Of all the in-universe Magic sets in 2025, Edge of Eternities is the most exciting to me. This is due in large part thanks to its unique setting, the Edge, which sits outside of Magic’s multiverse next to the Blind Eternities.

The Edge of Eternities takes place in a science fantasy setting, not dissimilar from something like Dungeons & Dragons’ Spelljammer, or popular space operas like Star Wars and Dune. As a big fan of Magic’s story, I love that we learn a bit more about the Blind Eternities, visit the Edge, and am OK to skip a second trip to Myra the Magnificent’s Intergalactic Astrotorium of Fun introduced in Unfinity.

About the Set: The Story

Astelli Reclaimer Illustration by Carly Milligan

Astelli Reclaimer Illustration by Carly Milligan

The story of Edge of Eternities is worlds apart from other Standard sets and is a stretch to connect to the overarching narrative of other sets.

Edge of Eternities has a story of epic scale, that pulls from a wide range of locations in the Edge. The setting includes five worlds, spacecraft and infinites, questionable knights, aliens that see humans as a resource, a knowledge seeking Tezzeret, and a cat named Mirri.

We have an interstellar version of a Skywhale – previously seen on Kaladesh – and warriors dressed in white armor reminiscent of the Sardaukar from Frank Herbert’s Dune. The art of droid-like constructs engaging in laser battles, space, and conflict of cosmic proportions are the nature of this set.

The story follows Tezzeret after the events of Phyrexia: All Will Be One – save for a brief flashback during Outlaws of Thunder Junction.

Set Mechanics

Station and Spacecraft

The Seriema

The station ability is a neat one that counts charge counters that you add by assigning crew to it. Once the station reaches a certain number of charge counters, the station becomes an artifact creature indefinitely. The spacecraft subtype for artifacts is space-flavor like mounts are to saddle.

Lander

Galactic Wayfarer

The Galactic Wayfarer is a common way to search for a land. A bit like a clue can be cracked to draw a card, the Lander tokens, get cracked to find and put into play, a tapped basic land.

Lander Token

Void

Tragic Trajectory

The ability word on Tragic Trajectory is void. This is a bonus on spells that cares if a permanent leaves the battlefield, and slightly different than the revolt mechanic.

Warp

Starfield Shepherd

Starfield Shepherd has warp which gives you additional ETB effects and works like adventure in that it can be cast from exile after you've used the card.

Landfall

Tannuk, Memorial Ensign

Good ole landfall is always a hit. Dudes like Tannuk, Memorial Ensign are fantastic to get value out of each turn. Just keep playing Magic and to make this mechanic work.

Cameo Mechanics

A handful of mechanics return on single cards in what WotC calls cameo mechanics. These are generally higher rarity cards with text is relatively easy to understand, even if you've never played with it before. Read up the rules for:

To save you a couple of searches, there's no infect, toxic, proliferate, or other slivers in the main set.

So we trade out vehicles for spacecraft as the on-planet machines got their focus in Aetherdrift. Some mechanics end up supported by a Commander deck rather than make it into the full set, and this is the case with sacrificing lands and proliferate.

Notable Cards

Sothera, the Supervoid

Sothera, the Supervoid

Sothera, the Supervoid is indeed the headliner, and incredibly rare as the frameless, nearly textless legendary enchantment appears in less than 1% of Edge of Eternities collector boosters. It is not a serialized card, but a really cool death trigger and almost a theft card.

Eldrazi

Anticausal Vestige

Anticausal Vestige is on the small side for the eldrazi, usually huge, creature type. Its singular presence in the set is one representative of the incredible, sometimes terrifying creatures among Edge of Eternitiescolorless cards.

Tezzeret

Tezzeret, Cruel Captain

Artifactfall cards have liftoff. The -7 ability is tame, especially if you are caught without an artifact. That said, you use the free untap artifact and artifact tutor much more. Thran Dynamo let's you easily play Tezzeret, Cruel Captain. The scalability to gain loyalty counters and Trinket Mage are handy on this colorless planeswalker.

Shock Lands

Sure you might have heard of shock lands or seen them before, but the last time a Standard rotation included them, it was because of Ravnica Allegiance, and Magic Arena was less than 12 months old. The point is, these rocking dual lands help shape any format they're legal in.

Commander Legality and Day Zero Errata

The Eternity ElevatorDiplomatic Relations

Here are a couple of card-specific rules notes you should know. The Eternity Elevator is not eligible as a commander because it does not have power and toughness. Though, thanks to Edge of Eternities, legendary vehicles and spacecraft are eligible commanders in EDH.

Diplomatic Relations got errata after the card was finalized, but before release. It plays as a bite spell: with the new text: “Target creature you control”, so that you cannot make an opponent's creature damage itself.

Although Wizards evenly splits their attention between Magic’s IP and Universes Beyond sets in 2025, Edge of Eternities is a breath of fresh and exciting ideas for the world of Magic. I love lands, LTB effects and the exploration of the final frontier in Magic.

If you want to gush about the art, the splashy cards, or argue that Starbreach Whale belongs with your sea creature commander, take to the comments or add to the discussion in Draftsim's Discord.

I heard a gnarly rumor that Edge of Eternities might be visiting the Sliver homeworld… hope that’s true!
