Mount Doom scene card (Frodo, Sauron's Bane; Samwise, the Stouthearted; Gollum, Patient Plotter; The One Ring) - Illustration by Marta Nael

What's your favorite scene from the Lord of the Rings books or movies? I love the encounter with the Balrog in the movie and the books. I’m not “a servant of the Secret Fire,” but I can help guide you through the wonderful scene cards that started with The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set and reach into many Universes Beyond collaborations.

The art on a Magic card with default treatment takes up more than half of the card, and that's not enough art for scene cards. What if I told you those images could all be put together like a cardboard mural after we strip away the border and background of the rules box?

What is a Scene Card?

Flash Photography

Scene cards are multiple individual borderless cards that can be put together in a specific order to make a bigger picture of one of the famous scenes from the universe, much like wallpaper. Many of these are regular cards that add more collectible value for fans. Some scene cards are unique and only found in scene box products like Spidey's Spectacular Showdown which released alongside Spider-Man, or the four different collectible Lord of the Rings scene boxes.

How Many Scene Cards Are There?

There are 113 scene cards largely in Lord of the Rings, with four collections for 24 cards from Final Fantasy (to be released Dec. 5, 2025), 12 total cards from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and a single 6-card set in both Assassin's Creed and Spider-Man. 77 of the cards create 11 iconic scenes from LotR lore. Many of these scene cards are found in different packs and bundles. The scene cards in Assassin's Creed are an unexpected pleasure when you were expecting a typical land. The friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has to put up with three villains out of its scene cards.

At the end of the day, each scene card is designed to spark joy in your memory. Now let's take a look at each scene!

The Black Sun Invasion

Story time: The Day of Black Sun was my introduction to Avatar: The Last Airbender. This action-packed two-part episode is a landmark case of why this show defied the Nickelodeon channel it debuted on. An all-out invasion that took weeks (about 20 episodes of the show) to plan and precise timing with an eclipse… is only fitting in that fans learned about it 100 days before its release on Nov. 21, 2025.

The Black Sun Invasion Scene Box celebrates six cards that have too much material for a typical Magic battle card. It shows all four elements with benders in their prime, and highlights powerful cards for their colors.

Spidey's Spectacular Showdown

Three villains and a couple of their weapons surround the Sensational Spider-Man. This showdown is full of superpowered up effects. The hero and villains throw around “draw three cards,” reanimation, “scavenging” your opponent's graveyard, stun counters and discard payoffs. The Spidey scene box is it's own product with MSRP of $41.99, or about the price of six play boosters. Here are the cards:

Assassin's Creed Roma Vista

Six cards illustrate a view of Rome from the perspective of Assassin's Creed‘s Ezio Auditore da Firenze. They happen to be quite playable dual lands, and Ezio is a natural choice for an EDH deck. It's quite a feat to collect these since they do not have their own box, and come in beyond boosters, collector boosters, and bundles. Look for:

Mount Doom

The Mount Doom scene is included in The Lord of the Rings bundle and The Lord of the Rings Gift Bundle, as well as non-foil versions in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth collector boosters.

Battle of the Pelennor Fields

Battle of the Pelennor Fields scene is included in Tales of Middle-earth set, LTR draft boosters, and LTR collector boosters.

How Do You Get Scene Cards?

4 Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth Scene Boxes

Select scene cards are found only in their scene box products. Other scene cards are found in a variety of packs and boxes. Lord of the Rings prerelease packs include one scene card from Bilbo’s Birthday party. The Lord of the Rings regular bundle and The Lord of the Rings Gift Bundle include four scene cards from Mount Doom. Scene cards that aren’t a part of the scene boxes are distributed in set, draft, beyond, and collector boosters. The LTR scene boxes and Spidey's Spectacular Showdown include all six scene cards of the specific scene advertised on the box.

Are Scene Cards on MTGA?

Some of the scene cards made it to MTG Arena, as in the scene cards that are also found in regular boosters can be found on Arena. However most of the cards after the Lord of the Ring‘s main set release are not on MTGA. They are part of the eternal or Commander set, and mainly distributed in paper by the scene boxes themselves, or filtered into the probabilities of the collector boosters.

Are Scene Cards Valuable?

The value of the scene cards really depends. The value is generally tied to the card's playability in eternal formats like Commander. Then there's the massive appeal of Final Fantasy that reshapes how the high end of scene cards look. The One Ring is rightfully high around $70, but Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Orcish Bowmasters, and Ozai, the Phoenix King are no slouches either around the $30 mark. On the low end, powerful cards like Mirkwood Bats and Rising of the Day do not get above $1.

Can You Use Your Promo Scene Card at Prerelease?

The promo scene cards weren’t intended for use at prereleases. They were meant to build excitement for the set and are not allowed in Sealed prerelease events.

What Are Scene Boxes?

Avatar: The Last Airbender Scene Box 1 - The Black Sun Invasion

A scene box is a special collection of six borderless cards that come with 3 additional boosters, and full-art, textless cards for the included display easel.

Avatar: The Last Airbender The Black Sun Invasion scene box is a scene and cards that allow Wizards to sell cards that are not a part of the main set, and deliver on an element that fans really connect with.

How Can I Display the Scene Cards?

No products found.

To display two rows of three scene cards the No products found. is one of the best options. It provides more sturdiness and protection than the provided display easel, it is infinitely easier to hang and offers ultra violet protection so you can show it off like an art installation. The alternative of binders is fine too, just not as fancy.

Battle of the Pelennor Fields scene | Illustration by Tyler Jacobson

I think that bringing the iconic scenes of beloved IPs is a smart move by WotC. It gives fans another adaptation of some of their favorite memories from the books or movies, and is inherently cool to collect. The Assassin's Creed, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Final Fantasy scenes shows they can dial up a scene in another setting a pull it off. These collectible scene cards do a great job of celebrating the artists and showing off some excellent magic art, and I can tell you that I’m excited to get the entire Final Fantasy 9 scene in my collection.

What do you think of the scenes and scene boxes? Will you track them down? What Universes Beyond, or plane within Magic's canon really deserves the next scene cards? Let me know in the comments, or over on the official Draftsim Discord.

Stay safe and draw well!

can you add the train combo (bi-lands full art) from outlaw of thunder junction, the map with the full-art lands from LOTR and some combo that i may forget please ?

Do love those, but they actually fall under a different classification of cards. Panoramic art and things like the LOTR map lands aren’t actually “Scene cards,” which is a specific type of card/collection of cards that Wizards makes.

  • condedooku December 3, 2025 3:42 am

The Basic Lands of Rise of the Eldrazi also are scene cards!

I think those get classified as “panoramic art” or something, but good shoutout regardless.
