Aang, Master of Elements | Illustration by Fahmi Fauzi
White . Blue . Black . Red . Green . These are the five colors of mana in MTG, and long ago, they lived together in harmony. That is, until the Fire Nation Attacks.
Let's welcome Avatar: The Last Airbender, that marks the first back-to-back full Magic set releases of Universes Beyond after Marvelโs Spider-Man. Wizards of the Coast propels outside properties into the Standard environment deeper than the The Fire Nation Drill through The Walls of Ba Sing Se.
Thankfully you don't need to wait 100 years to discover the Avatar, it is here, and I believe Aang, A Lot to Learn can bring harmony and balance to the world of Magic.

About the Set: The Story

Aang's Iceberg | Illustration by Brigitte Roka and Clifton Stommel
Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the Nickelodeon cartoonโs story very closely. There are three Avatar seasons. MTGโs Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Aangโs story and culminates as Aang masters the four elements in Avatar Aang / Aang, Master of Elements.
Avatarโs world has elemental mages known as benders that specialize in manipulating the environment to their martial skills. The people of the world are divided into four nations: the Northern and Southern Water Tribes, the Air Nomads, the Earth Kingdom, and the Fire Nation. While not essentially evil, the Fire Nation is led by Fire Lord Ozai, an abusive, destructive, powerful, and ruthless conqueror. The Fire Nation claims its destiny is to rule over the other nations, and eliminated nearly all the Air Nomads and continues to lay siege to the other two for the last 100 years.
In this context, Aang is the last Airbender, and the current incarnation of the Avatar, a spiritual being of immense power that must learn how to bend all kinds of elemental magic as well as mediate balance between spirits and humans. Aang must master the elements across his journey so that he can stop the Fire Lord and reestablish peace.
If you're unfamiliar, this highly-regarded, roughly 60-episode animated series holds up from its 2005 release and is one of the greatest stories to ever appear on Nickelodeon.
Secret Lairs

The Secret Lairs of Avatar: The Last Airbender dropped on Nov. 17, 2025 at 9 a.m. Pacific and brought out some beloved elements. The promo for spending at least $199 is a Path of Ancestry with Aang and his flying animal companions. The drops have an MSRP of $29.99 for the nonfoil and $39.99 for the foil.

Set Mechanics

Katara, Heroic Healer | Illustration by Pauline Voss
Skip over the part in Book One: Water Chapter: One when Katara says bending is not magic. Each style of bending is a different mechanic and there are a number of well-known mechanics that return to smooth things out.
Airbending
Appa, Steadfast Guardian offers you plenty of opportunity for enters and leaves the battlefield triggers. I think of airbending as a flicker with an added cost and delay. Of course this also falls in line with cards that want you to cast from exile.
Earthbending
You need land to get going with an Earthbending Lesson. It is like awaken (as seen on Part the Waterveil) in that it animates your land, but if it dies or would be exiled, your land returns to the battlefield tapped. Earthbending is fantastic compared to many ways to animate permanents because you don't lose a full card.
Firebending
Fire Lord Zuko shows us how fire can be used as energy, as it comes from the breath, not the muscle of direct damage or firebreathing. The firebending keyword adds mana in different amounts for use during combat and is designed to play well with instants, activated abilities, or cards with flash.
Waterbending
Waterbend is a cost, and a combination of convoke and improvise in that artifacts or creatures can help you pay for the cost. This ability allows creatures to get a base power and toughness equal to what you pay during your turn. Katara, Water Tribe's Hope is a testament to how flexible water is based on the abilities and needs of the moment.
Clue
Clue tokens show up because lots of characters in Avatar find clues to help move the story along. WotC went without the keyword investigate partially to keep it simpler and fit the flavor better.
Exhaust
The exhaust ability shows your card spent it's energy and can't regain it by untapping. This mechanic transplanted from Aetherdrift is pretty easy to follow since you can use it once, unless you first move the card to another zone like exile or your hand.
Flashback
The flashbacks in many episodes show important moments of history and reflect a bit of the Avatar's hidden power in drawing on past knowledge, perfect for Magic's flashback.
Kicker
The kicker on Aang's Journey, supports the shrine archetype, but is easily tacked onto other spells as a way to intensify them.
Landcycling
The common Canyon Crawler, Giant Koi, Mongoose Lizard, Rabaroo Troop, and Saber-Tooth Moose-Lion are very playable high-end of the curve cards that have early utility thanks to their affordable and colorless landcycling.
Prowess
Prowess is a popular mechanic that artifact, enchantment, and spellslinger players alike know and love.
Raid
Raid tracks whether or not you attacked with a creature on a given turn and and offers a bonus.
Transform
The transform mechanic signifies a major point in the stories, like Aang, at the Crossroads. Note that sagas will need to exile and return to play, while Aang does not leave the battlefield to become Aang, Destined Savior.
Cameo Mechanics
The mechanics here are often added because they match the flavor and are utilized outside the Standard set. So just because you have one or two cards with a mechanic you love, doesn't mean it's a fully supported strategy in Standard.
Find storm on Storm of Memories and landfall on Earthbender Ascension. Affinity shows up for allies and fits the theme nicely on Allies at Last while converge appears on a scene card in Uncle's Musings. One more uncle to mention is Iroh, Dragon of the West and mentor to many. A major plot point is the foretelling of Sozin's Comet. This time-bending mechanic is a great fit and on this card, an event the Fire Nation rightfully looks forward to.
Jumpstart: Experience Counters
Aang, Airbending Master is from the jumpstart boosters of the set, and has a great way to increase experience counters. These do not get added to the Standard rotation, and are legal in the eternal formats or non-rotating formats like Commander.

The front cards for the jumpstart packs give just a bit of indication on what the pack is about and represents half of the 40-card deck you make when you play Jumpstart. There are 46 different themes and some may work better than others, but the interactions are fun to discover.
Set Card Types

Bitter Work | Illustration by Bun Toujo
The subtypes fill in flavor and tie in with the mechanics. These are the notable types to learn about for Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Allies
Avatar Enthusiasts might describe a reader or two. The creature type is not a mechanic on it's own, but many effects directly tie them together. The payoffs for playing allies is as simple as this one, and the sky's the limit on other powerful things you can do when you bring allies together.
Lesson
Sokka's Haiku is smartly designed as a haiku: five syllables on the first line, seven on the middle line and five on the last line. This one doesn't have any flavor text, but on many lesson cards, the flavor text is from when the lesson is taught during the show.
What's notable is that Avatar: The Last Airbender has no learn cards like Strixhaven, but the spell subtype is pervasive in the set. This gives us meaty goodness that can marinate until Secrets of Strixhaven in 2026.
Shrines
The Southern Air Temple signals that 5-colors of shrines are back. The legendary enchantments do great things when you visit more shrines, so this enchantment typal theme is one to watch out for.
Sagas
This saga that transforms from The Rise of Sozin into Fire Lord Sozin is a strong way to depict the story in Avatar: The Last Airbender. These story-telling cards bring in the four most recent Avatars and show you some of the most memorable scenes from the series.

Notable Cards
Headliner: Avatar Aang

Missed opportunity to have Avatar Aang / Aang, Master of Elements serialized at 100 copies. Aang helps you draw cards for bending, great. The payoff for bending all four elements in one turn is cost reduction like you've see on Morophon, the Boundless. The big time reward is when you come out of that risky/powerful avatar state, and transform back to Avatar Aang as four new cards, a sizable buff, and Warleader's Helix to opponent's domes is almost certainly worth it on the first upkeep possible.
Scene Cards
From within the play boosters and collector boosters there are scene cards that depict the epic moments at the end of each season. The Aangs transform, so this will work much better when you have clear inner sleeves. Hyper collectors might get two of each just to display them in a single cool binder page.

Thatโs all, folks, as a fan of the animated TV series, art, and lore, this set excites me about Magic, and I think itโs a really good one and a near-perfect fit to MTGโs universe.

I’d imagine that Azula is also a notable Fire Nation character that could make an appearance. Either way, very excited for this set!
Don’t know too much about ATLA myself but I’m guessing any character that had even a small impact on the show is showing up in the set.
Holy heck. I do get comments about “set fatigue” where we’ve been bombarded with sets (I’d just bought Final Fantasy and without pausing bought Edge of Eternities). They definitely need to slow down their releases.
I played in the 90s and stopped. I bought the Doctor Who set because I was a fan of that and didn’t get back into the game into much later. The Doctor Who set is a product of its lore, the Doctors are generally pacifist, which makes the playstyles way different (and it doesn’t help the Companion/Commander combo also severely limits the play styles, but I did manage a First Doctor cascade deck).
The Airbender set is on point in terms of its lore (so far) along with its art and mechanics. People who aren’t fans of Airbender won’t get into it as such, but the art is immersive, the in jokes (My Cabbages!) and the lore… And the mechanics are on point. This is what Magic should be about… If they slow down the releases. We need strong core sets (this should count as a core set) and not throw them out every two months. Quality, not quantity. For the convergence between Airbender and Magic and just general Magic gameplay, this is probably a near high peak.
I’m so glad you’re getting the jokes. You are not alone in your sense on set releases, a slower pace would let us appreciate the great sets for longer.
