Magic: The Gathering is known for its unique settings and characters. The game constantly reimagines classic fantasy races and classes as planeswalkers visit new planes and worlds. A fan-favorite plane is Mirrodin (now New Phyrexia), home of the myr, Magic’s lovable little artifact-creature-worker-robots.
The myr were created by Memnarch and served as single-purpose worker drones. After the Phyrexian invasion, Memnarch was slain, but many myr continued about their tasks undisturbed. Some developed intelligence and free will, becoming named legendary creatures in their own right.
Whatever their modus operandi, the myr are one of Magic’s most iconic creature types. It should come as no surprise that folks need a myr commander to lead their myr EDH deck!
While there are only two “true” myr commanders, there are a few that synergize well with our little mechanical friends. Let’s look at the best Myr commanders in Magic!
What Are Myr Commanders in MTG?

Myr commanders include any legendary myr creature, plus any non-myr that synergize well at the helm of an army of myr. There’s only one actual myr legend, and it’s the only one that can technically run every one of the myr cards. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use the restrictions placed on your color identity by other myr commanders to make a truly unique deck.
Myr act as a sort of catch-all for the Magic sets they’re released in. They often fill in the gaps of design between colors by virtue of being almost entirely colorless artifact creatures.
Take Suntouched Myr, for example. This myr is a 3-mana colorless creature with sunburst, one of Fifth Dawn’s set mechanics. Sunburst on a colorless creature helps players access that effect without splashing into more colors. Or check out Knighted Myr, which bridges the gap between myr creatures and modular creatures onto a single card.
Some myr act as mana dorks, others synergize with equipment and other artifacts, while some are inarguably just beaters (Myr Battlesphere). There’s a myr for every task on Mirrodin; we just need to find the right ones!
#7. Lita, Mechanical Engineer / The Mechanist, Tactical Tinkerer
I love untap effects and Lita, Mechanical Engineer / The Mechanist, Tactical Tinkerer gives me Wilderness Reclamation vibes which are powerful to have in the command zone. Get plenty of myr you want to tap, and if you need ideas, just look to white's strength in convoke, saddle, stations, and vehicles.
#6. Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain
Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain is a generally advantageous artifact commander without much drawback. Its value as a myr commander lies in its ability to effectively turn every myr you cast into a cantrip, replacing itself in your hand. This isn’t so bad of an effect, but it could synergize much better with myr.
On the plus side, running an Izzet commander barely locks you out of any myr creatures! You lose out on a few dorks like Copper Myr and Leaden Myr but compensate for it by keeping access to Sarcomite Myr and Parcel Myr. Nice!
#5. Alibou, Ancient Witness
Alibou, Ancient Witness works surprisingly well for a myr deck. At first glance, you may be turned off by its attack trigger – you don’t want to lose your fragile myr creatures in combat just for a little bonus damage. However, you don’t need to attack with the myr to get Alibou’s full value. Many of the myr have “tap-to-activate” activated abilities, meaning you can tap them as mana abilities or other utility effects before combat and only risk something safe like a Darksteel Myr.
Alibou’s a real “first main phase” commander; activating a ton of tappable artifacts to dig through your library and stick a big artifact creature like Darksteel Colossus. If you’re interested in a myr deck but don’t want to force the little guys to fight for their lives, Alibou could be the myr commander for you!
#4. Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut
On the other hand, if you do want those myr to fight for their lives, consider Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut as the colorless commander of your myr EDH deck.
While Graaz is a steep 8 mana, and its colorless identity means you have to omit a full 10 myr from your card pool, it’s just about the best way to turn your myr into lean, mean, juggernautin' machines.
Myr creatures tend to cost between 1 and 3 mana. You can quickly fill your board with myr, then drop Graaz and swing in for 20+ damage as your total power on the board is multiplied exponentially.
Graaz’s biggest downside is that those myr must attack each turn if able. Luckily, many have tap-to-activate effects you can use in your first main phase if you don’t want to risk them in combat.
#3. Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer
Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer is a classic Boros commander that used to be the king of metalcraft decks back in 2012. Nowadays, Jor Kadeen has been mostly outclassed by the newer Boros () artifact commanders, but it still makes a great leader for an aggressive and warlike myr deck. Locking you into a Boros color identity means you lose out on the blue myr, but get to keep Frogmyr Enforcer and Knighted Myr.
Jor Kadeen’s +3/+0 anthem doesn’t look like much, but it really powers up those myr into actual combat threats. Their low toughness means they’ll be very fragile, but white has tons of ways to either grant first strike (Valor) or recur those cheap artifacts (Recommission).
#2. Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer
Despite its appearance and abilities, Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer is not a myr. Brudiclad has been Phyrexian-ized and became a 6-mana 4/4. However, Brudiclad does make myr creature tokens, even if it’s not meant to use them.
Brudiclad’s ability allows you to create one 2/1 Phyrexian Myr creature token, and then make each token you control a copy of a token you control. The real game plan here is to get your hands on an 8/8 Kraken token and turn your free 2/1 Phyrexian Myr creatures into 8/8s as well, but there’s something to be said for leaning into the actual myr creatures.
Since Brudiclad’s ability doesn’t specify “creature tokens,” there are some goofy combos you can pull off.
Let’s say you’ve filled your board with Clue tokens and Food tokens for the first few turns; you can surprise your foes by casting Brudiclad and turning your board into an army of 2/1 myr, all of which can attack right away. This is a cute, if sub-optimal build for Brudiclad, but it’s one of the best ways to make it work as your myr commander.
#1. Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch
Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch is the only true myr commander. Urtet is a 2/2 for 3 generic mana that creates a 1/1 Myr artifact creature token whenever you cast another myr spell. Since myr are on average very cheap, Urtet can swell your board very quickly if left unanswered.
Urtet also untaps all myr you control at the beginning of combat. This is useful because many of the myr have abilities that require them to tap to activate, including Palladium Myr or Alloy Myr. Now, you typically wouldn’t want to attack with all those 1/1 and 2/2 myr; they usually won’t stand up to your opponents’ creatures. However, Urtet lets you pay and tap it to put three +1/+1 counters on each myr you control. Buffing your myr with a permanent Giant Growth is usually enough to turn them into actual threats. If you activated Urtet’s ability by tapping your dork-myr, you’ll have another opportunity to drop +1/+1s on your board before you attack, as well.
Urtet is the best myr commander, as it’s the only one that actually interacts with a deck full of myr creatures. While Brudiclad and Jhoira and Jor Kadeen can all use the myr in your deck to generate various forms of advantage, Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch is their only true leader in the absence of Memnarch (or Karn, I guess).
Best Myr Payoffs
Building a deck entirely based around one creature type comes with certain expectations. You’re expected to run the suite of typal-synergy artifacts like Chronicle of Victory and Banner of Kinship, but I’d like to call out Obelisk of Urd as another that works especially well with the myr creatures. Urtet’s additional Myr tokens mean you’ll be able to convoke this big typal buff onto the field at a moment’s notice.
Don’t forget the essential Myr Matrix, either! In addition, any number of artifact synergies will play nice with the Myr, including Darksteel Forge and Unwinding Clock. Myr are artifact creatures afterall, so Tempered Steel, Cyberdrive Awakener, and Cryptothrall work extremely well.
Is Myr Tribal Good?
Yes! While myr may not be the physically strongest creature type, they have a lot of utility. Plus, you can make almost any creature type work with the aforementioned typal synergy artifacts. The printing of a dedicated myr commander like Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch seals the deal and cements myr typal as playable.
Commanding Conclusion

The myr are one of my favorite Magic creations. They’re a unique race of artifact creatures without comparison in other fantasy media. They tell a tragic tale of Mirrodin’s fall from grace, and, despite having no canonical personalities, they have the power to elicit emotional responses from Vorthos and Melvins alike.
What are your favorite myr creatures? Do you think we’ll ever return to Mirrodin? Will we get a myr-focused Magic set sometime soon? Let me know in the comments, or over on Draftsim's Twitter/X.
