Sisay, Weatherlight Captain | Illustration by Anna Steinbauer
With Wizardโs current design ethos, more legendary creatures are printed then ever, which benefits some cards more than others. Sisay, Weatherlight Captain is one of the most consistent winners as its tutor ability gets stronger each time a new legend is printed.
Why Does Sisay Get Better With More Legends?
Sisay, Weatherlight Captain gets better with additional legends because of its color identity and tutor. Since Sisayโs activated ability makes it a five-color commander, no new legend is off limits. Because the tutor finds any legend you have better access to any upgrades that come your way. Say a brand-new draw engine like Wan Shi Tong, Librarian gets printed. Sisay gets to run it more than other legends and has it more consistently than other blue decks running it.
Because Sisay needs nothing more than legendary permanents, itโs also very flexible. You can run generically good cards like Deadpool, Trading Card, specific answers like Lavinia, Azorius Renegade, or even specialize your deck into archetypes like equipment, where it finds cards like Kรญli the Resourceful. Because so many legends are printed, there are multiple legendary creatures for virtually any job, which in turn makes Sisay a more powerful.
The other benefit is that as Wizards prints more legendary creatures, they open up more combo lines. Sisay sees cEDH play in part because it assembles combos without putting spells on the stack to fall to Force of Will.
Everything Sisay does adds up to an incredible flexible, powerful commander bound only by what the pilotโs desires that upgraded practically every set because thereโs at least one decent legend.
How Can I Build Sisay?
cEDH
cEDH Sisay goes straight for the combos, with win conditions centered on legendary permanents like Emiel the Blessed and Vivien on the Hunt that can be found with Sisay. Legends are also used to interact, with cards like Teferi, Time Raveler shutting down countermagic and Deadpool, Trading Card messing with opposing win conditions.
In addition to the creature-combos, you can expect many of the conventional hallmarks of cEDH, like free countermagic, Silence effects, and fast mana.
Toolbox
Toolbox Sisay is better suited to lower-Bracket play. This version of Sisay uses the many diverse legends to find the perfect answer to any situation. The might be Ertai Resurrected as a counterspell, Loran of the Third Path to stop a nasty combo, or Gaddock Teeg to stop a player from ramping too hard.
This flavor of Sisay has more conventional win conditions, relying on legendary-matters cards to generate card advantage and push yourself over the finish line.
Shrines
One of the better specializations for Sisay is shines, as all the shrines are legendary enchantments. One of the greatest weaknesses of Shrines in EDH is drawing chaff like Go-Shintai of Lost Wisdom rather than good shrines like Honden of Infinite Rage or Sanctum of Stone Fangs. Ready access to the best every game makes Sisay a tantalizing choice, even compared to dedicated shrine commanders like Go-Shintai of Life's Origin.
Best Legends For Sisay
Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff + Wan Shi Tong, Librarian
Iโm grouping Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff and Wan Shi Tong, Librarian together because theyโre useful for similar reasons. Both are extremely powerful in Commander because profiting off your opponentsโ game actions is amazing in a format with three opponents. Theyโre also handy as cheap legends you can tutor even if Sisayโs stuck at 2 power.
Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu + Karolina Dean, Runaway
Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu and Karolina Dean, Runaway ramp for Sisayโs ability, making it easier to use it multiple times a turn cycle.
Teferi, Time Raveler + Jennifer Walters
Teferi, Time Raveler and Jennifer Walters are among the stronger ways to lock your opponents out of interacting with you. Teferi gets bonus points for shutting down cascade and cards like Emergent Ultimatum.
Vivien on the Hunt
Vivien on the Hunt enables a convoluted combo line that ends in infinite hasty Felidar Guardians via Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker. The instant win makes it one of Sisayโs more convincing win linesโฆthough a one-card combo you start with in the your opening hard restricts it to Bracket 4+.
