Mount Doom scene | Illustration by Marta Nael
What's your favorite scene from the Lord of the Rings books or movies? I love the encounter with the Balrog in the movie and the books. I’m not “a servant of the Secret Fire,” but I can help guide you through the wonderful scene cards from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set.
The scene cards are multiple individual borderless cards that can be put together in a specific order to make a bigger picture of one of the famous scenes from LotR, much like wallpaper. These are regular cards that add more collectible value for fans.
So let's take a look!

How Do You Get Scene Cards?
You can get scene cards in many different types of packs and boxes. Prerelease packs include one scene card from Bilbo’s Birthday party. The Lord of the Rings regular bundle and The Lord of the Rings Gift Bundle include four scene cards from Mount Doom. All the scene cards that aren’t a part of the scene boxes are found randomly in set, draft, and collector boosters. The scene boxes include all six scene cards of the specific scene advertised on the box.
Are Scene Cards Valuable?
It mostly depends on the rarity of the scene card. A lot of the commons and uncommons are going to be less than $1, even with the borderless scene background. Some of the mythic scene cards like Gandalf the White will fetch around double the price of the non-scene version of the card. The Legolas's Quick Reflexes from Aragon at Helm’s Deep is one of the most valuable at about $20.
With the prices I’ve seen, you can expect less than or around $1 for commons and uncommons, somewhere between $1 and $3 for rares, and somewhere between $2 and $10 for mythics.
Can You Use Your Promo Scene Card at Prerelease?
The promo scene cards weren’t intended for use at prereleases. They were meant to build excitement for the set and were not allowed in Sealed prerelease events.
Are Scene Cards on MTGA?
Yes, many of the scene cards can be found on MTGA. The exceptions are the 24 scene box cards that did not go to Arena but are sold in their given sets of six.
What Are Scene Boxes?
Scene boxes are a special holiday collectible. There are four different collectible boxes that each include a specific 2×3 card scene. These scenes and cards aren’t a part of the main set, so you need to buy the collectible scene boxes if you want all the scenes.
- COLLECT ALL 4 SCENES—This bundle includes all 4 The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Scene Boxes, with 1 Aragorn at Helm’s Deep, 1 Flight of the Witch-king, 1 The Might of Galadriel, and 1 Gandalf in Pelennor Fields
- IMMORTALIZE EPIC MOMENTS—Each Scene Box contains 6 foil Borderless cards with art that combines to showcase one of the most epic scenes from The Lord of the Rings
- PUT YOUR ART ON FULL DISPLAY—While each Scene Card is a playable Magic card, this box also contains 6 Art Cards featuring the same art without any game text obscuring the view, allowing you to appreciate the full scene in all its glory on the included display easel
- EXPLORE WITH SET BOOSTERS—Designed for a fun pack-opening experience, get 3 Set Boosters full of more The Lord of the Rings-themed cards; every pack contains 12 cards from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set, including 1–4 cards of rarity Rare or higher

It gives fans another adaptation of some of their favorite memories from the books or movies, and it adds even more to collect. These collectible scenes do a great job of celebrating the artists and showing off some excellent magic art, and I can tell you that I’m excited to get the entire Bridge of Khazad-dûm scene in my collection.
