Reptil, Dinomorpher | Illustration by Paolo Parente

Marvelโ€™s Spider-Man introduced heroes and villains for future Marvel sets to expand upon, but those arenโ€™t the only creature types to receive serious typal support in Marvel Super Heroes. Several other types received support and lords that make your creature type of choice stronger, faster, or more resilient. Iโ€™ve rounded up all the non-hero, non-villain typal support cards in the set!

Dinosaur

Devil Dinosaur

Devil Dinosaur

Devil Dinosaur is a support card the dinosaur players will love. Hexproof to all other dinosaurs makes it hard for your opponents to remove dinosaur commanders like Pantlaza.

Moon-Boy, Dino Rider

Moon-Boy, Dino Rider

Moon-Boy, Dino Rider isnโ€™t unique as a dinosaur cost reducer, but the archetype welcomes the redundancy.

Gamma

Hulkโ€™s Thunderclap

Hulk's Thunderclap

Hulk's Thunderclap is a cute removal spell for decks with a Hulk in the command zone (probably The Incredible Hulk); there isnโ€™t much else to say until we get more gamma.

Hulk, Strongest There Is

Hulk, Strongest There Is

Hulk, Strongest There Is synergiizes with the primary mechanical identity of gamma creatures: they all gain +1/+1 counters. Perhaps thereโ€™s a janky +1/+1 counter deck using it and Arcane Adaptionโ€ฆ.

Illusion

Living Lies of Loki

Living Lies of Loki

I wouldnโ€™t have called illusion support in MSC, but here we are! Living Lies of Loki is a power-crept riff on 1/3s that die and cantrip since it becomes much larger than a 1/3. Perhaps it gets a gig with Minn, Wily Illusionist?

Merfolk

Attuma, Atlantean Warlord

Attuma, Atlantean Warlord

Attuma, Atlantean Warlord is a promising lord that scales excellently in Commander; if you have the merfolk to attack multiple players, you can draw multiple cards, up to three each combat.

Daughter of the Deep

Daughter of the Deep

Daughter of the Deep is the least impressive merfolk lord, though it has direct synergy with Morska, Undersea Sleuth. The abilities are rather small for Commander.

Namor, Scourge of the Sea

Namor, Scourge of the Seas

Namor, Scourge of the Seas is probably the best merfolk card in the set, if only because it goes so well with the best merfolk commander, Hakbal of the Surging Soul. What often works out to team-wide evasion plus conniving every turn is a fierce spell, even if itโ€™s costly.

Namor the Sub-Mariner

Namor the Sub-Mariner

Namor the Sub-Mariner has the most potential as a merfolk commander. It doesnโ€™t look strong enough to usurp Hakbal, but Iโ€™d call it one of the stronger mono-blue merfolk commanders due to its immense token generation, which takes advantage of all the blue merfolk lords.

Mutant

Black Tom Cassidy

Black Tom Cassidy

Mutants donโ€™t currently mesh with lifegain, but that could change. Even if the typal effect feels like flavor text, donโ€™t sleep on Black Tom Cassidyโ€”an on-type mana dork helps reach a critical mass of your type and often has surprise synergies; what if Wizards prints โ€œuntap all mutantsโ€ with the X-Men?

Colossus, Steel Stalwart

Colossus, Steel Stalwart

Colossus, Steel Stalwart is a true mutant lord with its anthem. Unfortunately, it has the cost of a Limited card, so I doubt becomes a big player.

Wolverine, Claws Out

Wolverine, Claws Out

Wolverine, Claws Out is far more convincing as a mutant lord with its nasty power-doubling ability. I shiver to think of The Wise Mothman attacking me with Logan around.

X-23, Deadly Weapon

X-23, Deadly Weapon

Mutants and +1/+1 counters often work together, so I expect X-23, Deadly Weapon to see a decent amount of play. It already synergies with The Wise Mothman, currently the most mutant commander, and can only age well.

Robot

Vision, Spectral Synthezoid

Vision, Spectral Synthezoid

Vision, Spectral Synthezoid would be terrifying if robots were better. Some of the Transformers cards are cool, and Krang, Ultrom Warlord is quite impressive, but robots arenโ€™t quite there as a type yet. Once they are, thoughโ€ฆ.

Soldier

The Howling Commandos

The Howling Commandos

The Howling Commandos suck. This isnโ€™t even a Limited card; itโ€™s a Jumpstart card.

Spider

Lady Spider, Maybelle Reilly

Lady Spider, Maybelle Reilly

Lady Spider, Maybelle Reilly is bafflingly bad. Spiders and discard have ample support but nearly no overlap; I canโ€™t imagine anybody playing this.

Squirrel

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

Squirrels only got one card but it might be the best of the bunch. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is well on the way to becoming one of the most popular commanders from MSH. But while itโ€™s getting commander buzz, it works just as well in the 99 of squirrel commanders like Chatterfang, Squirrel General and Hazel of the Rootbloom.
