T'Challa, the Black Panther

The Marvel Super Heroes debut yesterday spoiled a flurry of new, exciting cards, with one of the foremost being the reveal of T'Challa, the Black Panther as the face of the Wakanda Forever deck, the first artifact-themed Selesnya () Commander precon.

T'Challa, the Black Panther

Selesnya rarely dabbles in artifacts as the color pair tends to care about creatures, tokens, and counters; green in particular has extremely sparse artifact support. But this iteration of T’Challa could change that, so let’s look at artifacts worth considering for this hero that merges artifacts with +1/+1 counters.

The Great Henge

The Great Henge

The Great Henge might be a little generic here as it’s generally one green’s best cards in Commander, but it has a fair bit of synergy with T’Challa. It’s an expensive artifact to trigger the counters ability, but it rarely costs more than 4, then you get an artifact spreading +1/+1 counters around for other synergies, not to mention excellent card draw. The Great Henge is always good, but here it’s exceptional.

Agatha’s Soul Cauldron

Agatha's Soul Cauldron

Agatha's Soul Cauldron ticks both the artifact and counters box with a sprinkle of synergy. T’Challa’s mana production encourages players to use activated abilities on cards like Walking Ballista (another must-play!), so having ASC to double down on that synergy feels good.

Filigree Vector

Filigree Vector

Filigree Vector works with +1/+1 counters and uses T’Challa’s Vibranium tokens quite differently than other cards: it sees them as a constant source of sacrifice fodder to fuel the proliferate ability. This isn’t the card for builds that go wide with artifacts, but it’s worth considering if you really want to hone in on counters.

Idol of Oblivion

Idol of Oblivion

It’s hard to exclude Idol of Oblivion with a commander that makes tokens each turn. 2-mana to draw a card every turn, or even just most turns, is super strong. I also love how it curves into T’Challa: If you miss on a 1-mana accelerant, you can play Idol on turn 2 and immediately draw a card after T’Challa enters.

The Ozolith, Shattered Spire

Ozolith, the Shattered Spire

Ozolith, the Shattered Spire fleshes out the pool of artifact and +1/+1 counter cards. The activated ability provides a mana sink while the counter doubler makes T’Challa more threatening. While I wouldn’t expect it to be the star, The Ozolith does quite a lot for a mere .

Patrolling Peacemaker

Patrolling Peacemaker

Assuming you focus on T’Challa’s +1/+1 counters, Patrolling Peacemaker is a fantastic proliferate card. Your opponents are constantly committing crimes, and they might even target spells and permanents controlled by other players.

Dyadrine, Synthesis Amalgam

Dyadrine, Synthesis Amalgam

T’Challa gets lots of +1/+1 counters and it’s presumably not the only card in your deck that cares about them. If that’s the case, Dyadrine, Synthesis Amalgam gives you a tool to make your board even wider as it removes +1/+1 counters and converts them into Robot tokens—crucially, artifact tokens. It’s great for a deck that wants a massive board of artifacts for cards like Bronze Guardian.

Karn, Legacy Reforged

Karn, Legacy Reforged

T’Challa doesn’t just want artifacts, it wants big artifacts to trigger its second ability. Karn, Legacy Reforged fits this perfectly: it’s expensive enough to trigger T’Challa while ramping you to cast ever-bigger spells. The Karnstruct power/toughness also makes it a formidable threat in its own right.

Stridehangar Automaton

Stridehangar Automaton

If you deck wants one artifact token, it’s rarely unhappy with two, which makes Stridehangar Automaton an intriguing choice. You’d need to be a very aggressive T’Challa deck to make it work, but I imagine players who put this in the command zone want to get into combat. Make enough Thopters and other artifact creatures and Gruesome Slaughter could be on the table….

Giggling Skitterspike

Giggling Skitterspike

Giggling Skitterspike works with T’Challa in a few ways: It’s a big artifact to trigger the second ability and it has an expensive monstrous ability to sink some of that Vibranium mana into (and maybe capitalize on an Agatha's Soul Cauldron). It also benefits handsomely from any other counter distribution or payoffs you add to the deck.
