Universes Beyond took a sharp turn in 2025. What used to be supplementary Magic sets usually aimed at Commander with a few cards that make it into other Magic formats became Standard-legal. The second Universes Beyond set to go straight into Standard is Marvel’s Spider-Man.
We also have other Marvel sets confirmed to be released, and thanks to Final Fantasy, get a very diverse Standard. Outside of the regular rotation there are six Secret Lairs on Spider-Man. This is all over the front page of the Daily Bugle, so let’s meet our friendly neighborhood hero.

About the Set: The Story
The Universes Beyond coverage of Marvel’s Spider-Man literally goes into multiple universes and draws upon Spider-Man’s rich lore in its cards to cover many adventures and challenges that Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Gwen Stacy face, especially the varied cast of villains from across Marvel's history.
Set Mechanics

Mayhem
The mayhem ability is an alteration of madness that lets you play cards that you discarded within the turn. The cost reduction on these cards is serious business as seen on the auto-equip surprise Rocket-Powered Goblin Glider. The timing just cares that you discarded the card sometime during the turn.
Web-slinging
Web-slinging is an odd mechanic that bounces a tapped creature to help pay for a card's cost, almost like a minus-tempo convoke. An alternate cost like this on Scarlet Spider, Ben Reilly does open up lots of leaves the battlefield and enters the battlefield triggers.
Connives
Connive is used to show the villains plan for the demise of our hero. Norman Osborn is a sneaky saboteur that can consistently connive. Once transformed into Green Goblin it trades conniving away for mayhem which feeds on any other looting abilities you have.
Modified
The modified matters cards look to auras, enchantments, equipment, and any counters, though +1/+1 counters are the most common ones, as featured on Araña, Heart of the Spider. These modifications hang around every set, so it becomes more of a Choose Your Weapon, or “select your suit” sort of situation.
Saga
Sagas like Maximum Carnage read like a page out of a comic book and move from frame to frame. These story-telling tools are full of flavor and value.
Transform
The way modal dual face cards work shifts a bit in that you can play either side from your hand. Now cards like Gwen Stacy have the ability to transform into Ghost-Spider, and you could skip the performer creature type and go straight to the spider side.
Cameo Mechanics

Cameo mechanics only show up on one or two cards and typically return mechanics that are not too complicated. You can find suspect on J. Jonah Jameson, riot on Spider-Punk, convoke on Web of Life and Destiny, and kicker on Whoosh!.
Notable Cards

The Soul Stone is the Spider-Man headliner, and the first of six infinity stones to be made into a Magic card.

There are eight Spectacular Spider-Man suits and I include the promo/default treatment because it's easier to read. Pick your favorite comic storyline and go after that one. I sense that a few collectors have a page in their coolest binder dedicated for this subset of cards.
The Sandman, Shifting Scoundrel is the first creature card to use the sand type. Magic historians can chime in that there have been a few cards that create sand creature tokens, but this is a first, and certainly the first legendary sand creature in Magic.
Cosmic Spider-Man is a rare 5-color commander and is the holder of the five colors' iconic keywords. The best part is that it gives the keyword soup to all your spiders during your turn. Any two abilities would have been great, but all five is cosmic.
Oscorp Industries, Urban Retreat, and Multiversal Passage mark the rare lands of SPM, and are especially interesting. Passage is a neat twist to get you access to any basic land type. Grixis gets that chance at mayhem to not lose a full card to any discard requirement. Bant on the other hand gets a way to sling itself onto the battlefield and reset one of your creatures.

It’s crazy to think that as a child, I used to collect Spider-Man cards, and now we get to actually collect Spider-Man MTG cards!
A few months ago I’d say something like: “Like it or not, Universes Beyond is here to stay.” Now I can tell you that this IP mix is hitting all competitive formats, including Standard and Limited. At least Spider-Man is a rich and popular IP spanning 50+ years of comic books, cartoons, movies, and the like. Also, I'm excited to see how the popular Marvel IPs hit the MTG scene in the coming sets, and will keep an eye on the release schedule.
What do you guys think of all of this madness? What is the most amazing Universes Beyond set? Let me know in the comments, or in our Discord Server.
Thank you for reading, and give your aunty a hug or call when you have a minute.
