Are you ready to explore some of the most underrated yet charming commanders in Magic: The Gathering? While mice may not be the first MTG creatures that come to mind when building a powerful deck for Commander, a mouse or two have scurried into the spotlight with some impressive abilities and fun synergies. Letโs dive into the best mouse commanders, showcasing how these tiny titans can lead your deck to victory.
Whether you're a fan of unique typal themes or simply love the idea of building around these small but mighty creatures, you'll find plenty to inspire your next EDH deck.
Letโs take a closer look at what makes mouse commanders stand out!
What Are Mouse Commanders in MTG?

Mouse commanders are legendary creatures with the mouse creature type. While mice are not a common creature type in Magic: The Gathering, Bloomburrow has introduced two legendary mice creatures that fit into specific typal or thematic decks.
And no, rats arenโt miceโthere is a difference. WotC generally supports rats more than mice (there are about a dozen rat commanders, and more than a hundred rats).
#3. Tusk and Whiskers
Stickers are an Un-set mechanic from Unfinity that the community hasnโt received well due to its complexity (especially on online platforms like Magic Online), and they were ultimately banned from all formats, including Pauper, Legacy, and Vintage. But if your playgroup is okay with them, Tusk and Whiskers is perfect for creating more. Itโs the ideal sticker-mouse commander if we ever needed one.
#2. Arthur, Marigold Knight
Arthur, Marigold Knight is a Jeskai commander who reminds me a lot of Winota, Joiner of Forces because both allow you to cheat creatures from your library when they attack. While there are some key differences, the most meaningful one is that unlike Winota, the fetched creatures are bounced to your hand at the end of the combat phase.
This is a double-edged sword: The impact is diminished, but you can fill your deck with creatures that have strong ETB (enter the battlefield) triggered abilities and reuse them.
#1. Mabel, Heir to Cragflame
Of the three, Mabel, Heir to Cragflame is the best mouse commander because it's the only one that directly synergizes with other mice by acting as their lord.
Mabel's other ability, while useful, doesnโt really benefit a typal mice deck. However, you can experiment by mixing mice and artifacts with this Boros commander and take advantage of mechanics like metalcraft or affinity for added value.
Best Mouse Commander Payoffs
There arenโt many mouse payoffs printed, as itโs only supported by one MTG set, Bloomburrow. That said, they do exist.
Manifold Mouse is a great enabler, making your Mice hit harder during combat phases.
Valley Questcaller and Valley Flamecaller act as pseudo-lords, giving additional power and abilities to your mice horde.
If youโre struggling to find playable and powerful mice to add to your decks, changelings like Taurean Mauler and Mirror Entity can also be used.
Of course, there are other cards like Adaptive Automaton and Roaming Throne that are great for any typal deck, as they arenโt tied to one type in particular but allow you to choose the one you want to support. On top of its catchy name, Sword of the Squeak is a great equipment for a mice deck, as most mice have low base power or toughness. Itโs also a good fit for a pseudo-artifact-themed deck.

This deck is obviously built around its mouse commander, Mabel, Heir to Cragflame. Mabel supports both a typal and an artifact-themed deck, so I tried to combine both and ended up with a funny typal Voltron deck thatโll likely surprise your opponents!
Commanding Conclusion

As you may have noticed, there haven't been many mouse commanders even with the release of Bloomburrow, which expanded the count to three. That said, it's worth considering that these commanders will only get better as more mouse creatures are released in the future!
