The Final Fantasy set is coming in a rush to Standard, and fans couldnโt be more excited. This crossover brings with it some of the most beloved characters in gaming history, each reimagined through the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. And leading the charge is none other than Vivi Ornitier, the fan-favorite black mage from Final Fantasy IX, making a powerful entrance into the world of cEDH.
While the set offers something for everyone, Vivi has ignited interest in competitive Commander circles. Its spell-slinging synergy, built-in burn, and scalable mana generation make Vivi a standout option for high-powered tables. Letโs break down what makes Vivi such a compelling commander, and of course, a deck to showcase its power level in cEDH.
Letโs dive right into it.

This is a high-powered, spellslinging combo deck built for cEDH, centered around Vivi Ornitier. With its ability to grow from every non-creature spell and convert its power into mana, Vivi acts as both an engine and a win condition. The deck blends classic Izzet () storm lines with Breach loops and card draw combos to win in one explosive turn.
The Commander: Vivi Ornitier
Vivi Ornitier is a deceptively powerful Izzet commander that rewards you for doing exactly what spellslinging decks want to do: cast a bunch of non-creature spells. Every time you do, Vivi not only pings each opponent but also grows in power, and that matters because its activated ability converts its power into blue and red mana once per turn. Every spell you cast makes your commander stronger, which in turn ramps you even harder on your next main phase.
In cEDH, where efficiency and explosiveness matter most, this kind of built-in value loop is massive. Vivi essentially becomes a self-scaling mana battery, especially when paired with wheels, cantrips, and rituals.
That said, unlike many commanders that only function as combo enablers or value engines, Vivi does both, and it enables mana-positive turns that feel closer to Dockside Extortionist than your average 3-drop. That kind of consistency and utility is exactly what you want in a cEDH commander.
The Creatures
To amplify Vivi's potential, the deck runs a handful of synergy pieces like Harmonic Prodigy, Storm-Kiln Artist, and Birgi, God of Storytelling. These all generate additional value to help storm off, whether itโs double triggers, Treasure tokens, or free mana.
For draw-based combos, youโve got Tandem Lookout, Curiosity, Ophidian Eye, and both combo versions of Niv-Mizzet. These set up loops where each ping draws you cards, which in turn deals more damage.
Utility creatures round things out. Spellseeker fetches key spells, Kitsa, Otterball Elite loots and copies spells, and Pinnacle Monk brings back instants or sorceries from your graveyard. Spellskite offers protection, and Hullbreaker Horror serves as a late-game lock piece that bounces away threats, enables certain combos, or just ends the game outright.
The Interaction
This deck plays nearly every free counterspell available in cEDH: Force of Will, Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, and Pact of Negation. They protect your combo turn or counter game-ending threats without needing mana up.
You also run efficient 1-mana options like Swan Song, Flusterstorm, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, and Mental Misstep, so itโs easy to win stack wars and check greedy opponents.
As far as removal goes, youโve got Pongify, Into the Flood Maw, and Cyclonic Rift to deal with creatures or clear the board. Deflecting Swat also acts as protection, redirecting key spells to keep your lines safe.
Win Condition
Youโve got three primary ways to win:
- Mill Loop: Underworld Breach + Brain Freeze + fast mana lets you loop your deck and mill everyone out. Itโs clean and brutal.
- Draw Loops: Pair Vivi Ornitier or either Niv-Mizzet with Curiosity, Ophidian Eye, or Tandem Lookout. Once online, every point of damage becomes card draw, which becomes more damageโrinse and repeat until the tableโs gone.
- Storm Kill: Load up with mana from Jeska's Will or a big Wheel of Fortune, cast tons of spells to grow Vivi, then burn the table with a lethal storm turn or mana-fueled finale.
The Mana Base
Your land base is tuned for speed and consistency, with fetch lands like Scalding Tarn, Polluted Delta, Misty Rainforest, and Prismatic Vista ensuring perfect mana every game. Duals and shocksโVolcanic Island, Steam Vents, Thundering Fallsโback that up.
Thereโs also a utility package: Gemstone Caverns helps with turn-1 acceleration if youโre on the draw, while Otawara, Soaring City and Mistrise Village offer interaction and combo protection out of the land slot.
For mana rocks, the deck leans on the best: Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone, Talisman of Creativity, Chrome Mox, Mox Opal, Mox Amber, Mox Diamond, and Lion's Eye Diamond. These cards ensure that you can go off early and fast.
The Strategy
Your early game focus is on acceleration and setup. Look for opening hands with cheap mana rocks like Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, or Mox Amber, alongside a source of card selection like Brainstorm or Gitaxian Probe. Getting Vivi Ornitier out earlyโideally by turn 2โis a big priority, as your commander is both your value engine and your ramp once it starts to grow.
Once Vivi hits the board, start to layer value with spells that cantrip or generate mana. Cards like Strike It Rich, Jeska's Will, and Rhystic Study build momentum and set you up for a big storm turn.
Of course, you need to hold up protection like Force of Will or Deflecting Swatโeven one misstep in cEDH can cost you the game.
Mid-game, youโre looking to assemble a combo line. That could mean setting up Underworld Breach with Brain Freeze and Lion's Eye Diamond, finding a loop with Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter, or resolving Curiosity on Vivi to draw multiple cards per turn. Protect your engine pieces, and donโt pull the trigger unless youโre confident you can push through counterspells.
If the game drags on, your late game plan revolves around explosive turns fueled by cards like Wheel of Fortune or Niv-Mizzet, Parun. You can grind, but ideally youโre ending the game before turn 5.
Combos and Interactions
The primary combo lines revolve around Underworld Breach and Brain Freeze. With Lion's Eye Diamond or Lotus Petal, you generate infinite mana and cast Brain Freeze over and over, milling yourself and your opponents.
Thereโs also the classic Isochron Scepter plus Dramatic Reversal combo, which is especially lethal with mana rocks like Sol Ring, Grim Monolith, and Mox Opal to create infinite mana.
Youโve got a full playset of Curiosity-style winconsโCuriosity, Ophidian Eye, and Tandem Lookoutโwhich go infinite with Niv-Mizzet, Parun, drawing your deck and pinging the table to death.
Storm support includes Jeska's Will, Strike It Rich, Gitaxian Probe, Brainstorm, and Lightning Bolt, all low-cost spells that either draw, ramp, or trigger storm lines. Wheel of Fortune and Timetwister reload your hand or set up graveyard loops with Breach.
Budget Options
Letโs be real: This deck, like many cEDH lists, isnโt cheap. Cards like Lion's Eye Diamond, Timetwister, and the moxen can burn a hole in your wallet. But the shell is flexible enough that you can still build a powerful version on a tighter budget.
For fast mana, you can swap Mox Diamond and Chrome Mox for cards like Jeweled Amulet, Coldsteel Heart, or even Izzet Signet if you're prioritizing colored sources.
You can replace Timetwister with Windfall, which still feeds your graveyard for Breach loops while digging for gas. Instead of Wheel of Fortune, try Wheel of Misfortune or Echo of Eonsโthe latter even synergizes well with Lion's Eye Diamond if youโre keeping that piece.
You can also skip out on duals like Volcanic Island and run basics or cheaper lands like Shivan Reef, Spirebluff Canal, or Training Center. The deck might slow down by a half turn, but the core game plan remains fully intact.
Other Builds
This list goes all-in on cEDH-level storm and combo lines, but Vivi Ornitier has range. If youโre not into pure storm, you could pivot into a curiosity-control shell, running more counterspells, wheels, and card draw enchantments, and you can include other creatures like Thermo-Alchemist to grind value while slowly burning the table down.
You could also lean harder into artifact storm, using cards like Aetherflux Reservoir to create alternate win lines through storm loops and lifegain. Pair that with bounce spells like Retraction Helix and youโve got a loop-based deck with a different win condition.
And for those who like spice, you could even explore a prowess aggro-storm variant with cards like Sprite Dragon, Monastery Swiftspear, and more creatures that benefit from spell flurries. Vivi still grows and pings, but now youโve got a wide board threatening combat as well, which seems like the go-to for Duel Commander builds.
Commanding Conclusion

Vivi has all that it takes to get overpoweredโwhether itโs pinging your opponents for card advantage or enabling heavy mana pools with just a few +1/+1 counters. This commander plays beautifully with classic Izzet staples while offering a fresh engine to build around, so itโs a perfect fit for competitive Commander players who love storm turns, puzzle-piece combos, and explosive finishes.
