Now that the Phyrexian storyline has concluded and they’re safely tucked away in the space that Zalfir once resided somewhere in the Blind Eternities (spoilers!), our next stop takes us to Eldraine for a second visit. This plane seems to be the location of story resets, since last time we were here was immediately after War of the Spark where the Bolas storyline finished off.

So, what did we gain from this set, and what are some of the craziest cards printed? Let’s take a look at all it has to offer!

About the Set: The Story

Festive Funeral - Illustration by Zack Stella

Festive Funeral | Illustration by Zack Stella

WIlds of Eldraine built upon the story of the beloved plane through a series of escalations, new heroes, and powerful ancient forces influencing the plane itself. The set focused on the nature and mystical land outside civilization and how the Phyrexian Invasion released a curse known as the “Wicked Slumber” upon the land. Not only did this slumber stifle the invasion, but it also greatly affected those native to the plane.

Overall, Wilds of Eldraine continued the mystical and nature-focused theme that was well-received in Throne of Eldraine. Prominent character such as Will and Rowan, Talion, and even Ashiok will made an appearance. The impact of the Phyrexians, the curse on the inhabitants of the plane, and even the fate of the plane itself was further fleshed out in this set.

Mechanics

Adventure

Cruel Somnophage

The return of adventurer cards is finally here in Wilds of Eldraine. The mechanic debuted in Throne of Eldraine, so it's fitting we saw it again here. The mechanic allows you to cast the adventure card on the left side of the card's oracle text. If you do, you can still cast the rest of the card later on! It's a great way to add flexibility to a deck and opens up a lot of avenues for creative creature design.

Bargain

Bargain is a fresh keyword ability in Wilds of Eldraine that adds new power to cards if you manage to pay the bargain cost as you cast the spell. The bargain cost will always be to sacrifice an artifact, enchantment, or any token. It's a completely optional additional cost, and it's sort of just another kicker clone.

Celebration

Celebration is another new ability from Wilds of Eldraine. It triggers whenever two or more nonland permanents enter the battlefield under your control in a single turn. It seems relatively difficult to consistently trigger, but if the payoffs are worth it, it might just be good enough.

Notable Cards

Enchanting Tales

In every booster pack of Wilds of Eldraine, there is one “Enchanting Tales” card. These are non-Standard legal, special versions of existing cards — much like the Retro Artifacts in The Brothers' War.

Virtues

The cycle of virtue enchantments made quite a dent in Standard, and many of them are great cards in EDH. They don't go farther beyond that, but each one is a great example of how to take a color's primary themes and combine them into a single Magic card!

Up the Beanstalk

Up the Beanstalk

Up the Beanstalk is likely the most notable card in all of WOE. It replaces itself, draws you fture cards, and makes pitch-spells like Solitude or Force of Negation card-neutral! It's seeing play in just about every single format, and I can see why.

Agatha's Soul Cauldron

Agatha's Soul Cauldron is the most expensive card in the set, and I can see why. It's an excellent combo piece that has playability across Modern, Pioneer, Standard, and Commander! It's cheap, effective, and comes with a whole swath of benefits.
