After the finale of the Phyrexian storyline in March of the Machine and then its Aftermath, we’re going to be returning to Eldraine for a second visit. This plane seems to be the location of story resets, since last time we were here was immediately after War of the Spark where the Bolas storyline finished off.

So what can we expect from this set, and will it give us any clues as to what’s in store for the Magic multiverse going forwards? Let’s take a look at all we know so far, as well as a healthy dose of speculation!

Important Dates

We don’t know much about the release date for the set yet, but we do know it’s going to be in the 3rd quarter of 2023. One date we do know is that the World Championships are going to be held at Las Vegas on the 22nd to 24th of September 2023, which is likely to also be a Magic Fest. I’d expect this to be a couple of weeks after Wilds of Eldraines releases.

About the Set: The Story

Festive Funeral - Illustration by Zack Stella

We don’t really have any info on the story in Wilds of Eldraine yet. All we’ve had is a single spoiler for March of the Machine: The Aftermath in The Kenriths' Royal Funeral, hinting that the king and queen of Eldraine’s humans, the parents of Will and Rowan Kenrith, don’t make it through the Phyrexian invasion.

Being the first full set to come after the invasion, I expect Wilds of Eldraine to deal with the fallout from the Phyrexians’ devastation along with a few isolated stories. I’d be surprised if they started setting up the next big bad as early as this set.

Speculation

It’s super difficult to speculate on the set at this point, but there’s a bit of a clue in the name, specifically the word “Wilds.” Mark Rosewater has said on his Drive to Work podcast that the original Eldraine set was initially planned to be a two-set block, with the first set focusing on the human kingdom, then the second set heading into the wilds. A lot of the second set would have been scrapped when they were compressed into a single set.

I expect Wilds of Eldraine to use some of the material from the planned second set and take a darker look at some of the fairytale concepts that the plane is known for.

Official Spoilers

No spoilers just yet. I expect to get a First Look at Pro Tour/MagicCon Barcelona at the end of July.

Unofficial Spoilers/Leaks

No leaks yet, but you never know when we’re going to get a grainy photograph of something someone’s found in a bin!

Available Products

We don’t have any details on this yet, but I’d expect it to be the typical fare of:

That’s all we know for now! What do you think? Are there any fairytale references that you’d like to see come back in Wilds of Eldraine? Any mechanics that you want to see return? Or are you a Vorthos and have some theories of what the plane will look like now that the Phyrexians have had their way with the Multiverse?
