Chocobos are easily one of the cutest and most iconic parts of the Final Fantasy series, so it’s no surprise that Magic gave us a whole commander dedicated to these beloved feathered friends. Choco, Seeker of Paradise brings all the charm—and a surprising amount of power—to the Commander table.

Today, I’ll walk you through how this deck works, what makes it tick, and why piloting a flock of birds might just be your new favorite way to play.

Let’s fly right into it!

This Choco-led build leans into two things: flocks of flying creatures and ramping hard for landfall. Most of your cards either support the army of birds you're building or take full advantage of dropping lands every turn.

The Commander: Choco, Seeker of Paradise

Choco, Seeker of Paradise

Choco, Seeker of Paradise is the perfect centerpiece for a bird typal, landfall-heavy strategy. Every time your birds attack, you get card selection and the chance to ramp lands straight into play. This deck naturally wants to flood the board with fliers and keep hitting land drops—ideally multiple in one turn.

The Enablers

To get the most out of your payoffs, you’ll need to flood the board and keep the landfall engine rolling. Ramp spells like Cultivate, Nature's Lore, Farseek, Three Visits, and Rampant Growth help you to hit land drops consistently and trigger landfall.

Mana creatures like Birds of Paradise and Gilded Goose also speed things up and line up with Choco’s color identity. Traveling Chocobo and Tawnos, the Toymaker double up your landfall and creature-based triggers.

Watcher of the Spheres, Warden of Evos Isle, Patchwork Banner, and Herald's Horn all reduce costs or pump your creatures so you can deploy your threats faster.

Hermes, Overseer of Elpis and Flurry of Wings let you go wide quickly, especially when you chain off spell casts.

The Payoffs

This deck rewards you for going wide with birds and making land drops, and it has some excellent payoffs for doing both. Choco, Seeker of Paradise is the heart of the deck, and it gives you card selection and land ramp every time your birds attack.

Beastmaster Ascension can turn your whole flock into massive threats once you've attacked a few times. Kindred Discovery and Bident of Thassa draw you tons of cards whenever your birds swing in.

Murmuration, Empyrean Eagle, and Soulcatchers' Aerie all buff your team and make your growing army even scarier. Meanwhile, Felidar Retreat and Black Chocobo use landfall to grow your board and your birds' power with each trigger.

Interaction

Even in a synergy-heavy deck, you need to disrupt your opponents and protect your game plan. Keeper of the Nine Gales can bounce any permanent with the help of other birds. Judge's Familiar, Dazzling Denial, and Swan Song help to protect your board or stop key threats.

Aven Interrupter and Aven Mindcensor interfere with opponents' strategies; the latter's especially hateful towards tutoring.

Esior, Wardwing Familiar, Jubilant Skybonder, and Plumecreed Escort protect your commander and other important creatures, and Heroic Intervention is always great for dodging board wipes.

Removal

Sometimes you just need something gone, so this deck has a solid removal package. Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, and Beast Within cover single-target removal across any type.

Raise the Palisade acts like a one-sided board wipe if you're mostly birds. Chocobo Kick is a flavorful and scalable fight spell, especially with its kicker that returns lands for more landfall synergy.

Win Condition

Ultimately, you’re looking to win by going wide and swinging in with an aerial assault. Cards like Beastmaster Ascension and Felidar Retreat make even your smallest birds into major threats.

Bartz and Boko adds removal and scales with your bird count. Gwaihir the Windlord and Kangee, Sky Warden provide great final-push power buffs.

And if you're in the market for value, The Goose Mother, Choco, Seeker of Paradise, and Kastral, the Windcrested keep the draw engine running while you overwhelm the board.

The Mana Base

The mana base does a lot for a 3-color deck with a landfall package. You've got solid fixing through fetch lands like Misty Rainforest, Windswept Heath, and Flooded Strand, which pair well with duals like Breeding Pool, Temple Garden, Hallowed Fountain, and Prairie Stream.

Utility lands like Seaside Haven, Three Tree City, and Reliquary Tower add value and synergy, especially with your creature type. Restless Anchorage can even turn into a bird, further fueling the flock.

And of course, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, and Exotic Orchard help make sure you're always able to cast your spells.

The Strategy

Now that you’ve seen how all the pieces fit together, let’s talk about what this deck actually does during a game. Your early turns are all about setting up—drop your mana rocks or ramp with spells like Nature's Lore, and get a few cheap birds onto the board. The goal is to get to a point where every attack does more than just chip in for damage—you want to trigger Choco, Seeker of Paradise, draw cards, ramp lands, and set up even more explosive plays.

Once you're rolling, start to layer value—you can draw with Kindred Discovery, make tokens from landfall effects, and buff your team with anthem-style effects like Empyrean Eagle or Soulcatchers' Aerie. You don’t have to be all-in on a single combo or finish; instead, you just snowball. Every bird you cast, every land that hits the battlefield, every attack step—it all builds momentum until you’re way ahead on board.

The deck plays a classic “go wide” game, but with way more card velocity and board presence than people expect from a tribal deck. Eventually, a single big swing—maybe backed up by Beastmaster Ascension or Felidar Retreat—can close out the game. And because your fliers are hard to block and your engine is hard to stop, you’ll often feel like you're soaring over your opponents while they scramble to catch up.

Combos and Interactions

This deck isn’t all straightforward tribal beats—there are some neat little synergies hiding in the wings.

For starters, Traveling Chocobo is a total powerhouse here. Not only does it let you play birds and lands from the top of your library, it also doubles up any triggers caused when they enter the battlefield. That means double landfall triggers for Felidar Retreat, Emeria Angel, or even Choco, Seeker of Paradise itself.

Another sneaky interaction is Tawnos, the Toymaker paired with basically any bird—you get a copy of the creature as an artifact, which works great with anthem effects or even as sacrifice fodder for Seaside Haven.

And don’t underestimate how much value Keeper of the Nine Gales gives you when you’ve got a flock of tokens—you can keep tempoing people out while you still progress your own board.

These aren’t game-ending combos, but they stack up and reward sharp sequencing and familiarity with the deck.

Budget Options

While this deck is packed with powerful cards, there are plenty of ways to keep the core strategy intact without breaking the bank.

If you’re looking to trim costs, the mana base is a great place to start. Swap out fetches like Misty Rainforest and Windswept Heath for budget-friendly options like Evolving Wilds, Terramorphic Expanse, or even Tranquil Thicket for cycling value. You can replace shock lands like Temple Garden or Hallowed Fountain with tapped duals like Arctic Treeline or Glacial Floodplain without too much downside in casual play.

As for non-land cards, if Kindred Discovery is out of reach, consider Reconnaissance Mission or Coastal Piracy as cheaper draw engines. Beastmaster Ascension is amazing, but Overrun or You Meet in a Tavern can be interesting swaps depending on your meta. Heroic Intervention is pricey, but you can substitute it with Tamiyo's Safekeeping or Loran's Escape for some budget protection.

You can even cut cards like Tawnos, the Toymaker or The Goose Mother if needed—just look for lower-cost birds or utility creatures that fill a similar role. The deck runs on synergy more than individual power, so keeping the bird count high and the landfall triggers flowing is really all you need.

Other Builds

Despite its adorable, feathered appearance, Choco, Seeker of Paradise is no joke in a 1v1 setting. Thanks to its built-in card selection and ramp, Choco actually makes for a surprisingly strong Duel Commander or Brawl deck. In formats like MTG Arena’s Brawl, where the games are faster and value engines really matter, Choco’s ability to dig for lands and keep the board developing gives you a major edge.

With a more control-heavy shell or additional protection spells, you can pivot this deck into a tighter, more efficient list that excels in the one-on-one battlefield—perfect for players who want something fun and powerful without leaning too hard on combo finishes.

At first glance, Choco, Seeker of Paradise might just look like a fun, flavor-driven pick—but once you see how well it mixes card draw, ramp, and typal synergy, you realize this deck really has wings.
