Every new set brings at least a handful of commanders that can be used to enjoy new EDH playstyles. Over the last few, the one that caught my attention the most is Bello, Bard of the Brambles. This raccoon commander turns mostly useless and forgotten cards into deadly weapons, and today, I’ll go over a cEDH deck that won a high stakes tournament!
Let’s jump into it.

With a high number of damage multipliers, some cards that let you break through defenses, and decent protection, Bello can catch opponents off guard and make a real impact in cEDH. Andrew Seltzer, the designer of the deck this list is based on, proved its feasibility in the Commander Invitational Qualifier.
The Commander: Bello, Bard of the Brambles
Bello, Bard of the Brambles is an explosive and surprisingly aggressive commander that brings a new take to cEDH by serving as an artifact and enchantment animator for high mana value permanents, turning them into game-winning threats.
Unlike other commanders that rely on regular creatures, Bello takes advantage of often-overlooked permanents that make a huge impact on the board, turning them into resilient threats to apply constant pressure to your opponents.
The Creatures
While the deck's main goal is to win using big artifacts and enchantments, it also includes a mix of value creatures, ramp, and aggressive threats that support its core strategy.
Starting with ramp, Herald of the Pantheon and Goblin Anarchomancer help reduce the cost of enchantments and Gruul spells (), making it much easier to play your high-mana-value enchantments. Fanatic of Rhonas serves a similar role, acting as a mana engine that can generate huge amounts of green mana once you have a 4-power creature in play—something that happens naturally as long as Bello is on the battlefield.
The deck also runs a variety of creatures designed to pressure your opponents in combat. Ohran Frostfang turns your entire board into deathtouching, card-drawing threats, making every attack a chance to refill your hand. Meanwhile, Xenagos, God of Revels doubles the power of one of your creatures at the beginning of combat, which can be devastating when paired with Bello’s animated artifacts and enchantments.
Pyrewood Gearhulk provides a massive board-wide buff, granting vigilance and menace while preventing damage from being negated—ensuring your attacks hit even harder. Roaming Throne is another key piece, doubling the triggers of creatures like Ohran Frostfang, allowing you to draw two cards per combat damage hit.
Threefold Thunderhulk generates a growing army of artifact creatures, further fueling Bello’s ability and giving you more bodies to apply pressure. Giggling Skitterspike rounds things out as an indestructible attacker that punishes opponents whenever it interacts in combat, making it an annoying and resilient threat on the battlefield.
The Removal and Interaction
Beyond just creatures and big-mana permanents, this deck has plenty of ways to disrupt opponents and maintain control. Disrupting threats early is key, and Chaos Warp and Beast Within offer flexible removal that can deal with almost anything on the board.
If creatures start overwhelming the battlefield, Chain Reaction and Blasphemous Act serve as powerful board wipes, resetting the game and giving you room to rebuild.
Keeping your board intact is just as important, especially when so many of your key pieces rely on staying in play. Instant-speed protection like Legolas's Quick Reflexes, Heroic Intervention, Tyvar's Stand, and Royal Treatment can protect your permanents from removal and essentially counter an opponent’s attempts to dismantle your setup.
Nevinyrral's Disk is a reset button that wipes out all artifacts, creatures, and enchantments—though be cautious, as it’ll take your own permanents down with it (except for permanents made indestructible by Bello). On the other hand, Aligned Hedron Network selectively exiles creatures with power 5 or greater, a great way to neutralize big threats while leaving your own animated artifacts and enchantments untouched.
Deflecting Swat is a free way to redirect removal, counterspells, or disruption as long as Bello is on the battlefield. Meanwhile, Stranglehold shuts down tutors and extra turns—two of the most powerful mechanics in cEDH—and it ensures your opponents can’t dig for answers or chain turns together.
The Win Condition
One of the best ways to secure a win is by making sure blockers aren't a problem in the first place. Bedlam prevents creatures from blocking entirely, making swinging out and closing the game effortless.
If your opponents do manage to keep creatures up, Gruul War Chant gives all your creatures menace, which forces them to block inefficiently, while Berserkers' Onslaught grants double strike, which turns even a small army of 4/4s into devastating attackers.
To push damage even further, the deck includes powerful damage multipliers that make every hit count for twice as much. Dictate of the Twin Gods and Gratuitous Violence both double the damage your creatures deal and ensure that even a single hit from an animated artifact or enchantment can put an opponent in danger. Meanwhile, Unnatural Growth doubles the power and toughness of all your creatures every combat, making your board impossible to ignore.
If raw combat damage isn’t enough, the deck has alternative win conditions that provide even more staying power. The Great Henge not only draws you extra cards but also buffs your creatures, ensuring they continue to grow stronger over time. March of the World Ooze turns every creature you control into a massive 6/6 while also messing with your opponents’ instant speed interaction.
The Mana Base
Two-colored decks usually won’t struggle too much to keep their mana clean. Still, it's important to run as many fixers as you can to cast spells that require 3 or more mana of the same color. Lands like Command Tower, Stomping Ground, Rootbound Crag, and Wooded Foothills ensure you have easy access to both colors, while Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth smooths out mana issues by making all lands into forests.
For ramp, Sol Ring and Arcane Signet provide fast acceleration, while Nature's Lore, Three Visits, and Farseek fetch lands directly onto the battlefield. Encroaching Dragonstorm has unimportant dragon text, but it's here as a double-ramp piece that can be animated with Bello.
Other notable lands include Reliquary Tower to let you keep all the extra cards you draw and Kessig Wolf Run to serve as a mana sink that gives trample and extra power to push through defenses.
The Strategy
The game plan is to ramp into Bello quickly (ideally by turn 3) and start playing high-impact artifacts and enchantments like The Immortal Sun, The Great Henge, or Akroma's Memorial—all of which become indestructible 4/4 creatures with haste thanks to Bello.
Once Bello, Bard of the Brambles is on the field, focus on keeping up the pressure and drawing cards through combat. Ohran Frostfang, Garruk's Uprising, and The Great Henge ensure that you never run out of cards. Uprising and Nylea, God of the Hunt provide trample to help you connect and draw cards with Bello's second ability.
Against control decks, Chimil, the Inner Sun makes your spells uncounterable, and protection spells like Heroic Intervention safeguard you from board wipes.
Combos and Interactions
While the deck has a few looping value engines, it doesn’t contain true infinite combos that can outright win the game instantly. If you’re interested in adding hard infinite combos, here are some options you should consider.
If you have Threefold Thunderhulk and Roaming Throne (choosing gnome as the creature type), every time Thunderhulk enters or attacks, it triggers twice and creates Gnome tokens equal to its power both times. If you have a free sacrifice outlet like Ashnod's Altar (not in the current deck but a possible addition), you can:
- Sacrifice a Gnome to add .
- Use that mana to pump Thunderhulk increasing its power.
- Attack and create exponentially more Gnomes every turn.
This can lead to increasing Gnome tokens and infinite card draw if paired with Ohran Frostfang.
Molten Echoes and Threefold Thunderhulk also come together to make an expanding number of gnomes when you attack each turn.
This isn’t a true infinite combo, but it instantly kills an opponent if you stack the right triggers.
- Bello animates a big artifact into a 4/4.
- Xenagos, God of Revels doubles its power during combat, making it an 8/8.
- Dictate of the Twin Gods doubles damage dealt, so it attacks for 16 damage.
- If you have Berserkers' Onslaught, it gets double strike, meaning it effectively deals 32 damage in one combat.
- If you add Unnatural Growth, you can one-shot multiple opponents in a single turn.
Budget Options
If you're looking to build Bello, Bard of the Brambles on a budget, don't worry—you can still create a powerful and explosive deck without spending a fortune. The key is finding solid replacements for the pricier staples while keeping the core strategy intact. For example, instead of expensive mana rocks, you can use Llanowar Elves and Elvish Mystic to speed up your early game.
For card draw, Garruk's Uprising pulls double duty by making sure your animated creatures have trample and rewarding you with extra cards whenever you drop your commander and any other 4-power creature onto the battlefield.
Abrade is a fantastic budget alternative to premium removal spells like Chaos Warp, as it’s flexible and lets you deal with either a small creature or a problematic artifact. If you're looking for budget-friendly board wipes, Starstorm and Burn Down the House are fine options.
One of the easiest ways to save money when building Bello, Bard of the Brambles is by adjusting the mana base. Instead of splurging on high-cost lands like Stomping Ground, Wooded Foothills, and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth, you can opt for budget-friendly alternatives.
A great place to start is with lands that enter tapped but offer solid color fixing. Highland Forest and Gruul Guildgate are easy-to-find options that provide consistent access to red and green mana. If you want dual lands that sometimes enter untapped, Mossfire Valley is a reasonable Gruul land. Similarly, Game Trail can enter untapped if you reveal a basic land from your hand.
For added consistency, Temple of Abandon offers a scrying effect when it enters, helping you smooth out your draws. Meanwhile, Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse allow you to fetch whichever basic land you need while thinning your deck.
While these budget lands may not be as fast as expensive fetches and shock lands, they still provide solid mana consistency and allow you to keep your deck affordable.
Other Builds
The beauty of Bello, Bard of the Brambles is that you don’t have to stick to just one playstyle. There are plenty of other ways to build around this raccoon bard, depending on what kind of deck you enjoy playing. One cool take is the vehicles build—since Bello naturally animates artifacts, vehicles become serious threats without even needing to be crewed. Cards like Esika's Chariot, Thunderhawk Gunship, and Nautiloid Ship become indestructible beaters that draw cards when they hit. You can also add Smuggler's Copter and Cultivator's Caravan for extra synergy.
Another approach is the 4-power matters build, which capitalizes on the fact that Bello consistently turns permanents into 4/4 creatures. You can start with cards like Fanatic of Rhonas and Ilysian Caryatid.
If you love going wide, you can lean into a token-based Bello deck. Cards like Skitterbeam Battalion and Esika's Chariot naturally create extra creatures, which become powerful when animated. If you pair this with Nature's Will, you can untap all your lands in every combat, leading to massive turns.
