Our first year enrolled at Strixhaven: School of Mages taught us the fundamentals of spellcasting with the magecraft mechanic, but we’re smarter and have a better grasp going into the next year, so Secrets of Strixhaven has increased the course load with college-specific mechanics.
Repartee is the mechanic for aspiring Silverquill () students who want their words to sting just as badly as a Prismari () mage’s fire magic. It draws on a subtheme from the OG Strixhaven to give the second round of Silverquill cards a more distinct identity.
How Does Repartee Work?

Eager Glyphmage | Illustration by Cristi Balanescu
Repartee is a triggered ability that triggers whenever you cast an instant or sorcery that targets a creature. If you cast a spell like an aura that targets a creature or use an activated or triggered ability to target a creature, it won’t trigger. If you cast an instant or sorcery that doesn’t target a creature, it still won’t trigger; this isn’t magecraft.
While all repartee abilities have the same trigger condition, they don’t share effects.
The History of Repartee in MTG
Repartee was first introduced in Magic with Secrets of Strixhaven in April 2026 as a mechanic aligned with the white-black Silverquill school. It acts as a partial replacement for the magecraft mechanic alongside opus, increment, and infusion; it expresses more about Silverquill’s “thing” (witty duels) than magecraft while remaining simple.
Does Repartee Trigger If I Target an Opponent’s Creature?
Yes! Repartee only cares about whether you target a creature, not who controls it. One of the most exciting interactions is to add additional effects to your removal spells with cards like Conciliator's Duelist and Graduation Day.
Does Repartee Trigger Multiple Times with Multiple Targets?
No. Repartee only triggers once, even if you cast a spell with multiple targets. That said, one spell can trigger the repartee abilities of multiple permanents, and you get to choose the order in which they resolve.
Does Removing the Creature Counter Repartee?
No. As written, repartee only cares that you targeted the original creature. The other creature can die, and the original spell doesn’t even need to resolve. Even removing the permanent with the repartee ability doesn’t counter the ability itself.
The only exception is a repartee ability that targets a creature. If, for example, you trigger Conciliator's Duelist’s repartee ability and target a creature, removing that target would counter the Duelist’s ability—but it’s important to note that doesn’t involve the repartee creature or the creature that you target with the original instant or sorcery.
Do Auras Trigger Repartee?
No. Repartee specifies that only instants and sorceries trigger it. Auras don’t count.
Repartee vs. Heroic
While repartee and heroic are similar at a glance, the two mechanics diverge in the details.
Firstly, heroic only triggers when you target the creature with heroic while repartee can trigger when you target any creature (and it’s worded in such a way that it isn’t restricted to only creatures). For example, an Akroan Crusader’s heroic ability only triggers if you target that creature with the spell, while Informed Inkwright triggers whenever you target any creature.
Another important distinction is that heroic isn’t restricted by card type while repartee is. That Crusader doesn’t care whether you target it with an instant or sorcery or even an aura while repartee only works with instants and sorceries.
Because both mechanics have slight restrictions and differences, it’s hard to really call one or the other “better”. They’re just variations on a similar mechanical idea.
What Does the Word Repartee Mean?
A repartee is a witty remark or reply. It’s the perfect name for a Silverquill mechanic as the school is founded on use of witty language and clever turns of speech; Silverquill mages make their inklings with the magical aftereffects of insults, after all.

Best Repartee Cards
Conciliator’s Duelist
Conciliator's Duelist will be an excellent value engine in blink decks. You could make your Ephemerate flicker two creatures or tack extra value to a random Swords to Plowshares. The enters ability makes it the complete package as a flicker enabler and a fine flicker target.
Graduation Day
Graduation Day has no impact on the board alone, which cards are often criticized for, but that’s more acceptable when it only costs 1 mana. This could be a great, cheap source of +1/+1 counters.
Informed Inkwright
Informed Inkwright has a wonderful token-making ability. There’s no limit on the number of times repartee triggers in a turn, so you could make a pretty wide board extremely quickly.
Wrap Up

Repartee is a perfect fit for the Silverquill school. It’s also an interesting spell mechanic since it’s flavor-neutral enough that it could reappear without the need to associate it with Silverquill, which makes it easier to imagine repartee in a future set.
