including several characters we know in different forms than we've seen them before. Plus, in an era where we're only getting one or two planeswalkers a set, we've already seen seven spoiled for Reality Fracture.

Color Shifts And New Takes

We know that Reality Fracture is going to be a set that focuses on reimaginings of cards we've seen before. Oftentimes this involves shifting it into a new color, with either the same text in the case of the old Snapcaster Mage and the new Stingcaster Mage, or with new text to fit better into a new color, such as with the reimagining of Dark Confidant as Enlightened Confidant. We can expect to see a lot of card designs like this, and several of Mark Rosewater's hints certainly reinforce this.

• “Hydra, Kraken, and Phoenix each printed in a single color they’ve never been printed before”

• “some colorwashed spells (akin to Planar Chaos’ bonus sheet)”

To the first point, Hydras are almost exclusively green, Krakens blue, and Phoenixes red. These are quintessential creatures for these colors, and so seeing them in new colors will be very interesting.

As for the second point, colorwashed spells indicate spells that are functionally the same just in a new color. These types of cards are always exciting, as certain effects can be much more powerful in one color than another.

• “prepared spell that’s a red version of a popular blue instant (the color it should have been in)”

This is another color shift, except it's on a prepared spell. We know that prepared is coming back, after recently being introduced in Secrets of Strixhaven, but as for what blue instant will be color shifted into red, I can't say. It probably won't be a counter spell or a card draw spell, as this is something that should have been in red to begin with, and neither of those things are things that red does. I guess we'll just have to wait and see on this one.

Rules References

• “new creature with a mana cost”

• “a card that creates a colorless artifact token named Lotus with ‘, Sacrifice this token: Add three mana of any one color'”

To the first point, the only other card we've seen with this mana cost is Reaper King, so this may be a card that references it in some way. For the second point, this looks awfully familiar to a card we just got in Mystery Booster: Commander, Arzakon. That being said, this is more likely just going to be a card that references Black Lotus.

• “instant with ‘A deck can have any number of cards named CARDNAME.'”

Oh yeah, and there's going to be a new card that you can have any number of in your deck, and this time it's an instant. We've had lots of creatures with this effect, and a couple of sorceries, i.e. Slime Against Humanity and Dragon's Approach, but never an instant. This will no doubt be a card to look out for.

Self Mill Is Back?

There are a handful of cards in this list of teasers that seemingly care about mill in some way, whether it be actual milling, or simply having cards in the graveyard. This is supported by the fact that we've already seen Paradox Shaper, a signpost uncommon for the blue-black archetype that cares about milling yourself.

• “'This creature gets +2/+0 for every seven cards in your graveyard.'”

Given the blue-black will care about self mill, this seems like text that would appear on a payoff card for this archetype.

• “'where X is the number of cards that were put into target player’s graveyard from their library this turn.'”

• “'Exile all but the bottom card of each opponent’s library.'”

To the first point, this seems to be something that benefits you for milling for a lot of cards in a given turn, increasing X the more cards you mill. As for what it does is anyone's guess.

To the second point, this reads like a very powerful mill ability, but it also reminds me of Jace, the Mind Sculptor‘s -12 loyalty ability. Given that Jace is such an important character in this set, this may very well be a direct reference to him and his most powerful appearance.

New Dual Lands

• “new restriction for whether a cycle of dual lands enters tapped”

Oh what's this? A new cycle of dual lands!? I don't think anyone expected to get a brand new cycle of dual lands, especially because we just got one in Marvel Super Heroes, and we got half of a returning one in Secrets of Strixhaven, and yet, we're getting one. How exciting!

New Card Names

The final section of teasers is all card names, and because this set is bursting at the seams with references and such, we can actually glean quite a bit from these names.

• “Curse-Marred Demon”

• “Loyal Tutor”

• “Lyra, Tolarian Archangel”

These first three seem to be in reference to Rune-Scarred Demon, Demonic Tutor, and Lyra Dawnbringer respectively. As for what we can expect, for the first one your guess is as good as mine, but for Loyal Tutor, we can infer by the name that this is probably a white spell that lets you search your deck for a card. Lyra, Tolarian Archangel may be a blue creature this time around, as Tolaria is all about blue (e.g. Tolarian Academy, Tolarian Terror, Tolaria West, etc.)

• “Omnipresence”

• “Rescue Girl, First Responder”

• “Rise of the Deathbringer”

Omnipresence is obviously a take on Omniscience, likely in green rather than blue. Rescue Girl, First Responder seems like an inverted take on Massacre Girl, possibly giving creatures +1/+1 instead of -1/-1. As for Rise of the Deathbringer, I'm at a bit of a loss. It could be another reference to Lyra Dawnbringer, except this time she's bringing death instead of dawn. Also, this card seems like a saga just from the name, although we don't know if sagas will even be in the set, so the jury is still out on this one.

• “Seasoned Cryomancer”

• “Tomik, Izzet Sparkmage”

• “Winter, Team Player”

• “Yoshimaru, Scrappy Stray”

Seasoned Cryomancer is likely just a colorshifted version of Seasoned Pyromancer which is very exciting if true.

Tomik, Izzet Sparkmage is almost certainly a blue-red reimagining of the Tomik character we've seen on cards like Tomik, Wielder of Law. This is notable, as his partner Ral Zarek just popped up on Strixhaven seemingly color swapped with Tomik, and an izzet Tomik would bring this full circle.

Winter, Team Player is another version of Winter, Misanthropic Guide from a universe where he's a people-person. This will likely have white somewhere in its color identity.

Finally there's Yoshimaru, Scrappy Stray, a version of Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful if he perhaps wasn't so eternally faithful. Just going off the name, this will likely be a red and/or green card.

• “Creature – Siren Bard”
• “Creature – Chimera Horror”

• “Creature – Bird Fish Illusion”
• “Artifact Creature – Boar Construct”
• “Legendary Creature – Mouse Warlock”
• “Legendary Creature – Homunculus Scout”
• “Legendary Creature – Ogre Crab Wizard”
• “Legendary Creature – Elder Sphinx”
• “Legendary Creature – Werewolf Noble”

We also got some creature type lines, although it's a bit harder to infer much of anything about the set from just these. That being said, I'm hoping the homunculus scout is a new version of Fblthp, the Lost.

There's more in the full blog post, but these are all of the most interesting bits and pieces that give us a glimpse at the bigger picture. This set has me very excited, and that seems to be a common feeling among the community. Hopefully it delivers, but until the spoilers start on September 8th, I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.
