Hello planeswalkers! I’m sure you’re aware of all the wonderful keywords in MTG. Trample, flash, flying… the list goes on. Well, we aren’t talking about any keywords today, but rather a common ability that has no keyword. We’re going to discuss making creatures unblockable.

Cards like Changeling Outcast have the ability to be unblockable printed right on them. This is very convenient, but not exactly what were looking at. Today, let’s check out the cards that can enable your other creatures to be unblockable and help your bomb creatures skip your opponents’ defenses!

What Are Unblockable Enablers in MTG?

Aqueous Form - Illustration by Slawomir Maniak

Unblockable enablers are cards that make your creatures unblockable, or prevent your opponents from blocking them. This comes in a few different forms, such as “can’t be blocked”, “creatures can’t block”, or protection from creatures. This can be a targeted action or an effect for all of your creatures. The throughline for all of these cards is that they grant at least one different creature a free shot at an opponent.

A wide range of cards could fit into this category, but we’re going to tighten up this list. I won’t include cards that already have unblockable, only cards that grant others unblockable abilities. I also won’t include unblockable effects with restrictions like “can be blocked by only one creature”, “up to three target creatures can’t block”, or “can’t be blocked by creatures with more power”. All of these effects can be circumvented and blocked in certain scenarios. We just want our creatures to be undeniably unblockable, and so let’s dive into the unblockable-enabling cards!

#32. Crypsis

Crypsis

The protection from creatures ability works the same as unblockable for our purposes. Crypsis is a cheap instant that gives one of your creatures protection from creatures for a single turn. This can be used to protect against creature activated abilities, or to become unblockable. A nice and simple instant to make a bomb creature unblockable for a turn.

#31. Aether Tunnel

Aether Tunnel

No frills, just give unblockable to my favorite creature. Aether Tunnel is a cheap and simple aura that grants unblockable. Attach it to your bomb creature and hope you can get some solid, unblockable swings in. This card has the most value in Limited formats.

#30. Cosmotronic Wave + Hazardous Blast

Cosmotronic Wave and Hazardous Blast are both 4-drops that kill small creatures and make other creatures unable to block. These cards had a ton of value in Limited, freeing you up for a final fatal attack. In Constructed, they’re just a little too expensive, and removal is too prevalent. Barrage of Boulders works similarly for a cheaper cost, if you enable the ferocious clause.

#29. Taunt from the Rampart

Taunt from the Rampart

Taunt from the Rampart is similar to Bothersome Quasit, but for only a single turn. The goad ability protects you from attacks for a turn, and those goaded creatures can’t block your creatures. This card is a good play if you feel like you can take out a threatening player, and gives you brief protection from retribution.

#28. Seasoned Dungeoneer

Seasoned Dungeoneer

Seasoned Dungeoneer gives the party creature types protection from creatures. This Baldur’s Gate card helps to enter the Undercity and frees up one of your clerics, rogues, warriors, or wizards for a nice free attack.

#27. Glaring Spotlight

Glaring Spotlight

Glaring Spotlight has an interesting static ability; who doesn’t want to get rid of an opponent’s hexproof protection? This may not come up often, but when it does, it frees up your removal. The sac ability here prevents your creatures from being blocked and protects them with a bit of hexproof.

#26. Bedlam

Bedlam

Forget making your creatures unblockable, just go with creatures can’t block, period. Bedlam is an enchantment with only three words of rules text, and it does exactly what we’re looking for. All gas and no brakes. This enchantment frees up your aggressive deck to attack with no blockers in sight.

#25. Bothersome Quasit

Bothersome Quasit

Bothersome Quasit is quite an interesting card for multiplayer games. The goad ability forces your opponents to attack other players, but this card also makes it so any untapped goaded creature still can’t block your attackers. This cuts down on the wait time for goaded creatures to tap themselves out attacking other players. Throw a little chaos into the match and make it so your opponents can’t block your creatures.

#24. Vexilus Praetor

Vexilus Praetor

Forget protection from creatures, why not have protection from everything? Vexilus Praetor grants this to all of your commanders. Making your commander(s) unblockable helps you to win by commander damage. Of course, this card is pretty much useless outside of EDH. Sword Coast Sailor is another Commander-specific unblockable-granting card with a requirement.

#23. Protection from Creatures Auras

Spirit Mantle, Holy Mantle, and Unquestioned Authority are simple and cheap auras that give one of your creatures protection from creatures. These auras enable a creature to attack without worrying about blockers and protects against creature activated abilities. The ultimate downside is that they don’t protect against any other type of removal and are vulnerable to becoming easily removed.

#22. Order // Chaos

Order // Chaos

Order is a solid defense against attacking creatures. However, we care about Chaos. The red side of this card prevents your attacking creatures from being blocked. With a mana value of 3, this is a solid way of getting a free swing in on an opponent.

#21. Steel of the Godhead

Steel of the Godhead

I like the hybrid color auras that give a different benefit to each of the two colors they represent. My favorite has to be Fists of the Demigod, but Steel of the Godhead isn’t bad for an Azorius () deck. This aura pumps both white and blue creatures, gives white creatures lifelink, and blue creatures unblockable. This aura can be deadly attached to a creature like Dragonlord Ojutai.

#20. Silver Shroud Costume

Silver Shroud Costume

Silver Shroud Costume is great and sneaky equipment for a change-of-game kind of manueveur. The flash and auto-attachment shroud effect make this like a protection spell. However, after you protect your creature, it becomes unblockable. This progression of anti-removal into scary attacker is a solid move many want to make. Outside of this specific scenario, the equip cost is a little high.

#19. Bilbo’s Ring

Bilbo's Ring

Bilbo's Ring has great abilities at an expensive price unless it’s in a halfling deck. In any kind of deck, the upside of an unblockable creature that draws you a card and is protected by hexproof may be worth the investment. For the utmost benefit, you can attach this ring to halflings like Frodo, Sauron's Bane.

#18. Merfolk Sovereign

Merfolk Sovereign

Merfolk Sovereign is a nice lord for your merfolk typal decks. It gives an anthem like a traditional lord, but also taps to make one of your merfolk unblockable. When you make a merfolk like Hakbal of the Surging Soul unblockable, good things happen. The MV is right, and the abilities are solid for combat. I like this card for any merfolk typal deck!

#17. Suspicious Bookcase

Suspicious Bookcase

There's something unsettling about that bookcase. Suspicious Bookcase is an early defender that provides high upside in the late game. Similar to Manifold Key, this wall provides a free path for one of your attacking creatures for only 3 mana. This wall slows down aggressive decks, then grants unblockable to one of your bomb creatures. Nothing suspicious about that!

#16. 1-Mana Unblockable Enabling Spells

As with many cards that enable some keyword or effect, some of the very best ones only cost 1 mana. All of these cards make creatures unblockable at an extremely low rate. I’m a fan of the cantrips like Enter the Enigma and Slip Through Space. Other useful examples are Artful Dodge, Distortion Strike, and You Come to a River. These cards work well in storm decks and with prowess creatures like Monastery Swiftspear.

#15. Whirler Rogue

Whirler Rogue

Whirler Rogue is a 4-drop creature that provides support through unblockable-enabling effects. Getting three creatures from one card is always great, but the real reason you want the two Thopter artifact tokens is to make another one of your creatures unblockable. This card provides the means to tap for unblockable, but any two artifacts will work. Let the artifact token creation begin!

#14. Reverse the Polarity

Reverse the Polarity

Reverse the Polarity has wonderful modal options. You can kill a stack of spells, completely change combat dynamics, or make all of your creatures unblockable for a turn. This card is great in many situations, and making all of your creatures unblockable is right at the top of the value of this card. Unfortunately, this is a Universes Beyond card and only legal in Eternal formats.

#13. K-9, Mark I

K-9, Mark I

K-9, Mark I is the ultimate good boy for your Commander decks. It has two different abilities, one that protects your legendary creatures and another that makes them unblockable. More importantly, this robot‘s companion ability allows it to share the command zone with a Time Lord Doctor. Having two commanders is a huge advantage for your deck.

The possibilities are almost as endless as the Doctor Who adventures. There are 17 Doctors to choose from in many color combinations, except for black. They’re mostly blue and have a wide range of abilities and play styles. Choose wisely or make a ton of different combinations.

#12. Sonic Screwdriver

Sonic Screwdriver

You may notice a motif of keys and other means of opening paths equated to creatures becoming unblockable. This Sonic Screwdriver is one handy tool. It produces mana, untaps artifacts, scries, and most importantly for our purposes, makes a creature unblockable.

#11. Key to the City

Key to the City

Key to the City uses up some of your spare resources for extreme advantages. If you have some disposable cards in your hand, toss them and make any of your creatures unblockable this turn. If you have extra mana, draw a card as the key untaps. This is a great card to make sure you are applying pressure or gaining advantages each turn you have available resources.

#10. Venser, the Sojourner

Venser, the Sojourner

As the only planeswalker on this list, Venser, the Sojourner contains a different kind of value than the rest of the cards. Two of this planeswalker’s abilities work quite well for blink decks. We care about the -1 loyalty ability that gives all of your creatures unblockable this turn. This is an easy cost for a huge reward. The widespread unblockable-granting might be much more worth it than trying to grind to the -8 final loyalty ability.

#9. Bria, Riptide Rogue

Bria, Riptide Rogue

What a fun-looking otter, right? Bria, Riptide Rogue is a solid Izzet () piece that provides so much upside for a spellslinger deck. This card provides prowess to all of your creatures and unblockable when you cast noncreature spells. At 4 mana, this card provides an absurd amount of value to midrange Izzet decks.

#8. Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive

Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive

Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive is an interesting unblockable enabler on this list. This card makes creatures with either toughness or power 1 unblockable. This works best with creatures that have strong saboteur abilities, like Scroll Thief and Mist-Syndicate Naga.

#7. Manifold Key

Manifold Key

Manifold Key works like some of the equipment cards on this list, but as an stationary artifact instead of an equipment. This card gets onto the battlefield early and simply costs 3 mana to make any creature unblockable. The utility of this artifact is astronomical. The only thing you have to worry about is artifact hate ruining your good time.

#6. Thassa, God of the Sea

Thassa, God of the Sea

Thassa, God of the Sea is a wonderful card for a blue deck. This god helps establish your deck with a convenient every-turn scry, and then becomes stellar in the late game. If you have the mana, you can make a ton of creatures unblockable for only 2 mana each. Thassa fits well into control decks that want one final strike.

#5. Herald of Secret Streams

Herald of Secret Streams

Herald of Secret Streams takes +1/+1 counter decks to new heights. This card enables creatures with +1/+1 counters to be unblockable. With the vast array of methods of getting counters on creatures, this is a massive effect that can change a game. Herald of Secret Streams should be included in every counter deck that splashes blue.

#4. Brotherhood Regalia

Brotherhood Regalia

Many of the equipment cards on this ranking fit into the assassin theme, but none more than Brotherhood Regalia. This equipment gives ward to defend your creature and makes the equipped creature unblockable. The equip cost isn’t absurd, but this card becomes much more valuable when you're dealing with a legendary creature. The additional assassin creature type fits well with cards like Ezio, Blade of Vengeance and Interceptor, Shadow's Hound.

#3. Aqueous Form

Aqueous Form

Aqueous Form is a super cheap way to make one of your creatures unblockable. This aura is great when pumping up creatures or aiming to deal commander damage. The low MV and excellent evasion make it a great aura to roster.

#2. Whispersilk Cloak

Whispersilk Cloak

The ultimate assassin cloak is Whispersilk Cloak. This equipment makes a creature unblockable and protects it from spells with shroud. This is a stellar equipment for Voltron decks or commanders like Silas Renn, Seeker Adept. It fits perfectly well on a big body like Yargle and Multani, too.

#1. Unblockable Enabling Lands

When you can use a land for more utility than just mana, you are gaining a massive advantage. There are several of these cards, all with a slightly different flavor. Small creature or pump decks can use Access Tunnel effectively. Escape Tunnel provides great options in a landfall deck. But the best has to be Rogue's Passage because of its lack of restrictions and power in the later game. For multiplayer games, I also like The Black Gate.

Thanks for taking the time to read this article, and I won’t block you from your other important duties. Unblockable may be the best non-keyword keyword in MTG. If you can swing with a deadly or big creature, your opponents might be lights out. So, please try to integrate some of the cards above into your decks, and let us know what happens!
