Wizards of the Coast continues its streak of crossover sets, and one of Magic's most fun, black-bordered sets keeps up that momentum. Magic returned to New York City for the action-packed Universes Beyond release featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This time around I pound the pizza slices, practice my martial arts, and dig into nostalgia around TMNT. I rely on teamwork to take on any baddies that mutated in the underground and seek wisdom from my sensei about this set.

About the Set: The Story

Dark Leo & Shredder | Illustration by Thomas Chamberlain-Keen
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set isnโt part of Magicโs main storylineโitโs a Universes Beyond release that honors the Turtles and everything theyโve meant to fans over the years. From their gritty comic book beginnings to the colorful Saturday morning cartoons, arcade and video games, the movies, and the shows of the 2020s, this set pulls together all those eras into one big tribute.
At its core, TMNT is about four mutant brothersโDonatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphaelโtrained by their wise mentor Splinter to fight evil in the streets and sewers of New York. They constantly clash with villains like Shredder and Krang, but they balance that action with their signature humor and heart, and of course, their love of pizza. Itโs a universe that mixes martial arts, sci-fi weirdness, and a strong sense of family, and all that energy is translated into Magic cards.
This set captures the TMNT flavor, humor, and action in a way that feels true to both franchises. Blake Rasmussen, Senior Communications Manager for Magic: The Gathering, shared during a WeeklyMTG on October 14, 2025 how personal this set was for him, emphasizing the nostalgia and passion that went into bringing the Heroes in a Half Shell to Magic.
One thing to note is that none of these cards actually use the hero or villain subtypes. The design team decided not to repeat the approach they used with Marvelโs Spider-Man, where those labels were front and center. Instead, TMNT focuses more on the charactersโ unique abilities, mechanics, and flavor to capture their roles in the story.
Secret Lairs
The sweetest art comes in Secret Lairs and in this case you get art from one of the original creators of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Kevin Eastman with four cards in color and black and white ink. The drops are $29.99 each for nonfoils, $39.99 for foils, and offered in collections of all the foils, all the nonfoils, or both for $399.99. The super drop queue started at 8 a.m. Pacific on March 2, 2026.

TMNT Mechanics

April O'Neil, Hacktivist | Illustration by Xabi Gaztelua
Sneak
Sneak is the big new mechanic in the TMNT set, and it pushes past the limitations of ninjutsu. While ninjutsu only lets you swap in a creature as an activated ability, sneak is a cast mechanic. That means you actually cast the card, which opens the door for instants and other spell types to use it.
A great example is Raphael's Technique, a Wheel of Fortuneโstyle instant. By using sneak, you can return an unblocked attacker to your hand and cast it for just . Suddenly, each player discards their hand and draws seven new cards in the middle of combat.
And if the card you sneak happens to be a creature, it doesnโt just enter the battlefield: It comes in tapped and attacking. Sneak is dangerous like Silver-Fur Masterโs ninjutsu because it turns every unblocked creature into a chance to cast another threat and keep the pressure on.
Disappear
You better believe ninjas know how to disappear, and there are definitely similarities with void and revolt here. Disappear is slightly different in that it counts any permanent that left the battlefield and only occurs at your end step. With Krang & Shredder the permanent that leaves needs to have been under your control, but you'll get a free spell that your opponent trashed. With Michelangelo, Game Master the benefit is a straightforward pump.
Mutagen Tokens
Mutagen tokens are a brand-new addition. They work a lot like Food or Clue tokens, but instead of lifegain or card draw, you pay 1 mana, sacrifice the token, and put a +1/+1 counter on a creature. Itโs only at sorcery speed, but when youโve got a deck that makes these tokens left and right, it adds up fast. Think of cards like April O'Neil, Human Element as a steady way to supercharge your ninjas and mutants.
Alliance
Slash, Reptile Rampager gives you a creaturefall trigger in alliance and a handy 2 damage to the face per creature. So as long as you like putting creatures into play, you'll like alliance.
+1/+1 Counters
One of the pervasive themes of the main set and the Turtle Power! Commander deck is building up +1/+1 counters. Almost every turtle in the deck has a way to hand out counters, and those counters make your creatures bigger and stronger over time like on Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11. Itโs the classic โgrow your teamโ strategy, and it ties perfectly into the Mutagen tokens that fuel the set.
Landcycling
The ever-handy landcycling on Bebop, Warthog Warrior, Jennika, Bad Apple Big Sister, Rocksteady, Crash Courser, Stockman, Mad Fly-entist, and Zog, Triceraton Castaway, are the breadsticks and butter to Limited decks as low-power, yet useful cards.
Cameo Mechanics
The Action News Crew reports live for channel 6 (or 3 depending on the source material), but this use of channel is cool. Raphael, Ninja Destroyer gets enraged when it gets damaged and Stomped by the Foot has kicker for flavor to go with the additional cost. Then there's the Weather Maker as a lone landfall card that turns lands you play into additional mana or a Lightning Bolt. Affinity makes a comeback on Utrom Monitor, Don & Raph, Hard Science, and Krang, Master Mind. It reduces the cost of a spell based on the number of artifacts you control. If youโve got a battlefield full of Treasure, Clue, or Mutagen tokens, you can slam down your big threats for way less mana.
Set Card Types
Class
Let the Turtle theme play and you know who Does Machines. The class enchantments add effects and capabilities as you pay the cost to unlock the next level.
Saga
The Last Ronin is a dark saga, a good vehicle for storytelling, and a temporary enchantment with unique effects that trigger thanks to lore counters.

Will TMNT Be on Magic Arena?
Yes, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is live on MTG Arena. Wizards of the Coast released the digital set, a few days before the tabletop launch on March 6. You got to sneak, crack Mutagen tokens, and play with all the Turtle-themed cards online right away. This is not an Omenpath-style crossover the way Marvelโs Spider-Man was.
If you play the TMNT set on Arena, be sure to download Draftsimโs Arena Tutor, your best tool to support your drafting decisions, track your collection, and much more!
Wrap Up

Leonardo, Sewer Samurai | Illustration by Ryan Pancoast
What I love most about this set is the translation of the true Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles essence onto Arena. I'm stoked this is not a Spider-Man vs. Omenpaths situationโwhere the digital version didnโt fully match what players have on paper. Can't pass up a chance to shout cowabunga while sneaking a ninja turtle onto the battlefield.
What do you like about the TMNT set? What was your entry point to the Turtle world: the comics, a toy, cartoons, arcade games, movies, or something else altogether? Let me know in the comments or on the Draftsim Discord.
