Aang and Katara | Illustration by Brian Yuen
New sets always offer a combo or two. How couldn't they, with hundreds of cards entering the pre-existing Magic ecosystem? Sometimes they offer new ways to combo with familiar cards like Intruder Alarm and Basking Broodscale; other times, new mechanics offer fresh combos that couldn't work without these new entries.
Avatar: The Last Airbender has both. If you want redundancy for an existing combo or to highlight how strong the cards from your favorite cartoon are, there's a combo for you!
What Are Combos in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Combos in Avatar: The Last Airbender (TLA) are combinations of two or more cards that either go infinite or provide an out-sized advantage that can win a game. The only other criteria is that they must contain one or more cards from TLA or Avatar: The Last Airbender Eternal.
The best combos use as few pieces as possible and use flexible pieces. You want to stay away from combos that require multiple expensive spells that do nothing but combo off in favor of cards that can be part of the combo or work alone. If they do just combo off, they must be as cheap as possible.
#15. Avatar Kuruk + Elvish Refueler
Cards: Avatar Kuruk (the backside of The Legend of Kuruk) + Elvish Refueler
Results: Infinite turns.
Prerequisites: You control both cards and have the mana to pay for Kuruk's waterbend ability each turn.
Variations: None.
This combo is funny and a great way to break two cards with excellent artโthough it's also rather weak. It takes a while to transform The Legend of Kuruk, which requires additional mana, and Elvish Refueler does little without Kuruk. But Commander was designed for combos like these, ones that require too much investment to be worth reaching for in competitive Constructed formats like Standard.
#14. Bumi, Unleashed + Ashaya, Soul of the Wild
Cards: Bumi, Unleashed + Ashaya, Soul of the Wild
Results: Infinite combats, infinite untaps of your lands.
Prerequisites: You control both permanents and Bumi, Unleashed can't be blocked.
Variations: None.
Bumi, Unleashed and Ashaya, Soul of the Wild offer a clean, easy infinite combat combo limited only by the high mana threshold: This combo costs a terrible 10 mana. But these cards naturally work well together, either as a package in a Commander deck or to support Bumi in the command zone.
#13. Fire Lord Zuko + Flicker Creatures
Cards: Fire Lord Zuko + Felidar Guardian + Restoration Angel
Results: Infinite enters/leaves the battlefield triggers, infinite +1/+1 counter distribution, infinite mana from firebending.
Prerequisites: You control Zuko and one of the flicker creatures and have the mana to cast the second.
Variations: You can replace either flicker creature with Icewind Stalwart.
If you pair Fire Lord Zuko with two flicker creatures, you get infinite +1/+1 counters spread across your team, plus infinite mana from Zuko's firebending ability. This combo works very well in a Zuko EDH deck because the two flicker creatures can win the game any number of waysโZuko is just one possible outlet to turn infinite flickering into a win. A few other options include Agate Instigator and Altar of the Brood.
#12. Koh, the Face Stealer + Pili-Pala + Magus of the Coffers
Cards: Koh, the Face Stealer + Pili-Pala + Magus of the Coffers
Results: Near-infinite mana, near-infinite life loss.
Prerequisites: Koh, the Face Stealer has exiled the other cards and doesnโt have summoning sickness; you control at least five swamps to go mana-positive.
Variations: Other creatures that tap for large amounts of mana can replace Magus of the Coffers, including Circle of Dreams Druid and Selvala, Heart of the Wilds.
I can't believe we broke Pili-Pala! How could Wizards let power creep go this far?
This combo doesn't really go infinite because you need to pour life continuially into Koh, the Face Stealer to switch between Pili-Pala's and Magus of the Coffersโs abilities, but the Magus produces large enough bursts of mana to get to a lethal Exsanguinate or Torment of Hailfire.
#11. Ashaya, Soul of the Wild + Bumi, Eclectic Earthbender + Zuran Orb
Cards: Ashaya, Soul of the Wild + Bumi, Eclectic Earthbender + Zuran Orb
Results: Infinite mana, infinite lifegain, infinite enters/leaves the battlefield triggers, infinite landfall triggers.
Prerequisites: You control all three permanents.
Variations: Any creature that earthbends when it enters can replace Bumi, including Badgermole Cub, Earthbending Student, and The Boulder, Ready to Rumble.
This combo fits cleanly with Ashaya, Soul of the Wild. Earthbend Bumi, Eclectic Earthbender with its enters trigger, tap it, then sacrifice it to Zuran Orb for infinite mana. It might not be the strongest combo in Avatar, but it's one of my favorites because it really exploits cards new and old in an interesting fashion rather than slot a new card into a familiar combo.
#10. Appa, Steadfast Guardian + Aang, Airbending Master + Cost Reduction
Cards: Appa, Steadfast Guardian + Aang, Airbending Master + Urza's Incubator
Results: Infinite storm, infinite cast-from-exile triggers, infinite experience counters, infinite ally tokens, infinite leaves the battlefield/exile triggers.
Prerequisites: You control the Incubator and either Appa or Aang, and you have the mana to cast the other.
Variations: Anything that makes your airbent permanent cost 0 works instead of Urza's Incubator. Semblance Anvil works, or you can use multiple cards that reduce their cost by 1, like Helm of Awakening and Pearl Medallion.
This combo acts like a double-flicker combo, except you need the extra step of a cost reducer so you can cast Appa, Steadfast Guardian and Aang, Airbending Master for no mana as they airbend each other. The combo's power lies in how many outlets this gives you to win: Storm and tokens and enters abilities galore allow you to win the game with little effort after you assemble the combo.
#9. Toph, the First Metalbender + Mindslaver
Cards: Toph, the First Metalbender + Mindslaver
Results: Control an opponent's turns for the rest of the game.
Prerequisites: You control both permanents and have the mana to activate Mindslaver.
Variations: Other cards like Academy Ruins and Emry, Lurker of the Loch can recur Mindslaver, though Toph is currently the frontrunner as it does it without the need to recast Mindslaver.
Have you ever looked at your opponent taking their turn and thought it was unfair that they're having all that fun and you aren't? Then you might be interested in this combo. Toph, the First Metalbender lets you earthbend Mindslaver so it returns to play, ready to crack again. This doesn't scale super well in Commander since you can only steal one player's turn at a time, though that can still stave off death, so try it in 1v1 formats like Brawl!
#8. Firebending Student + Turn Inside Out + Bulk Up
Cards: Firebending Student + Turn Inside Out + Bulk Up
Results: A 26/27 Firebending Student that can one-shot a player in a 20-life format.
Prerequisites: You control Firebending Student without summoning sickness and have the mana to cast Turn Inside Out and Bulk Up.
Variations: You can use Fire Lord Zuko instead of Firebending Student, though it ends up smaller and less efficient.
This combo goes out to the Standard players: Casting Turn Inside Out and Bulk Up on Firebending Student gives it the power for its firebending trigger to flashback Bulk Up for a lethal 1-shot! Be aware that this is exceedingly fragile; the Student has no built-in protection, though you might get a 2/2 back. If you miss Leyline of Resonance in Arena Bo1, this might be the combo for you.
#7. Joo Dee, One of Many + Intruder Alarm + Mana Dork
Cards: Joo Dee, One of Many + Intruder Alarm + Bloom Tender
Results: Infinite mana, infinite creature enters/leaves the battlefield triggers, infinite self-mill, infinite death triggers, infinite untap triggers.
Prerequisites: You control all three permanents and can activate Joo Dee and your mana dork(s).
Variations: Any mana dork that taps for at least goes infinite with Joo Dee and Intruder Alarm; you can replace Joo Dee with cards like Shrieking Drake and Whitemane Lion that bounce themselves.
Joo Dee, One of Many pairs with Intruder Alarm and mana dorks for a variety of wins. Infinite mana is the easiest, but you also get infinite death triggers for Blood Artist or enters triggers for Terror of the Peaks. That flexibility almost always finds a path to victory. Note that colorless mana dorks like Ornithopter of Paradise and Leaden Myr keep this combo in Dimir ().
#6. Monk Gyatso + Nomads en-Kor + Cost Reduction
Cards: Monk Gyatso + Nomads en-Kor + Semblance Anvil
Results: Infinite storm, infinite enters/leaves the battlefield triggers, infinite cast-from-exile triggers.
Prerequisites: You control all three permanents.
Variations: You can use Shuko instead of Nomads en-Kor, though you'll need an additional creature to target with the equipment.
Another airbending combo! This time, Monk Gyatso enables you to airbend and cast Nomads en-Kor as often as you like, so long as you have a cost reduction card like Semblance Anvil. The main use of this is infinite storm for cards like Aetherflux Reservoir, but it could work with Impact Tremors effects if you branch away from mono-white.
#5. Fire Lord Zuko + Hellkite Charger
Cards: Fire Lord Zuko + Hellkite Charger
Results: Infinite combats.
Prerequisites: Fire Lord Zuko has at least 7 power and both creatures can attack.
Variations: Firebending Student and Zuko, Firebending Master can replace Fire Lord Zuko. Alternatively, you can use Sozin's Comet with an additional creature to fuel the Charger.
Hellkite Charger is generally one of the strongest payoffs for firebending in Magic because it gives you an outlet for all that mana in combat that wins very quickly. Fire Lord Zuko will be paired with it most often because it's such a strong commander, but the combo has great flexibility because there are multiple ways to get the mana for infinite combats.
#4. Toph, the First Metalbender + Candelabra of Tawnos + Mana Vault
Cards: Toph, the First Metalbender + Candelabra of Tawnos + Mana Vault
Results: Infinite mana, infinite land untap triggers, infinite artifact untap triggers.
Prerequisites: You control all three permanents and have the mana to activate the Candelabra for X=2, which Mana Vault can provide.
Variations: Any mana rocks or lands that tap for more mana than it takes to untap them and Candelabra works for infinite mana. You can use two rocks that tap for 2 mana and so on, though those that tap for 3 mana work most efficiently, like Grim Monolith and Basalt Monolith.
This combo relies on Toph, the First Metalbender to let Candelabra of Tawnos untap itself because it becomes a land. Anything that taps for more than 2 mana goes infinite, and Mana Vault is the most efficient option. But you could go for nearly anythingโGaea's Cradle, Basalt Monolith, and so on. It's a great choice for a combo-centric Toph build rather than a midrange one.
#3. Katara's Reversal + Lithoform Engine + Mana Rocks
Cards: Katara's Reversal + Lithoform Engine + Mana Vault + Basalt Monolith
Results: Infinite mana, infinite untaps of permanents you control, infinite magecraft triggers.
Prerequisites: You control all the artifacts, and you have the mana to cast Katara's Reversal and copy it with Lithoform Engine.
Variations: You can use any permanent that taps to copy Reversal, including Kitsa, Otterball Elite plus any permanents that tap for more mana than it costs to copy the Reversal.
My favorite part of this combo is its flexibility. Each card functions outside the combo, but they occasionally unite to generate infinite mana. You just need to cast Katara's Reversal and copy it with Lithoform Engine; the copy then untaps the Engine and enough mana rocks/dorks to tap for more mana than the ability costs.
#2. Long Feng, Grand Secretariat + Basking Broodscale
Cards: Long Feng, Grand Secretariat + Basking Broodscale
Results: Infinite enters/leaves the battlefield triggers, infinite death triggers, infinite colorless mana, infinite counters on Basking Broodscale.
Prerequisites: You control both permanents and can cause a creature to die to trigger Long Feng.
Variations: Many cards can replace Long Feng, including Rosie Cotton of South Lane, Blade of the Bloodchief, and Sadistic Glee. You can replace the Broodscale with Scurry Oak or Herd Baloth plus a sacrifice outlet like Ashnod's Altar to kill the tokens.
Oh, look. Another card that goes infinite with Basking Broodscaleโwho could have guessed?
Long Feng, Grand Secretariat has two features that make it appealing over cards like Sadistic Glee and Blade of the Bloodchief: It's a creature and it's legendary. A Golgari creature () is easily found and recurred, and Long Feng can be the commander of a sacrifice-combo deck. The ease with which we can access Long Feng gives it merit compared to the cheaper options.
#1. Fire Lord Azula + Copy Spells
Cards: Fire Lord Azula + Fork
Results: Infinite magecraft triggers.
Prerequisites: Fire Lord Azula can attack, which provides the mana to cast Fork.
Variations: Any copy spell that you can copy works instead of Fork, including but not limited to Doublecast and Flare of Duplication.
One of the hottest commanders from TLA has a slew of infinite combos up its sleeve. If you cast Fork while Fire Lord Azula is attacking, your Fork copy can Fork your Fork and make that Fork copy Fork the original Fork for infinite magecraft triggers. It's a great combo if you want to level up your Azula deck.
Wrap Up

Avatar: The Last Airbender has a great suite of combos: Some of them add redundancy for older combos while others use new mechanics, and there are quite a few mono-colored combos to enhance your current brews. I like that none of the are crazy game-warping like Thassa's Oracle and Demonic Consultation.
What are your favorite combos from TLA? Are you looking forward to using any? Let me know in the comments below or on the Draftsim Discord!

Appa doesn’t really do anything for combo #13 since it specifies casting a spell from exile, not just entering like Zuko does
Good point, I’ve removed the mention of Appa there.
Joo Dee also goes infinite with a ham sandwich. Pitiless plunderer and a haste enabler makes her have infinite death/enters triggers and infinite surveil triggers, and that’s easy to exploit. Black/Red is having a field day with all of her possibilities.
Joo Dee’s such a sweet card for an uncommon.
