While many commanders in Magic: The Gathering are known for powerful “enter the battlefield” abilities like Etali, Primal Conqueror, there’s a special subset of legendary creatures that focus on something different: activated abilities.

Today, I cover some of the best commanders that make brilliant use of activated abilities, discuss their strengths, weaknesses, and what makes each one unique to help inspire your next deck.

Curious about who made the list? Let’s dive in!

What Are Activated Ability Commanders in MTG?

Activated ability commanders are legendary creatures designed to excel when paired with other permanents with strong activated abilities. Unlike options like Cromat or Kenrith, the Returned King which come packed with multiple activated abilities themselves, these commanders typically “exploit” activated abilities found on other cards, often aiming to copy or steal them rather than having many of their own. In fact, some of the best commanders in this category don’t have any significant abilities themselves but instead shine by leveraging other permanents’ abilities.

This list focuses specifically on commanders that directly synergize with activated abilities, excluding those that have random abilities without adding meaningful synergy to the theme.

#19. Dynaheir, Invoker Adept

Dynaheir, Invoker Adept

The text is a bit on the nose, but Dynaheir, Invoker Adept supports all kinds of activated abilities. You get a pseudo-haste ability for tappers, and you can copy expensive activated abilities that cost mana to use. The “Invoker” name seems to signal playing invoker creatures like Bhaal's Invoker or Tymora's Invoker, but you can usually find better versions of cards like that.

#18. Ashnod the Uncaring

Ashnod the Uncaring

Ashnod the Uncaring, ironically, cares about activated abilities that require sacrificing a permanent as a cost. This lets you double up on artifact tokens like Clues and Food, double up on ramp form Wayfarer's Bauble, and get double mileage out of aristocrats like Marionette Apprentice and Marionette Master.

#17. The Peregrine Dynamo

The Peregrine Dynamo

The Peregrine Dynamo has one job and does it excellently. For just 1 mana, it can copy activated or triggered abilities from other legendary sources. While it may not work 100% as expected if you run it as your commander, it’s a good support card for others in this theme.

#16. Marvin, Murderous Mimic

Marvin, Murderous Mimic

While you may not want to run Marvin, Murderous Mimic primarily as your commander thanks to its colorless identity, it's there for when you need to combo your opponents with the likes of Pili-Pala and Palladium Myr. This is just an example of one infinite combo involving Marvin, but it's just a matter of getting creative with the toy despite its limited scope.

#15. Koh, the Face Stealer

Koh, the Face Stealer

Koh, the Face Stealer is pricy, and the abilities reflect its power. The minimal cost to choose any creature that got killed is terrifying. When you steal your opponent's favorite ability, see if you can catch your their emotional reaction.

#14. Mutagen Man, Living Ooze

Mutagen Man, Living Ooze

Mutagen Man, Living Ooze is a great cost reducer that makes Food easier to eat, blood free to use, and chops clues down to ! You don't need to spend all the mutagen tokens in one place, but it's hard not to with this ooze.

#13. Adric, Mathematical Genius

Adric, Mathematical Genius

While Adric, Mathematical Genius is an excellent activated ability commander on its own, it acts as an ultimate support card for decks around this theme thanks to its doctor’s companion ability that can be used to add a new color to Commander strategies. Outside of that, it's a useful creature to copy and double activated abilities or stifle ones that may disrupt your plans.

#12. Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice

Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice

Unlike other commanders that can copy activated or triggered abilities, Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice limits itself to copying only your artifacts’ abilities. This narrowness is compensated for by its cheap mana value and Tawnos’s haste ability, making it a perfect support for artifact-themed decks, especially alongside cards like Sands of Time.

#11. Idris, Soul of the TARDIS

Idris, Soul of the TARDIS

Don’t be surprised if you find that many of these commanders have surprising synergy with artifacts, and that more often than not, they’re used to produce infinite mana. Idris, Soul of the TARDIS lets you do this with Basalt Monolith and Heartstone, but there’s a lot of fun (for you) if you throw Mindslaver into the mix.

#10. Rex, Cyber-Hound

Rex, Cyber-Hound

You’ll also find that some commanders like stealing activated abilities from cards in the graveyard. Rex, Cyber-Hound needs you to exile a card from a graveyard to start adding the new “upgrades” to this canine commander. The trick here is that unlike others, it doesn’t rely only on your graveyard: It can steal abilities from your opponents' creatures and also act as a pseudo graveyard hate commander that has an energy synergy theme to it.

#9. Sam, Loyal Attendant

Sam, Loyal Attendant

A fellow from the Shire, Sam, Loyal Attendant is a halfling creature that directly synergizes with Food strategies, making your Foods’ activated abilities cost 1 less mana to activate, which can lead to good lifegain subthemes.

If you’re really creative, there's a 5-card combo with it that can basically win you the game on the spot: Peregrin Took + Treebeard, Gracious Host + Scurry Oak + Prize Pig + Sam, Loyal Attendant. That said, if you require five cards on the field, this combo better win you the game no matter what!

#8. Professor Hojo

Professor Hojo

Professor Hojo experiments with a control group of less for an activation, and the consistent card draw sees pingers and has no problem getting lots of cards out of it.

#7. Gogo, Master of Mimicry

Gogo, Master of Mimicry

Gogo, Master of Mimicry fires up the copy machine copies cost just more each. Though restricted to blue, it expands to include triggered abilities too, so cards like Waterbending Scroll, Arcanis the Omnipotent and Dreamscape Artist are exceptional.

#6. Experiment Kraj

Experiment Kraj

+1/+1 counters are a fan favorite for many players, and you can easily end up adding activated abilities onto Experiment Kraj as you add +1/+1 counters to creatures. On top of that, just by tapping this beautiful monster, you can start spreading counters to other creatures without the help of any card.

#5. Agatha of the Vile Cauldron

Agatha of the Vile Cauldron

I like Agatha of the Vile Cauldron for multiple reasons. It’s a cheap commander who can hit the battlefield early in the game, and it helps reduce the cost of activated based on its power. If you pair this with counter mechanics or ways to pump it like equipment, you can considerably reduce the costs of these abilities with little or no effort.

In addition, Agatha has a strong activated ability to act as a game finisher when used multiple times.

#4. Tazri, Stalwart Survivor

Tazri, Stalwart Survivor

Tazri, Stalwart Survivor is the 5-color commander you’re building the activated abilities theme around. Its static ability turns all your creatures with activated abilities into mana dorks, although you can only spend that mana on activated abilities.

I know this is a mouthful, but it'll become easy in practice if all your creatures have this ability on it already.

On top of that, you can spend 5 mana to pseudo-tutor for more creatures with activated abilities by milling the top five cards from your library.

#3. Zirda, the Dawnwaker

Zirda, the Dawnwaker

Originally, Zirda, the Dawnwaker was introduced in Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and used in cycling decks, a theme that became prevalent in Standard when the set was legal.

From there, you can choose to either run it as a commander, or my favorite, as a companion to make sure you always have access to your linchpin card.

#2. Mairsil, the Pretender

Mairsil, the Pretender

Mairsil, the Pretender allows you to run more than two colors unlike other commanders from the list. More importantly, Mairsil is in Grixis () colors, giving you access to the best tutors ever printed in the game like Demonic Tutor or Vampiric Tutor to search for broken win conditions like Thassa's Oracle. Of course, those cards have nothing to do with activated abilities themes, or at least that's what you’d think right before adding Mirror-Mad Phantasm into the mix.

#1. Trazyn the Infinite

Trazyn the Infinite

Trazyn the Infinite is broken, especially if you can throw artifacts into the graveyard on purpose, as it gains all their activated abilities.

If you manage to put Staff of Domination and Sol Ring in the bin, you get infinite mana that you can use later to activate all other abilities Trazyn gains thanks to the Staff, including but not limited to drawing your whole deck.

This is the easiest combo you can run, but get creative and you’ll get different results. Another “fun” one to run is Phyrexian Devourer and Walking Ballista, which is easier to pull off thanks to cards like Buried Alive.

Best Activated Ability Commander Payoffs and Synergies

Many cards have direct synergy that can act as support for this kind of strategy, but they ultimately depend on what your commander does.

Squad Rallier

For example, Zirda, the Dawnwaker reduces the amount of mana it costs to activate abilities, and creatures with pricy ones like Squad Rallier become must-have additions to the decks and act as a payoff for them.

Marath, Will of the Wild is another cool option to run as you can aim to meaningfully reduce the cost of its activated ability when paired with other cards from this list. Or why not use this beast commander as a blueprint and access its ability when it goes to the graveyard?

On the other hand, if you’re looking to add support cards for the strategy as a whole, cards like Training Grounds and Agatha's Soul Cauldron are must-haves.

Ensure you have activated abilities to play with and ways to copy abilities to make the most of them with cards like Peter Parker's Camera, Return the Favor, and Steward of the Harvest.

Commanding Conclusion

As you can see, commanders focused on activated abilities work very differently from those with powerful “enter the battlefield” effects. Their impact isn’t immediate but rather builds over time, and more often than not, they lead to combos with other permanent types, such as artifacts.

I hope you enjoyed this list as much as I enjoyed the research for it, and if there are any activated ability commanders that I completely overlooked, let me know in the comments!
