Legends-matter commanders are legendary creatures that specifically care about legendary spells, creatures, or permanents. They're perfect for building decks full of iconic characters from Magic’s history, as well as from pop culture franchises that Wizards of the Coast has partnered with in recent years—like Final Fantasy. This list ranks these commanders based on how much synergy they offer and how powerful their effects are once they hit the battlefield.
#46. The Peregrine Dynamo
The Peregrine Dynamo is a quirky support commander that copies activated or triggered abilities from other non-commander legends, letting you double up on all kinds of juicy abilities. While running it as your commander limits your legendary options, you can still copy powerful abilities from legends like Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre.
#45. K-9, Mark I
Small but mighty, K-9, Mark I is a great defensive piece in any legendary deck. While untapped, it gives your other legends ward , making them tougher to remove. For just , it makes a legendary creature unblockable—perfect for triggering combat abilities from cards like Curie, Emergent Intelligence or Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar. Plus, as a doctor’s companion, K-9 can partner up with any Doctor commander for additional flexibility.
#44. Thancred Waters
Thancred Waters is the kind of commander who always has your back—literally. Thanks to flash and its ability to protect another legendary permanent with indestructible, Thancred’s perfect for keeping your most important pieces safe from removal. Once it’s out, casting noncreature spells turns it into an indestructible blocker or attacker, making it a sneaky control piece.
#43. Reki, the History of Kamigawa
If you like drawing cards just for casting your commander friends, Reki, the History of Kamigawa keeps things flowing. Every legendary spell you cast gives you a card, which makes it amazing in green-heavy builds full of legendary creatures and legendary enchantments. It shines alongside legends like Multani, Yavimaya's Avatar and Nissa, Vastwood Seer, giving you both threats and gas in the same turn.
#42. Venat, Heart of Hydaelyn / Hydaelyn, the Mothercrystal

With Venat, Heart of Hydaelyn, every legendary spell you cast becomes a cantrip, which keeps your hand full and your game plan rolling. Once you transform it into Hydaelyn, the Mothercrystal, things get even better—indestructibility and combat buffs help your legends stay strong and hit harder.
This makes Venat a great Commander for a white-based legends-matter deck full of cheap iconic creatures like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben or Isamaru, Hound of Konda.
#41. Merry, Esquire of Rohan
Merry, Esquire of Rohan brings speed and card draw to the table as a 2-drop legend that rewards you for going to battle with other legends. It gets even better when equipped, so toss in gear like Sword of the Animist or Sword of Feast and Famine to give Merry first strike and a serious threat level.
#40. Nashi, Moon's Legacy
If you’re into casting spells from your graveyard, Nashi, Moon's Legacy is your sneaky, rat-themed commander of choice. Every time it attacks, you can copy and cast a legendary card or another rat from your graveyard, which can lead to some explosive plays and recur your dead allies.
#19. Rona, Herald of Invasion / Rona, Tolarian Obliterator
As a looting engine that untaps with every legendary spell you cast, Rona, Herald of Invasion helps you dig for answers or fuel graveyard strategies fast. If you have the mana, transforming it into Rona, Tolarian Obliterator turns it into a punisher that steals cards or lands from anyone that damages it. Rona fits well in blue-black legendary builds—and in Pioneer, it's a key combo piece thanks to the combo with Mox Amber and Retraction Helix.
#38. Niambi, Esteemed Speaker
Niambi, Esteemed Speaker quietly does everything right. It has flash, which means you can drop it at the perfect time, saving one of your creatures from removal while also gaining a chunk of life. But Niambi really shines with its activated ability, turning legendary cards in hand into two fresh draws. That makes it a solid choice for a value-oriented control deck filled with legendary creatures you don’t mind pitching for card advantage.
#37. Gríma Wormtongue
Gríma Wormtongue shuts down lifegain for your opponents right away, which already puts a damper on a lot of popular strategies. But the real power comes from its ability to sacrifice creatures—especially legendary ones—for life drain and amass value. If you're running a deck full of legendary creatures that want to die anyway, Gríma becomes a sneaky engine that drains opponents and grows an Orc Army while doing it.
#36. Gimli of the Glittering Caves
Don’t let the 1/1 body fool you: Gimli of the Glittering Caves gets out of hand fast. With double strike and a +1/+1 counter every time another legendary creature enters your battlefield, it quickly scales into a major threat. On top of that, Gimli makes a Treasure whenever it deals combat damage, giving you both pressure and ramp in a deck packed with cheap legends.
#35. Shaun, Father of Synths
Shaun, Father of Synths puts a flashy spin on legendary combat by turning your attackers into temporary clones. Whenever you attack, you create a tapped and attacking Synth copy of another legendary creature—except it’s not legendary, so you can dodge the legend rule. It’s a great way to double up on abilities from cards like Gimli of the Glittering Caves. Just remember that if Shaun leaves the battlefield, all those Synths go with it, so keeping it safe is a must.
#34. Serah Farron / Crystallized Serah
Serah Farron reduces the cost of your first legendary creature each turn by 2 mana, which is huge for tempo. Once you transform it into Crystallized Serah, that discount sticks around, and all your legends get +2/+2, turning your board into a buffed-up legendary army.
#33. Shanid, Sleepers' Scourge
Constant card draw and built-in evasion makes Shanid, Sleepers' Scourge a powerhouse in any Mardu legends deck. Drawing a card and losing 1 life every time you cast a legendary spell or play a legendary land keeps your hand full and your momentum strong. Add menace to all your legends, and suddenly your team becomes much harder to block. It pairs perfectly with aggressive legends like Zurgo Bellstriker and Queen Marchesa.
#32. Aerith Gainsborough
Aerith Gainsborough rewards you for gaining life by growing bigger and eventually passing that growth onto your whole legendary team when it dies. If you’re playing a white-based lifegain deck full of legends, Aerith’s your heart and soul.
#31. Ardbert, Warrior of Darkness
Ardbert, Warrior of Darkness encourages you to cast white and black spells by handing out +1/+1 counters and useful combat keywords like vigilance and menace to your whole legendary squad. It plays best in a low-curve deck with lots of small legends like Tymna the Weaver or payoffs like General's Enforcer, building up a strong battlefield presence turn after turn.
#30. Arvad the Cursed
Sometimes, simple is best, and Arvad the Cursed is a textbook example. It’s a 3/3 with lifelink and deathtouch, but more importantly, it gives your other legendary creatures +2/+2. That’s a massive boost for any legends-matter build, especially in black-white decks that focus on value creatures.
#29. Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh
Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh adds a political edge to your legendary deck. It spreads +1/+1 counters around your other legends or those your opponents control, but if one of those buffed-up creatures dies, you draw cards equal to the number of counters it had, though at the cost of 2 life per card. With strong sacrifice outlets like Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Cleopatra can build and cash in value in its own fashion.
#28. Colonel Autumn
Colonel Autumn brings a unique twist with exploit, not something you normally see in legendary-themed decks. When it enters, it can exploit a creature, and it grants that ability to all your other legendary creatures, which is wild.
Every time you exploit a creature, your whole board gets +1/+1 counters, so the payoff is real. Toss in sacrifice fodder like Ophiomancer or Bloodghast and your board grows while your opponents struggle to keep up.
#27. Djeru and Hazoret
Aggression meets card advantage with Djeru and Hazoret. As long as you have one or fewer cards in hand, it gains haste and vigilance, making it a fast and reliable attacker. On each attack, you get to dig six cards deep and possibly drop a legendary creature into play for free. It shines in low-curve, fast-paced decks that empty their hand quickly, especially alongside cheap legends like Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer.
#26. Éomer, Marshal of Rohan
If you like extra combat phases, Éomer, Marshal of Rohan delivers. Whenever a legendary attacker dies, you untap your creatures and get an additional combat phase—just once per turn, but it can be a game-swinger. Pair it with legends that create tokens when they die or creatures like Brion Stoutarm that let you sacrifice your attackers for value before bouncing into another swing.
#25. Faramir, Steward of Gondor
Faramir, Steward of Gondor brings the monarchy to the legendary party. Any time a legendary creature with mana value 4 or more enters under your control, you become the monarch, and if you still hold the crown at your end step, you get two 1/1 Soldiers for more value. It’s excellent as a reliable way to retake the crown, without even needing to attack. Heck, with a flicker engine, you don’t even need to cast spells to regain your throne.
#24. Frodo Baggins
Frodo Baggins is cheap, hard to block, and helps get The Ring online with every legendary creature you play. Once Frodo is your Ring-bearer, it has to be blocked, which can work in your favor by clearing blockers or forcing awkward combat trades.
#23. Hajar, Loyal Bodyguard
Cheap, efficient, and always ready to protect the team, Hajar, Loyal Bodyguard is the definition of a selfless legend. Sacrificing it gives all your legendary creatures +1/+0 and indestructible—perfect for surviving board wipes or turning a risky combat into a blowout in your favor.
#22. Havi, the All-Father

Havi, the All-Father is a powerhouse late-game legend. It's indestructible as long as your graveyard has a few historic cards, which is easy with artifacts and legendaries. Even better, when one of your legends dies, you get to bring back a cheaper one from your graveyard to the field. This creates a loop of legendary threats, making them feel nearly immortal.
#21. Interceptor, Shadow's Hound
Interceptor, Shadow's Hound is a menace-packed nightmare for your opponents—literally. Not only does it have the keyword itself, but Interceptor shares it with all your assassins. Its real power comes from how easily it keeps coming back. Whenever you attack with a legendary creature, you can pay to return Interceptor to play from your graveyard, already tapped and attacking, perfect for black-based aggressive decks
#20. Ioreth of the Healing House
Quiet but powerful, Ioreth of the Healing House is a fantastic utility piece for any deck packed with legends. It can untap any permanent, but their real strength is untapping two legendary creatures—perfect for legends like Arcanis the Omnipotent or Empress Galina with strong tap abilities. It’s not flashy, but it keeps your engine running smoothly.
#19. Jedit Ojanen, Mercenary
Jedit Ojanen, Mercenary rewards you with a token army if you have green mana open. Every time a legendary creature enters your battlefield—including Jedit—you can pay to make a 2/2 Cat Warrior with forestwalk. That adds up fast, especially in decks running cheap legends like Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student and Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful.
#18. Kolvori, God of Kinship / The Ringhart Crest
If you control three or more legendary creatures, Kolvori, God of Kinship gets stronger and gains vigilance. Even better, it digs six cards deep to find more legendary creatures. Its flip side, The Ringhart Crest, ramps you into legends while also fixing creature-type-based strategies. Whether you need gas or mana, Kolvori’s great for green-heavy builds focused on consistency and legend density.
#17. Lara Croft, Tomb Raider

Lara Croft, Tomb Raider turns legendary artifacts and lands into resources you can steal from graveyards and play for yourself. It attacks, exiles one of those cards, and lets you use it that turn. On top of that, the raid ability gives you a Treasure token, making Lara a great payoff for legend-matters decks that want to resurrect other long-lost friends or precious artifacts.
#16. Legolas Greenleaf
Our iconic friend Legolas Greenleaf grows stronger each time a legendary creature enters your battlefield, and it rewards you for dealing damage to players by drawing cards. With reach and pseudo-evasion, this is a solid attacker and blocker.
#15. Loran, Disciple of History
Loran, Disciple of History turns every legendary creature you play into a mini Archaeomancer by returning artifacts from your graveyard to your hand. This can be huge in white decks that rely on value from things like Chromatic Star, Thran Dynamo, or Scrap Trawler to outvalue your opponents or enable infinite combo paths.
#14. Yomiji, Who Bars the Way
Yomiji, Who Bars the Way plays a protective role in legendary builds by giving every other legendary permanent a second chance and returning them to your hand, excellent for reusing ETB effects from your other legends when paired with sacrifice outlets.
#13. Cadric, Soul Kindler
Skipping the legend rule is a big deal, and that’s exactly what Cadric, Soul Kindler does for your tokens. For just , you get a hasty token copy of any legendary permanent that enters—perfect for doubling up on ETBs like Loran of the Third Path or swinging in for extra pressure. Since the tokens aren’t affected by the legend rule, you can get aggressive or use them as easy sacrifice fodder.
#12. Senu, Keen-Eyed Protector
Senu, Keen-Eyed Protector plays like your personal bird drone—scouting ahead, keeping you safe, and swooping in when the time is right. With flying and vigilance, Senu’s already a great early-game attacker and blocker. But its real trick is the exile ability: scrying and gaining life while waiting to tag back in when one of your legendary creatures sneaks in unblocked, playing a perfect role in Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful to make them even stronger.
#11. Éowyn, Fearless Knight
Handling big threats with style, Éowyn, Fearless Knight exiles a high-power creature when it enters and gives your legendary team protection from that creature’s colors. It’s a strong tempo play that clears the way for safe attacks. Pair it with blink effects like Ephemerate or Teleportation Circle to repeatedly remove threats and keep the pressure on.
#10. Gandalf the White
Gandalf the White plays the role of legendary enabler and combo booster. It gives all your legendary and artifact spells flash, and doubles up any enter or leave-the-battlefield triggers from them. This makes Gandalf slot perfectly into decks full of ETB legends, being a support piece that often ends games.
#9. Kethis, the Hidden Hand
Kethis, the Hidden Hand is a graveyard-loving legend that reduces the cost of all your legendary spells and lets you reuse them from the graveyard. Just exile two other legends and your yard becomes a legendary buffet often leading to infinite combos in Historic or Commander. This is a great choice for a combo-engine commander.
#8. Esika, God of the Tree / The Prismatic Bridge
Mana fixing, vigilance, and ramp all in one, Esika, God of the Tree is solid on its own, but the real star is The Prismatic Bridge on the flip side. Every upkeep, it cheats out a creature or planeswalker straight from your deck, no cost required. Load up on heavy hitters like Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider or Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God, and let the Bridge carry the game.
#7. Samwise Gamgee
While mostly known for enabling Cauldron Familiar loops in Modern, Samwise Gamgee brings much more to the table than just combo potential. It’s all about slow, steady value—every time a non-token creature enters your battlefield, you get a Food token. That alone helps stabilize you, but its real strength comes from turning those Foods into historic cards pulled straight from your graveyard. Since that includes legends, artifacts, and sagas, Samwise fits perfectly in grindy Abzan-style decks packed with multiple cards of those types.
#6. Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful
What makes Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful so strong is how fast its grows just from doing what legendary decks already love: playing legends. Every legendary creature, planeswalker, or land like Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire makes it bigger, and thanks to partner, you can pair it with another commander to add more colors and load up on even more legendary cards. That flexibility and speed have made Yoshimaru a top-tier pick in Duel Commander, where it becomes a massive threat in just a few turns.
#5. Captain Sisay
Captain Sisay is a legendary tutor on a stick. Just tap it to search your library for any legendary card and put it into your hand—it doesn’t get much more toolboxy than that. Sisay’s great for decks that want to assemble a particular combination of legendary cards, like Gaea's Cradle, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, or Elspeth, Sun's Champion. Build your own superteam one legend at a time.
#4. Sisay, Weatherlight Captain

#3. Ratadrabik of Urborg
Ratadrabik of Urborg is like a legendary safety net. When your other legendary creatures die, Ratadrabik turns them into 2/2 zombie copies that aren’t legendary—so you can keep their abilities around without worrying about the legend rule. Plus, it gives all your zombies vigilance and protects itself with ward, making Ratadrabik a great midrange engine that can recycle enter the battlefield effects.
#2. Dihada, Binder of Wills
As the only planeswalker that cares about legendary cards and can be your commander, Dihada, Binder of Wills stands out in a big way. Its +2 gives one of your legends vigilance, lifelink, and indestructible—perfect for swinging or blocking with no fear. The −3 ability digs deep into your deck for more legendary cards while fueling your graveyard and making Treasure along the way. And if you get to that −11? You take over everything, swing with it all, and probably win on the spot.
#1. Jodah, the Unifier
Jodah, the Unifier is the best commander for 5-color legendary decks. It buffs your legends based on how many others you control, then gives you a cascade-style effect for every legendary spell you cast—grabbing another legendary with a lower mana value and casting it for free.
