Hello planeswalkers! Is there a more frustrating feeling than having your bomb creatures die to simple removal like Doom Blade? Luckily, MTG has a few protective keyword abilities to ensure your big nasties stay nasty. Today, we’ll check out how to give your favorite permanents the hexproof ability.
Hexproof fits the magic-slinging theme of MTG to its core. When you target me, I respond with some protection. Many cards have hexproof printed on them, but there’s still hope to protect cards lacking this keyword. We’re taking a look at the best cards that provide your creatures and permanents with the protection of hexproof.
What Are Hexproof Enablers?

Heroic Intervention | Illustration by James Ryman
Hexproof enablers are spells and abilities that give permanents hexproof. These effects range from instants used for a single turn of protection from removal spells to static abilities that give all your creatures or permanents hexproof. We’ll also include bomb equipment and aura cards that give creatures hexproof.
The key for this article is that the spell or ability has to give hexproof to some type of permanent. Some spells and abilities give hexproof to permanents and players. Those cards will be included, but simply giving yourself hexproof isn't grounds for inclusion.
#35. Curator’s Ward
Curator's Ward is a simple 3-mana aura that provides hexproof and an extra benefit to historic cards. There isn’t much to describe here; you know what you’re getting. You can protect a card like Basim Ibn Ishaq with hexproof, and if it dies, draw two cards to gain an advantage.
#34. Glaring Spotlight
Glaring Spotlight has an interesting static ability, with an even better activated one. Who doesn’t want to get rid of an opponent’s hexproof? This may not come up often, but when it does, it frees up your removal. The sac ability here makes your creatures unblockable and protects them with a bit of hexproof.
#33. Dawnglade Regent
Wow, an 8/8 that gives all your permanents hexproof, this should be a fantastic card! Hold your horses (or elk in this case). Dawnglade Regent does provide these great things, but at a steep cost. The mana value is quite high, and you have to be the monarch to grant the hexproof. Both of these factors make it difficult to extract all the good from this card.
#32. Archetype of Endurance
Archetype of Endurance feels like it must be on this list because it only deals with hexproof. The high MV is an instant turn-off, but protecting your creatures, while unprotecting your opponents’ is a valuable thing. This card feels like it needs to be cheated onto the battlefield to extract the most value possible.
#31. Drogskol Captain
Spirits are one of the most underrated typal builds out there. Drogskol Captain instantly adds value to any spirit deck. As a spirit lord, this card provides power, toughness, and hexproof to all of your spirit creatures. I’m not sure what else you need in a typal support card.
#30. Jirina, Dauntless General
Jirina, Dauntless General is a solid and cheap addition to Orzhov () human decks. It has a useful ETB trigger as well as the ability to sacrifice and protect all of your human creatures. The MV and abilities make Jirina a wonderful addition to any human decks that include white and black.
#29. Bulwark Ox
Bulwark Ox is easily my favorite mount card from Aetherdrift. This card can be a solid piece in a +1/+1 counter deck to give some counters and protect the creatures you’ve invested in. The MV and saddle cost are well worth this card's early-game presence and late-game protection.
#28. Restoration Magic
Restoration Magic is a modal protection card that also gives you some lifegain. A 1-mana hexproof- and indestructible-granting instant is valuable against the hordes of removal out there. Paying 5 mana protects all your creatures and offers even more lifegain. This tiered spell can instantly enter some white lifegain decks.
#27. Dragonfire Blade
The swords of MTG are often quite good, and Dragonfire Blade is a great example of this. This equipment provides a good pump and hexproof protection from mono-colored sources. Since the majority of targeted removal is mono-colored, this is great protection. Another upside to love is that your multicolored cards make the equip cost even cheaper.
#26. Invasion of Gobakhan / Lightshield Array
The problem with battles is that they often take away from your curve and your pressure on opponents. Invasion of Gobakhan can be quite advantageous if played and attacked early. The low MV and defense make this an easy target for aggressive decks. Once flipped, Lightshield Array grows your attacking creatures each turn, and provides a great protection ability.
#25. Alpha Authority
Sometimes the simplest of enchantments make all the difference. For the low cost of 2 mana, you get hexproof and blocking restrictions for your opponents with Alpha Authority. The simple use and execution of this card also reveals its weaknesses. This card provides great protection, but is limited in its scope and use.
#24. Privileged Position
I love permanents that are flexible and straight to the point, like Privileged Position. This enchantment provides board-wide hexproof, which is a great protection from the multitudes of permanent hate out there. The MV isn't quite curve-effective, but the hybrid mana helps. Enjoy your privilege if you can include this card in a deck.
#23. Everybody Lives!
Apart from the entertaining name, Everybody Lives! is a great Fog-adjacent card. It affects all creatures and players, but you should play it when it benefits you the most. With this card, you can bring almost any action to a halt, and… everybody lives!
#22. Guardian Augmenter
Guardian Augmenter makes this list for its Commander implications. You get a stat boost for your commander and hexproof, all at instant speed. This card is a wonderful addition to any green Commander deck that can spare the spot.
#21. Inspirit, Flagship Vessel
Let’s check in on the new spacecraft from Edge of Eternities. With the station mechanic, you need to tap creatures to gain the advantages of Inspirit, Flagship Vessel. If you station up to 8, you then have serious protection for your artifacts.
#20. Silkguard
A modified deck’s dream, Silkguard protects your modified creatures for cheap. The upside comes from the X-value that can add counters to unmodified creatures, making them modified and thus protected. Another similar protection card for Eternal format players is Tyrant Guard.
#19. Avabruck Caretaker / Hollowhenge Huntmaster
This high MV werewolves can really “pack” a punch. You have to love it when both the night and day sides of a card from Innistrad are great. Avabruck Caretaker pumps your creatures with protection for itself. But when it becomes night, Hollowhenge Huntmaster comes out to protect all of your permanents. The value of both sides are apparent and you loosely have some control over the day or night timing in the game.
#18. Bilbo’s Ring
Bilbo's Ring has great abilities at an expensive price, unless it’s in a halfling deck. In any kind of deck, the upside of an unblockable creature that draws you a card and is protected by hexproof may be worth the investment. For the utmost benefit, you can attach this ring to halflings like Frodo, Sauron's Bane or Erinis, Gloom Stalker.
#17. Simic Charm
The dual-colored charms of Magic always have value. Simic Charm gives you the options of pump, protection, and bounce. You have to love the versatility that this brings, especially in combat. For our purposes, we like the instant hexproof protection for your permanents.
#16. Smuggler’s Surprise
Smuggler's Surprise is almost an obligatory add to this list, even if the main aim is not hexproof. Let’s be honest, you want this card to cheat your massive threats onto the battlefield. However, if you need to protect your creatures with power 4 or greater, this card grants hexproof for cheap.
#15. Mutational Advantage
As a Fallout fan, I’ve gushed over many cards from the Fallout set. One of the most solid instants from the set is Mutational Advantage. This Simic card protects all your creatures with counter investments, as well as the always useful proliferate effect. The instant speed protection and proliferation make this a very loveable card.
#14. Overprotect
There are several 2-mana protection spells that should be highlighted in this list. Two-mana protection spells often provide more upside than just protection, like the 1-mana instants coming up.
My favorite is Overprotect, and from its namesake, you know what it can do. Other great 2-mana protection (and pump) instants are Gaea's Gift, Lazotep Plating, and Bombadil's Song. Throw in Collective Resistance for good measure because of its escalation.
#13. Saryth, the Viper’s Fang
Saryth, the Viper's Fang has quite an interesting effect on the battlefield. First, all your untapped creatures are granted hexproof, protecting your most valuable creatures from targeted removal. Next, your attacking, tapped creatures become deadly with deathtouch, forcing tough decisions on your opponents. Finally, you have the activated ability to instantly untap a creature or land to best suit the interactions happening on the stack.
#12. Dawn’s Truce
The wide protection net of Dawn's Truce makes it a valuable white card for protecting your creature-heavy decks. In addition, you get hexproof to stop sacrifice or discard effects, and by gifting a card, you can stop mass non-exile removal. Versatility is key in MTG, and this protection spell provides a lot.
#11. Zur, Eternal Schemer
Zur, Eternal Schemer is a perfect Esper card () to command or be included in an enchantment deck. This card animates your non-aura enchantments and gives them a whole bunch of useful keywords, including hexproof. Zur becomes killer when you animate high MV enchanments that you can cast for cheap, like Overlord of the Hauntwoods and Leyline Binding.
#10. Asceticism
Asceticism is a killer name for a card, and this one provides solid protection for your creatures. The oracle text has been shortened to just give your creatures hexproof. The activated ability makes it even more valuable. Hexproof and regeneration is a great way to keep your battlefield presence.
#9. 1-Mana Hexproof-Granting Instants
We can lump a ton of great instants into this category to be concise. The upside of these cards is their MV of 1 and the speed of protecting your most valuable creatures and permanents. Some of the most useful ones are: Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Veil of Summer, Shardmage's Rescue, Surge of Salvation, and Snakeskin Veil.
But fear not: There are plenty more. These are just the ones I found in my quick search: Tyvar's Stand, Legolas's Quick Reflexes, Loran's Escape, Shore Up, Blacksmith's Skill, Royal Treatment, and Blossoming Defense.
#8. Sigarda, Font of Blessings
Sigarda, Font of Blessings is another protective angel, similar to Shalai, Voice of Plenty coming up. I like that Shalai protects you, the player, as well and gives counters, but Sigarda has value as a Future Sight for angel and human cards. I think it’s hard to go wrong with the hexproof protection of either angel, but Shalai is better in my opinion.
#7. Skrelv, Defector Mite
This Skrelv is a nasty little mite! Skrelv, Defector Mite provides color-specific hexproof as protection or enables poisoning your opponent to death. This protection and flexibility of activating its ability ensures Skrelv, Defector Mite is put into many competitive Constructed decks.
#6. Champion’s Helm
What better creatures to protect than your legendary ones? Champion's Helm is a relatively cheap equipment with a solid pump to equip cost ratio. The key here is that it also gives an equipped legendary creature hexproof. Since this Helm is a colorless artifact, it can be slotted into any legendary-matters deck.
#5. Flare of Fortitude
You have to put a high value on instants that can be cast for free. Flare of Fortitude is a mass creature protection spell that can save you from losing life. The true value comes from casting it for free if you can sacrifice a nontoken white creature.
#4. Shalai, Voice of Plenty
Shalai, Voice of Plenty is a stellar 4-drop angel. This card provides hexproof protection for you, your planeswalkers, and your creatures. Impressive! This hyperfocuses removal on Shalai, which isn’t the worst outcome. And this card packs a late-game punch by pumping your creatures. Shalai, Voice of Plenty is a great addition to an angel deck.
#3. Padeem, Consul of Innovation
Similarly to Shalai, Voice of Plenty above, Padeem, Consul of Innovation provides general hexproof protection with benefits. This 4-MV creature provides hexproof to all your artifacts, which leads to huge benefits when you are drawing more cards. Padeem gets the edge over Shalai because of the consistent card draw at no cost but having your good artifacts on the battlefield.
#2. Swiftfoot Boots
Swiftfoot Boots is one of the premier equipment in the game. This equipment fits right into many curves, has a cheap equip cost, and makes your bomb creatures even more of a threat. You can equip on the cheap and swing quickly, while still being protected by hexproof. What’s not to love?
#1. Heroic Intervention
Heroic Intervention is the go-to protection spell in many players’ minds. It’s cheap, fast, and casts a wide net of protection. This instant provides hexproof and indestructible to all of your permanents with no restrictions. That’s why it’s so popular, because it’s just effective.
Wrap Up

Thanks for taking the time to check out this article on hexproof-granting cards. Knowledge is power, and now you have the power to protect those bomb permanents with hexproof-granters. Hexproof is one of those keywords that might not be your main strategy, but it comes in handy in so many situations.
