Duskmourn: House of Horror is all about harrowing toys, impending doom, eerie rooms, and nasty things that want to eat you alive and chew you slowly, to extend your agony.

But such a distressing Magic set needs some underdogs that, against all odds, are strong and resourceful enough to survive no matter what.

Let's find out what it takes to be a survivor on the Duskmourn plane!

How Does Survival Work?

Survival abilities are triggered abilities that fire off at the start of your second main phase, as long as the creature with the survival ability is tapped at that time.

Shrewd Storyteller

Survival is an ability word: all creatures with survival behave similarly, but the exact effects of their ability vary. Some survivors add +1/+1 counters when they survive, some provide card advantage, some gain you life, etc.

Survival abilities don't care about how the survivor is tapped. It may have attacked, it may have entered tapped, it may have crewed a vehicle or saddled a mountโ€ฆ as long as it's tapped at the beginning of your second main phase, survival triggers.

All creatures with survival abilities have the โ€œsurvivorโ€ creature type, but other than serving as a reminder, the creature type and the ability arenโ€™t connected. If you have a changeling in play, itโ€™ll be a survivor (because changelings have all creature types) but it won't have any survival ability.

And there's an interesting caveat about how the trigger's resolution works. As it tries to resolve on the stack, the survival trigger will check again if the survivor is still tapped โ€“ if it is, the trigger resolves, but if it has been untapped by any effect, then the trigger fizzles.

This doesn't happen if the survivor is removed while still tapped. In this case, the trigger resolves even if the survivor is no longer on the battlefield.

The History of Survival in MTG

Rip, Spawn Hunter

The survival keyword was introduced to MTG with Duskmourn: House of Horror in September 2024. It's a creature-focused mechanic mostly seen in green cards and white cards.

Duskmourn's story being all about survival, the MTG design team wanted a mechanic that would represent taking actions to stay alive. โ€œThe reason you're a survivor is because you're doing something,โ€ wrote Head Designer Mark Rosewater when describing Duskmournโ€˜s mechanics. โ€œThe passive people don't make it.โ€

The team settled with tapping since it's directly tied to combat but also allows for other actions outside of the combat phase โ€“ after all, survival is often about not getting into fights.

A lot of vehicles allow you to tap your creatures without putting them in harm's way. Survivor creature Rip, Spawn Hunter has clear vehicle synergy!

Does Survival Work With Extra Main Phases?

No, survival does not work with extra main phases.

Survival abilities only trigger during your second main phase. Getting extra main phases during your turn โ€“ with effects like Relentless Assault or Seize the Day, for example โ€“ won't make survival trigger again. No matter how many extra main phases you get, you can only ever have one โ€œsecondโ€ main phase.

Is Survival Good?

Survival is a good mechanic that continues to get more support and some of the survival cards are powerful. It's not the focus of any tournament-menacing decks, and is pretty balanced since it trades off attackers and blockers for effects.

How Does Station Work With Survival?

Evendo, Waking HavenGlimmer Seeker

The station ability on spacecraft or planets work beautifully with survivors since they give you a non-combat way to tap and turn on the survival text. Take Evendo, Waking Haven and Glimmer Seeker, and you get a decent engine for glimmers, ramp and card draw.

Does Survival of the Fittest Have Anything to Do with the Mechanic?

Survival of the FittestAcrobatic Cheerleader

Survival of the Fittest has nothing to do with the mechanic, other than being able to tutor for the creatures you need. Fittest is a Game Changer enchantment, while the survival ability word wants to keep a tapped card on the battlefield.

Best Survival Cards

#5. House Cartographer

House Cartographer

House Cartographer is card advantage, even if that is restricted to lands. Don't get me started on the importance of mana curve and landfall.

#4. Cynical Loner

Cynical Loner

The lone black survivor, Cynical Loner works like an Entomb that can tutor your flashback spell or key reanimation target.

#3. Rip, Spawn Hunter

Rip, Spawn Hunter

Rip, Spawn Hunter has clear vehicle synergy and brings in some power-caring card advantage that supports many a creature strategy both in Constructed and Duskmourn Limited. And this survivor can make waves in any deck that wants to tap creatures. Convoke is Selesnyaโ€˜s signature mechanic, just saying!

#2. Reluctant Role Model

Reluctant Role Model

Boros convoke non-reluctantly loves Reluctant Role Model, which can even attack all by itself and survive if you drop it early. The flexibility is amazing, and the death trigger of moving counters from any creature you control onto others is kinda broken. I think this is one of the best Duskmourn cards in Standard.

#1. Kona, Rescue Beastie

Kona, Rescue Beastie

More like Kona, Designated Driver, this beastie's a great first pick thatโ€™s solid with survivors and slots right into your decks that convoke spells, crew vehicles, and saddle mounts.

Please don't take this as financial advice, but with more support due, I wouldn't sell Kona, Rescue Beastie for cheap if I open it in a Duskmourn draft.

Decklist: Saddle Up in Standard

Saddle Up was one of the decks from the Standard Deck Duels on MTG Arena, and you got the whole deck for free after you completed the event. This upgraded version won't break into Standardโ€˜s top decks. If you feel comfortable with Starter Deck Duel, and have earned a few rare wildcards this list won't be too taxing to craft, and will give you a good way to safely tap creatures on your way to winning some games.

Saddle Up is a Selesnya () deck (a survivor's favorite color pair!), and several of these plucky survivors fit right in: House Cartographer and Reluctant Role Model as early riders with nice bonuses, Defiant Survivor as a 3-drop that can start flooding the board on turn 3 if you played a mount on turn 2, and a few copies of the biggest, baddest survivors: Rip, Spawn Hunter and Kona, Rescue Beastie.

I've also added some alternative ways to tap creatures outside of attacking, including a few at high rarity like the Duskmourn vehicle, Unidentified Hovership, because it works both as removal and tapper for your own creatures. Larval Scoutlander is a ramping spacecraft that wants your survivors to station it. Water Tribe Rallier uses waterbending to turn survivors sideways and help fill your hand.

Mounts in general, and this deck in particular, are fairly aggressive โ€“ but remember that you don't need to attack if all you want to do is tap a creature. Saddling a mount taps the saddler, and keeps your creature out of combat if it doesn't make strategic sense.

Wrap Up

We made it! We made it out alive!

Survival is a fairly simple mechanic (โ€œTapped by the start of the second main phase? Trigger!โ€), but a couple of the survivors look strong enough to make waves in Constructed formats, and it seems like a bespoke mechanic for any vehicle-focused set. We have multiple mechanics that look to tap creatures outside of combat. I think we'll see this mechanic again quite often: From the point of view of flavor, it fits a lot of settings, and Magic is all about turning cardboard sideways.

I hope you've enjoyed this mechanical deep dive, and if you have comments or questions, please drop a comment below, or stop by the Draftsim Discord for a chat.

Good luck out there!
