Mutagen Token - Illustration by Madeline Boni

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles MTG crossover introduced a new predefined token: Mutagen.

Mutagen tokens are pretty simple (they’re basically a +1/+1 counter with extra steps), but let's check all the details of how this new artifact token works.

How Do Mutagen Tokens Work?

Mutagen tokens are a predefined artifact token introduced in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universes Beyond crossover (set code: TMT).

Mutagen

They’re pretty simple: You tap them, pay , and sacrifice them to give a target creature a +1/+1 counter.

That's it! The only caveat is that you can only activate Mutagen tokens at sorcery speed, so only when you have priority during your main phase while the stack is empty.

The History of Mutagen Tokens in MTG

Mutagen tokens debuted as part of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles MTG set, and they feed into its +1/+1 counter themes. It's unclear if these will be used again in the future or not.

Can You Sacrifice a Mutagen at Instant Speed?

Strictly speaking, yes, you can: If you have a sacrifice outlet that works at instant speed, like Krark-Clan Ironworks or Sai, Master Thopterist, you can sacrifice the mutagen token using it.

What you can't do is activate the token itself at instant speed, because it very clearly says: “Activate only as a sorcery.” You can't sacrifice the token to its own ability at instant speed.

Do Mutagen Tokens Count as Permanents?

Moonshadow

Yes, they do!

That's actually true for all tokens on the battlefield, of any kind: They’re all permanents, and they’re subject to anything that affects permanents in general. Just remember that tokens are not cards. That matters for cards like Moonshadow, which only triggers when a card goes to the graveyard.

Do Mutagens Go to the Graveyard?

Yep!

Tokens go to the graveyard if sacrificed or destroyed. Immediately after they arrive in the graveyard, they cease to exist and are removed from the game (without giving anybody priority to react to this). But they do trigger all abilities that go off whenever an artifact or permanent enters the graveyard.

Do Mutagen Tokens Work with Counter Doublers?

Yes, they do. A Mutagen token's effect is to place a counter on a creature; if there's a counter doubler in place, you get to place two counters.

Can Mutagens Target Other Players’ Creatures?

Kros, Defense Contractor

Yes, they can.

Mutagen tokens put a counter on any target creature; not just target creatures you control.

The only caveat is that you need to be able to target your opponent's creature (won't work against hexproof, shroud, protection, etc.). There aren’t many applications for this besides politics, though Mutagen tokens could work with Kros, Defense Contractor because it goads your opponents’ creatures when you place +1/+1 counters on them.

Can You Sacrifice a Mutagen to Another Effect and Still Get the Counter?

No, you can't.

To get the +1/+1 counter, you must activate the Mutagen’s ability, and sacrifice the token as part of that activation cost. You can’t sacrifice the token to pay for both its ability and another ability.

Gallery and List of Mutagen Cards

There are 19 cards that create Mutagen tokens in some way. The great majority are in the Simic () color identity.

Best Mutagen Cards

Mutagen Man, Living Ooze

Mutagen Man, Living Ooze

Mutagen Man, Living Ooze looks like the Mutagen tokens card for Standard, and it's probably among the best for Commander, too: You get Mutagen tokens when it enters, and they cost to activate when it's around.

That would be enough to make it interesting, but the real kicker is that the cost reduction works for any artifact token: Clue token and Food token decks are going to love Mutagen Man, Living Ooze!

The Ooze

The Ooze

For , The Ooze does two interesting things:

  1. It works as a sort of insurance for your +1/+1 counters by making Mutagen tokens for each +1/+1 counter on your creatures when they leave the battlefield.
  2. It's pretty solid graveyard hate with Mutagen tokens on top.

Graveyard hate that also advances your board state never feels dead, and the first ability turns any +1/+1 counter creature into a delayed pile of extra counters later. It should see quite a bit of play in Commander, and if counters become a thing in Standard, this legendary artifact could be a glue card that also keeps reanimation decks at bay.

Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11

Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11

Hello, Hardened Scales on legs!

Getting an extra +1/+1 counter from your other +1/+1 counter abilities definitely isn’t nothing, but Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11‘s “on legs” part is definitely a drawback: Creatures are a lot easier to kill than enchantments, and doubly so when they’re a puny 1/1.

Mikey will likely find its way into casual Commander decks. It could be a legit build-around in Standard if there’s a real counters deck.

Donatello, the Brains

Donatello, the Brains

Donatello, the Brains provides a nice little plus to any token-heavy decks: When you create tokens of any kind, you get a bonus Mutagen token. It doesn't have any particular synergy with Mutagens (or any other token, for that matter), so Doney's probably a bit underwhelming as a card that you can only play in Eternal formats.

Splinter, the Mentor

Splinter, the Mentor

Splinter, the Mentor is interesting in that it has synergy with two ninja abilities: ninjutsu and sneak. Both abilities require you to bounce one of your creatures to hand, and that counts as “leaving the battlefield“, so ol' Splinter adds a little bonus whenever your ninjas do what they'd love to do anyway.

Like Donatello, the Brains, that li’l bonus may be a tad too li’l. Splinter doesn't have any explicit Mutagen synergy itself, and you can't activate Mutagens in the middle of combat (which is when ninjutsu and sneak work), so you don't get any surprise buffs out of this trick.

It’s in black, though, which is usually interested in sacrifice synergies (both when you sacrifice your own creatures, which triggers Splinter, and when you sac a permanent, like when you activate the Mutagen token), so there's probably an Aristocrats-Ninja deck that wants Splinter, the Mentor.

Raphael, the Muscle

Raphael, the Muscle

Raphael, the Muscle gives you just a single Mutagen, once, but it has a clear payoff for all those +1/+1 counters you'll sling: It’s a damage doubler for all your buffed-up creatures!

Five mana for a 4/4 is quite below the vanilla test, but even if Raphael, the Muscle can't attack the turn you play it, its effect could be pretty big if you already have a big board.

April O'Neil, Human Element

April O'Neil, Human Element

Sadly, April O'Neil, Human Element doesn't have the “Partner—Character select” ability, else it could be a great Mutagen token commander with Donatello, the Brains or, above all, Leonardo, the Balance.

At any rate, April O'Neil, Human Element fits the 99 of any blue-leaning Mutagen token deck, and more broadly any deck that cares about tokens or artifacts… which happen to be a blue specialty. No blue deck worth its islands lacks instants and sorceries!

What makes April O'Neil, Human Element one of the best Mutagen token cards is that it triggers not just with your spells, but whenever any player casts an artifact, instant, or sorcery spell. Also notice that April's ability isn’t limited to once per turn, or your turn, so it's begging to be broken with an infinite combo.

Mona Lisa, Ever Adaptable

Mona Lisa, Ever Adaptable

Same as April O'Neil, Human Element, it's a pity Mona Lisa, Ever Adaptable doesn't have character select. But just like April, Lisa's color fits perfectly: No self-respecting green deck lacks creatures. Also same as April, there's no “once per turn” or “on your turn” limitations here… and Mona Lisa, Ever Adaptable triggers when any player casts a creature. Not just you!

Of course, you need creatures to put the +1/+1 counters from Mutagen tokens to good use… something green-leaning decks usually have no trouble providing.

And that's about it! Mutagen tokens are basically +1/+1 counters lying in wait. Just remember you can only activate them at sorcery speed, and the rest is fairly obvious.
