We live in a new era of Magic, one in which familiar properties can cross over with our favorite card game. A Universes Beyond release might be a full set, preconstructed decks, or simply Secret Lair drops that introduce mechanically unique cards and reskins.

That last option now includes a Sonic the Hedgehog crossover that brings some of Sega’s most iconic heroes and villains to a tiny cardboard slip near you! But where can you buy these cards, where can you play them, and perhaps most importantly, are they any good?

Set Details

The Secret Lair x Sonic drop is a Secret Lair-exclusive product like the recent SpongeBob SquarePants drop, so it isn’t a full set or anything. There are three products in the Superdrop: Friends & Foes, Turbo Gear, and Chasing Adventure.

Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends & Foes is the only mechanically exclusive drop, and it introduces seven brand-new cards into Magic that depict some of the most iconic characters from the franchise, including Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Eggman, plus an aura that captures the Super State.

Secret Lair x Sonic: Turbo Gear reksins seven Magic cards with names and art related to Sonic, but they aren’t mechanically unique. Some standouts from this product are The Reaver Cleaver redone as Knuckles's Gloves and the ever-popular Lightning Greaves dressed up as a pair of Power Sneakers.

Secret Lair x Sonic: Chasing Adventure rounds out the Superdrop with seven Magic cards that have art and flavor text that relates to Sonic; Fabricate and Deadly Dispute are particularly enticing reprints.

Legality

The Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends & Foes mechanically exclusive drop is legal in Commander, Vintage, and Legacy. The reskins in Turbo Gear and new art in Chasing Adventure have no impact on their cards’ legality.

Important Dates

You can purchase foil and non-foil versions of the Sonic Superdrop July 14, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST from MagicSecretLair.com.

Additionally, you can purchase non-foil versions of the mechanically exclusive drop at WPN game stores starting August 21.

Are the Sonic Secret Lairs Worth It?

Let’s start by considering the reprint products.

Turbo Gear contains several Commander staples, notably Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots. Additionally, it has some pretty pricey reprints like Hammer of Nazahn, which goes for about $16 depending on the printing. That’s most of the price of the non-foil edition right there! We also have The Reaver Cleaver reskin, a card that goes for around $8, depending on printing. Between those cards and the staples, we have a pretty decent set.

Chasing Adventures is a little less impressive. We have the all-important themed Sol Ring, and Generous Gift sees wide-spread EDH play, but the set lacks chase rares like the Hammer. That isn’t to say these cards are bad; it’s arguably a more holistically playable set since it doesn’t have Weatherlight, a fringe playable at best. But the most expensive reprint here is Fabricate, at a mere $7. Chasing Adventure looks best suited to the Sonic fan who wants the themed art.

And that brings us to Friends & Foes, the mechanically exclusive drop. These are fine. Shadow the Hedgehog seems like a frontrunner, in terms of power at least, due to how chaos control effectively makes any spell that you cast with a Treasure or mana rock uncounterable. Knuckles and Tails feel like support pieces, while Amy Rose looks like just another Boros legend () hat cares about equipment, without anything that really distinguishes it from the next Boros equipment commander. Dr. Eggman might be fun, and Sonic the Hedgehog is… well, I don’t think we have another legend that cares about flash and haste? Super State will probably see the most play, honestly.

If you like Sonic, these are pretty cool. If you don’t, these aren’t exactly revolutionary commanders. They aren’t nearly as interesting as, say, the Secret Lair x Marvel drops with commanders like Storm, Force of Nature and Iron Man, Titan of Innovation. Overall, Turbo Gears looks like the most engaging drop to me due to its high concentration of Commander staples and some already-pricey cards that ought to hold their value.

Will Local Game Stores Get the Mechanically Exclusive Drop?

Yes! WPN stores will get non-foil editions of the Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends & Foes drop to sell around August 21.
