Edgar Markov | Illustrated by Betty Jiang

As Magic previews a litany of new sets and major changes to the game’s set rotation, there’s something comforting about a nice, safe, reprint set like Innistrad Remastered. Like previous Remastered sets – Dominaria and RavnicaInnistrad Remastered offers players a curated Draft experience that features some of the most memorable cards from the plane of Innistrad.

These sets are a lot of fun to play with and make for a great Limited environment. Innistrad Remastered includes more than a few valuable reprints that entice players to sink their teeth into this horror-themed set.

Innistrad Remastered Basic Information

Invasion of Innistrad | Illustrated by Alexey Kruglov

Innistrad Remastered follows in the footsteps of previous Remastered sets and focuses on the best Limited environment. Since the original Innistrad set is pretty pricey I cross my fingers in hopes of opening a classic card from the plane like Craterhoof Behemoth, Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord, or Temporal Mastery.

A note on legality of Innistrad Remastered cards: they are legal for Constructed play in any format that already allows them. Less than a dozen are legal in this Standard rotation, and about one third are not legal in Pioneer.

About the Set: The Story

Griselbrand - Illustration by Igor Kieryluk

Griselbrand | Illustration by Igor Kieryluk

Innistrad Remastered doesn't have a new story, its cards feature important characters and events from across the history of the plane. This means you can witness events like Avacyn facing Griselbrand, Emrakul’s corruption of the plane, and the well-attended wedding of Edgar Markov.

Introducing Headliners

Innistrad Remastered introduces headliners. These A-list cards are selected from the set and given several different art treatments. These are the most powerful and highly sought-after cards meant to represent the set itself and draw in the crowds. They are immortalized with a serialized version, Magic's walk of fame if you will.

Innistrad Remastered’s headliner kicks off with the first ever reprint of Edgar Markov. There is a standard and old-border version of the card with the original art, and two new pieces of art on some special treatments. This includes a movie poster version, similar to what was seen in previous horror-themed Secret Lairs.

Set Mechanics

Blood tokens

Blood tokens are a clean mechanic and useful in multiple strategies. Voldaren Bloodcaster does a beautiful job of bringing you blood tokens and Bloodbat Summoner makes them aggressive.

Disturb

I like disturb in which a card often improves a bit as you cast it for the creature version of flashback cards. Lantern Bearer is the essential 1-drop flier with upside as Lantern's Lift.

Emerge

The emerge mechanic is a good alternate way to cast big cards like It of the Horrid Swarm. It maximizes the mana you already paid into a card, so if you've got a Colossal Dreadmaw, you can emerge a Horrid Swarm for just one .

Eminence

Eminence is a Commander-exclusive mechanic and fits the format perfectly since you can always depend on the availability of your commander, thus an everlasting effect is in the same vein. So unless it loses all its abilities, you elect to send Edgar to the graveyard or some other strange zone, you'll keep on vamping as you cast vampires.

Escalate

The modal spells of Magic almost always have a home in decks because they are versatile, like that multitool for your car, bedroom, or kitchen drawer. Escalate gets expensive quick on Borrowed Hostility, but it can save your creature with first strike or add lots of power.

Flashback

The familiar flashback mechanic gets a great second use out of your instants or sorceries. Cackling Counterpart and Snapcaster Mage are two fan favorites. The retro frame is helpful and brings back the tombstone to the left of the card name as a handy signal to show you “this card could be played from the graveyard,” and appears on more than just flashback cards.

Investigate

Clues were integral to Murders at Karlov Manor, and showed up in multiple supplementary products after that in 2024. It's like Wizards wants you to find Clue after Clue about Magic. Thraben Inspector pumps out a quick token, and whether you sacrifice that artifact or for card advantage later, is up to you, but some decks love this enabling human soldier.

Madness

Madness is an underhanded way to turn the drawback of a discard into a payoff in Falkenrath Gorger.

Meld

Ah, the meld of Graf Rats and Midnight Scavengers becomes Chittering Host, this horror is still subject to targeted removal, but if you are able to control a melded card for a few turns, you usually stand a good chance at winning.

Miracle

Heart of the cards are back! Hold your draws separate from your hand to ensure you have a chance to pay the low, low miracle cost on cards like Reforge the Soul. While playable for their original mana value, the savings are immense with miracles.

Morbid

Death triggers are cool and give you value for trading off in combat, sacrificing your creatures, or as insurance from removal. The fact is, things die in Magic and it's great to recognize that with Skirsdag High Priest and other morbid cards. Call it a fascination if you must, this mechanic is a welcome one.

Soulbound

Soulbond pairs with other creatures as they enter and they both get an effect or ability. Deadeye Navigator is especially versatile since it can flicker itself to protect it, and also abuse leaves the battlefield and enter the battlefield effects.

Splice onto Arcane

Splice onto Arcane is a tricky ability that tripped me up on first read. The important part is to reveal the splice card in your hand, meaning, the card stays in your hand and you can do effect, the main drawback is that you telegraph what one card in your hand is and can only do so when you cast arcane spells. Note, there's only one arcane spell and one splice spell in Innistrad Remastered, and you're looking at it: Through the Breach.

Transform

Few cards have a transformation more drastic than Archangel Avacyn into Avacyn, the Purifier. Other transforming cards include and are not limited to werewolves like Huntmaster of the Fells and Ravager of the Fells.

Training

If Torens, Fist of the Angels lines up with one of the coven cards (which cares about cards of different power), your team can grow continuously as long as you can attack safely and trigger training. Do not underestimate the way green and white work together. They build up creatures the best compared to other color combinations.

Undying

The powerful undying mechanic makes a recursive monster out of a Young Wolf, and much stronger if you can remove or move the +1/+1 counter.

Zealous Conscripts

Zealous Conscripts

Zealous Conscripts are done being listed last. They're back, ready to threaten anyone's permanents with infinite combos. Their middle name is easy to spell: “C-O-P-Y.”

Hermit Druid

Hermit Druid

Hermit Druid does so much with one of the best activated abilities in Magic. This druid is banned in Legacy. You can enjoy an entire page dedicated to combos involving Hermit Druid.

Bloodtithe Harvester

Bloodtithe Harvester

Bloodtithe Harvester worked players over in Standard not that long ago. The Rakdos vampire is back with blood, play it again and see how it does eternally.

Slow Lands

The slow lands are good duals that enter untapped if they are your third land or later. Despite their name, aggro and controlling decks are happy to play lands like Sundown Pass, Shipwreck Marsh, and Dreamroot Cascade.

Available Products

There are normal play boosters (MSRP $6.99) as well as collector boosters (MSRP $29.99), which are available on Amazon. The cards have a wide range of looks including retro-frame cards, showcase cards, and new borderless art.

Collector Booster Box

Innistrad Remastered Collector Booster Box

Innistrad Remastered Collector booster boxes include 12 packs with 15 cards each. They're the most expensive option for collectors, but also include guaranteed Booster Fun cards and give you a shot at a serialized headliner card. Each individual Innistrad Remastered Collector booster pack has a better chance for the more foils than the play booster version.

I'm so happy with the reprint of Edgar Markov in Innistrad Remastered. Innistrad is one of my favorite planes, and the mechanics are top tier with plenty of flavor spread across each color. If you never got a chance to play during original Innistrad, don't Think Twice, this is a set with Deadly Allure that you should Savor.

Which of the Innistrad blocks was your favorite? Ever given a 13-toughness creature the Tragic Slip? What's the most bomb rare that's ever been passed to you that you windmill slam picked? Share your story in the comments or in Draftsim’s Discord.

Have a blessed day and contain your Wild Hunger!
