The Marvel Super Heroes set is now fully revealed, but it seems like something is missing. While I don't think anyone is disappointed with what we're getting, there is a huge glaring omission in the line up of heroes and villains from Marvel lore: The X-men. Of all the cards in the main set, Commander, and Jumpstart, there are only a small handful of characters representing what is arguably the biggest thing besides The Avengers. So what happened? Was this an oversight, or is it a clue that we might be getting another Marvel set down the road?

So what did we get in terms of X-men? Wolverine, Fierce Fighter, Storm, Windrider, and Beast, Erudite Aerialist. That's it for the main set. In Jumpstart we also got X-23, Deadly Weapon and Colossus, Steel Stalwart. You could also make an argument for Quicksilver, Brash Blur and The Scarlet Witch but they're just as much Avengers as they are X-men. That's it as far as X-men are concerned. In a way, it's a testament to the breadth of Marvel as a property that they can make such a large set with so many characters without even including one of the biggest and most iconic chunks of characters.

However, people were expecting for this set to at least include the more well known characters from X-men: Professor Xavier, Magneto, Cyclops, Jean Grey, etc. Other characters showed up on multiple cards, and so it's hard to believe there wasn't room. It's left a lot of players with the same conclusion: There will be a dedicated X-men set in the future.

Days of Future's Sets

Aside from people wanting it to be true, there is a strong case for an X-men set happening in the future. Firstly, there's precedent. Marvel Super Heroes is not even the first Marvel set we've gotten, lest we forget the amazingly disappointing Spiderman set that came out last year. Additionally, we're going to be getting The Hobbit later this year, which follows Lord of the Rings from a few years ago, one of the first big Universes Beyond sets, and a very popular one at that. When dealing with big properties like these, if there is enough material to stretch across multiple sets, and if the demand is there, then it's a fairly easy decision for Wizards of the Coast to make to create another set.

The interesting thing about Marvel is the sheer amount of characters and stories to draw on lends itself to more than one set. Aside from X-men, players have also theorized about a potential Guardians of the Galaxy/broader Marvel space set, as these characters were also under-represented in the set, and there is certainly enough material there to support something on its own.

Multiverses Beyond

While hype seems high and opinions seem positive for Marvel Super Heroes, I doubt anyone ten years ago imagined that we'd be getting a Marvel set, let alone three. If this does come to pass, and it seems more likely than not, then it's a bit worrying for the future of Magic. The worry comes not because this will be bad for the success of the game, but rather it contributes to the changing identity of the game. We've now had three Universes Beyond sets that are set in New York City.ย

This year, four out of seven sets will not be Magic's IP. When the number of properties outside of Magic made begins exceeding Magic's own original output, it starts to feel hollow in a way. Or at least, that's how I feel. I know many players don't feel this way, and I know many players feel even more strongly on the topic. At any rate, if this direction for Magic with multiple Marvel sets is true, then it is a big departure from what we've seen before. Good or bad, it remains to be seen, but it's likely a bit of both.
