MTG x Fallout Announcement Image

MTG x Fallout Announcement Image

Magic has always loved visiting new realms and new planes, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that its Universes Beyond products take players to other fantastical and sometimes horrifying worlds. We’ve fought off hordes of The Walking Dead with Rick and Michonne. Transformers have shown us that they’re more than meets the eye. We’ve even had our Second Breakfast, and what a feast it was.

And this time set our multiversal-time-traveler-thingy (I’m sure there’s a better word for this) forward and a lil sideways, to an alternate future where it rains radiation and the mosquitoes are as big as your cat.

Strap on your Big Iron and grab some Radaway: we head to the wastelands of Fallout!

Fallout came to Magic in the form of preconstructed Commander decks, to represent the different factions grappling for power and survival in a post-apocalyptic wasteland that was once an alt-universe United States.

2024 is a pretty big Fallout year for Bethesda. Not only is the game now a part of Magic: The Gathering, but the long-awaited Fallout TV series joins Amazon Prime in the first half of 2024. It makes sense that Bethesda gives this franchise some love this year: It’s the 20th anniversary of the year that they acquired the rights to Fallout from Interplay. Maybe we’ll get something more substantial about Fallout 5 too!

The Story

Fallout is set in the irradiated wasteland that used to be the United States of America. It’s a desolate land known for mutated monsters and frequent radiation storms. Across the continent (and at slightly different times), many groups jockey for power and resources. Some of the most iconic factions include the Enclave, the self-proclaimed continuation of the American government; the Brotherhood of Steel, a code-bound group of soldiers who aim to keep technology out of “the wrong hands;” and the New California Republic or NCR, a republic that has risen from the ashes on the West Coast that idealizes democracy and freedom.

These three factions aren’t the only ones to call the wasteland home. Humans can turn into zombie-like ghouls when exposed to too much radiation too suddenly or for too long. Some factions have also developed a forced evolutionary virus (or F.E.V.) that turns a regular human into a hulking, usually green super mutant. Not to mention deathclaws, yao guai, radscorpions, mirelurks, and the many other fearsome wasteland creatures.

Set Mechanics

Junk Tokens

Dogmeat, Ever Loyal Junk

One of the brand new mechanics in the Fallout release is a Junk token! These tokens can be sacrificed to get a bit of card advantage off the top of your library. As you might expect, the impulse draw focuses junk in and the accumulating artifact tokens in Magic pile up.

Radiation

Rad counters are the most on-theme mechanic in the Fallout release. They begin to add up from other sources, and at the beginning of your precombat main phase, you mill cards equal to the number of Rads you have. After that, you lose rad counters (and life!) equal to the number of nonland cards milled. Pretty simple, right?

Energy Counters

Dr. Madison Li Energy Reserve

Energy counters aren't new by any means, but they're back for the first time in a long time with Fallout. They're specifically contained to the “Science!” precon, which uses them for everything , and from card advantage to artifact reanimation.

More Tokens

We get a Wasteland Survival Guide that looks for quest counters involved in eight cards in Fallout. We also see some ways to show Magic actions with Fallout style, like unique food and treasure.

They each have about 40 new Magic cards, two foil commanders, a life tracker, and a sample collector booster with two alternate frame cards, at least one of which is rare or mythic.

Hail, Caesar

Hail, Caesar

Hail, Caesar features the classic villain from the Fallout franchise in a Mardu tokens strategy complete with soldiers, raiders, and the squad mechanic. It has 37 new cards and its commander, Caesar, Legion's Emperor, gives you a choice of multiple options in the format of an on-attack triggered ability. You can either create some attacking creatures, draw a card, or deal damage equal to the total number of creature tokens you control to an opponent!

Just about all of those options are good, and it hinges on being able to keep on the offensive.

Scrappy Survivors

Scrappy Survivors

Scrappy Survivors takes auras and equipment to a whole new level in Naya with 38 new cards. Its commander is Dogmeat, Ever Loyal, which gives you easier access to your equipment and auras throughout the game. It also creates Junk tokens, which give you instant-speed card advantage!

I really like this one. A cheap commander, card advantage, and a clear synergy are all great things to see on a precon legendary. The second commander is pretty exciting too Preston Garvey, Minuteman does a gradual Chromatic Lantern impression, and swings it into the ramp by attacking and untapping all your enchanted permanents.

Mutant Menace

Mutant Menace

The Sultai precon is Mutant Menace (with 41 new cards and has less mutate and menace than you might think). The Wise Mothman is its commander. Our mothman is a 3/3 flyer for four that gives players rad counters every time it ETB‘s or attacks. Rad counters mark radiation buildup, and each player mills cards equal to the number of rad counters in their first main phase. Then, they lose one life and a rad counter for each nonland card milled that way. Fun!

The second half of our commander puts one +1/+1 counter on X creatures whenever cards are milled where X is the number of nonland cards milled. The secondary commander The Master, Transcendent can to pull milled creatures onto the battlefield. See the interaction?

Science!

Science!

Last, but certainly not least, is Science! This Jeskai deck with 38 new cards recharges your drive to use energy counters. It contains a bunch of ways to generate energy counters, including its commander's triggered ability, and more than enough ways to spend them. Specifically, the alternate commander Liberty Prime, Recharged is a conditionally huge body that turns artifacts into clues that also provide a pair of energy. Dr. Madison Li can buff creatures, draw cards, and reanimate artifacts! Wow, that last one is certainly something.
