Alela, Artful Provocateur (Throne of Eldraine) - art by Grzegorz Rutkowski

Alela, Artful Provocateur | art by Grzegorz Rutkowski

Alela, Artful Provocateur is a super flexible cardโ€”so much so that caring about artifacts, enchantments, and flying creatures can inspire decision paralysis. Here are five distinct themes to structure your Alela Commander deck around to inspire your next brew!

Faeries

Alela works well as a faerie commander. It provides access to the important colors plus an army of tokens to pair with lords like Scion of Oona and cards like Spellstutter Sprite or Faerie Bladecrafter that care about the number of faeries you control.

Thereโ€™s some tension between a faerie gameplan, which focuses on cheap creatures and tempo, and the artifacts and enchantments element of Alela. Bitterblossom marries both themes, but expect your Alela triggers to come from typal payoffs like Herald's Horn and Etchings of the Chosen.

Faerie payoffs often want you to cast spells on your opponentsโ€™ turns, like Alela, Cunning Conqueror, so look for artifacts and enchantments with flash to get the best of both worlds. Thereโ€™s solid aura-based removal like Eaten by Piranhas and Amphibian Downpour.

Flying Creatures

Thereโ€™s bound to be some overlap between faerie-typal and flying-matters since faeries fly; the big difference will be your payoffs. This build focuses on cards like Kangee, Sky Warden, Jubilant Skybonder, and Favorable Winds to improve its creatures.

Focus on filling the curve with cheap fliers; this will be a more aggressive version of Alela. Quality matters more than creature type, so heavy hitters like Baleful Strix, Ledger Shredder, and Momo, Friendly Flier matter more than faeries.

Expect most of your Alela triggers and card advantage to come from Coastal Piracy effects. Donโ€™t get me wrongโ€”cards like Bident of Thassa and Enduring Curiosity are amazing in any Alela deck, and all want one or two copies. Theyโ€™re just at their best in the deck filled with Flying Men.

Artifacts

This build cares less about creatures than one of the two card types Alela calls out. The first order of business is stuffing your deck with cheap artifacts like Esper Sentinel, Etherium Sculptor, and Skullclamp to maximize the number of Alela triggers you get each turn.

Once you have that, look for more artifact payoffs. Sai, Master Thopterist is similar to a second Alela, Urza, Lord High Artificer goes nuts, and beaters like Nettlecyst and Bronze Guardian go tall while Alela goes wide to attack your opponents on multiple axises.

Donโ€™t forget artifacts that support tokens. Idol of Oblivionโ€™s repeatable card draw belongs in all Alela decks, Cranial Plating makes random tokens lethal, and Ashnod's Altar can crank up the power level.

Enchantments

To shift into enchantments, bolster what Alela already does. Instead of faerie lords like Scion of Oona, run Renewed Solidarity, Caretaker's Talent, and Inspiring Leader.

Youโ€™ll also want to focus on enchantment-based removal like Oubliette and Unable to Scream. Pillowfort cards like Ghostly Prison also keep you safe.

Donโ€™t restrict your enchantment support to Alela alone. Cards like Mesa Enchantress, Inquisitive Glimmer, and Zur the Enchanter further reward you for pinning your hopes on enchantments and keep the deck running smoothly.

Stax

Stax is, in my opinion, the strongest version of Alela. It lets go of any allegiance to card or creature type to prevent your opponents from playing an easy game. Youโ€™ll slow your opponents down with disruptive cards like Ethersworn Canonist, Soulless Jailer, and Drannith Magistrate while Alela provides a clock.

Artifacts are good at messing with creatures. Cursed Totem and Torpor Orb barely impede the stax deck while shutting off a lot of what your opponents want to do; Ensnaring Bridge makes attacking with any sizeable creatures a pain while you can just keep two cards in hand to attack with your fliers.

Enchantments do a great job of messing with your opponents casting spells and messing with noncreature stuff. Think Rule of Law and Aether Barrier to prevent them from casting spells willy-nilly and Rest in Peace and Stony Silence for constant disruption.
