Thranduil, the Elvenking | Illustration by Magali Villeneuve
One of Lorwyn Eclipsedโs defining features was its typal theme, which brought great support and commanders to popular creature types like faeries, goblins, and elves. As amazing as High Perfect Morcant and Maralen, Fae Ascendant were for elf players, 2026 has been very good to them as The Hobbit introduces yet another stellar elf commander.
Thranduil, the Elvenking has perfect colors and busted abilities. It turns out Necrotic Ooze in the command zone with extra abilities makes for a very powerful commander.

This is a straightforward high-powered elf combo list that wins via infinite combos, many of which the commander facilitates. Youโre solidly in Bracket 4 territory, with many Game Changers, lots of tutors, and fast two-card combos. It falls short of cEDH optimization, but you canโt bring this to a Bracket 3 table.
The Commander: Thranduil, the Elvenking
Thranduil, the Elvenking is primarily a combo piece and backup for the deckโs stronger cards. Most of the utility lies in its ability to copy abilities from elves in the graveyard, which makes unique combos and lets Thranduil stand in for elves in already-established combos; for example, it can be the Bloom Tender in Bloom Tender + Freed from the Real. The card draw helps you to assemble combos by digging through the deck, but this list wasnโt optimized around it.
Card Draw
Card draw is critical for utilizing the large amounts of mana that elves make and getting through the deck fast enough to find the combos. Tutors help, of course, but how are you finding tutors without card draw?
Glimpse of Nature and Beast Whisperer utilize all the cheap bodies to draw lots of cards for explosive turns. Leaf-Crowned Visionary is more restrictive but still useful, plus its anthem pressures the Ad Nauseam player.
Elrond, Moon-Reader works very well with elves because most of them have activated abilities since they tap for mana. Thatโs critical to maximizing its card draw, too; it only triggers once per turn, but if you just keep a Llanowar Elves untapped, you can draw on an opponentsโ turn.
Stock Up is the only traditional draw spell in the deck that doesnโt provide some form of engine. Itโs just that good, especially when seeking specific cards.
Sylvan Library and The One Ring provide lots of card advantage at the cost of life. Itโs a cost well worth paying as you outdraw your opponents.
Triple black on Necropotence is tough on the mana base but the card draw is good enough to take the risk. You start with such a high life total that leaving this out would be criminal.
Rhystic Study is Commanderโs best draw spell because it profits off your opponents taking basic game actions. Wan Shi Tong, Librarian, Mystic Remora, and Notion Thief are strong spells for the same reason, though none of them top the Prophecy classic.
Tutors
Tutors are mostly for combo assembly, though finding the perfect answer wins games just as much as finding a combo.
Vampiric Tutor, Imperial Seal, Worldly Tutor, and Demonic Tutor are just best in class for their low, low cost.
Entomb effects are perfect with Thranduil because it copies abilities from the graveyard, so itโs almost as good as putting the creature directly into play. In addition to the OG, you have Buried Alive and Gifts Ungiven to dump entire combos into the graveyard.
Fauna Shaman and Formidable Speaker have similar utility because they dump creatures in the yard.
Finale of Devastation is a wonderful combo piece because it puts the creature directly into play or acts as an infinite mana outlet to win with.
Interaction
Interaction is as critical to high-powered Magic as fast mana or combo kills. When everybodyโs capable of winning on turn 2, you need to stop that; and when your opponents can stop you from winning turn 2, you need ways to stop them stopping you. Thatโs why high-powered decks (including this one) lean towards countermagic and free spells.
The interaction suite starts with free countermagic, including Game Changers like Force of Will and Fierce Guardianship. These are joined by Pact of Negation, Force of Negation, and so on. You can even interact with permanents for free with Deadly Rollick and Force of Vigor.
You canโt always interact for nothing, though, so Swan Song, Flusterstorm, and An Offer You Can't Refuse flesh out the section further.
With an eye towards stopping your opponentsโ interaction, Allosaurus Shepherd and Veil of Summer mess with opposing countermagic.
Elf Support
Thranduil does much of the heavy lifting as elf support, but it isnโt alone in the deck with a handful of other cards that support the elves.
Ezuri, Renegade Leader and Elvish Warmaster provide protection and bodies, respectively, but more importantly have activated abilities that pump your team. These are infinite mana outlets to win with.
Imperious Perfectโs token creation is important for cards like Priest of Titania and Marwyn, the Nurturer that require lots of elves to be effective.
Timberwatch Elf and Immaculate Magistrate are primarily combo cards for Thranduil, but you can make a pretty ugly creature with Intruder Alarm.
Dionus, Elvish Archdruid is one of the stronger elf lords. If your elf taps for mana, it makes twice that much mana, and thatโs only the floor. Two Formidable Speaker activations, a bunch of counters from Immaculate Magistrateโฆ it does so much.
The Mana Base
Most of the deckโs elves are in the mana base, mingling with the remaining Game Changers. Making mana is what elves do, and fast mana is necessary for high-powered Magic.
All the applicable 1-mana dorks are here; you know the ones. Bloom Tender is very strong and important for Freed from the Real, and Priest of Titania and Elvish Archdruid are among the reasons to play elves in the first place. Marwyn, the Nurturer gets bonus points in Thranduil as a legendary creature.
The high-powered stuff is similarly expected. Gaea's Cradle, Chrome Mox, Mana Vault, etc. There are a few utility lands like Wirewood Lodge and Boseiju, Who Endures, but the mana base is overall straightforward and what youโd expect from a budgetless Sultai () deck.
The Strategy
The most important element of piloting this deck well is awareness of your combo lines. Knowing how close you are to winning and gauging whether you want to go for the win at the earliest opportunity is vital because you need to consider that all of your opponents in Bracket 4 are also capable of winning from nowhere.
Pilot this deck proactively. You need interaction, and the deck has plenty of it, but it lacks the critical mass of interaction and card advantage to sit on its throne and play the control game. A good opening hand has a bunch of mana and something to do with it, preferably either a great piece of card draw like Rhystic Study (I struggle to mulligan any hand with a fast Rhystic) or a strong tutor line. Because the deck focuses on Thranduil as a combo piece, it doesnโt count as โsomething to doโ with your mana; a fast Thranduil doesnโt mean much unless your start with Marwyn and Dionus or similar.
When it comes to interacting with your opponents, you obviously need to stop a win or handle a major threat. Other things to be wary of are graveyard hate, which all Thranduil lines (but not every combo) relies on, and cards like Cursed Totem that stop creatures from activating their abilities. Creature interaction in general can be hard to handle; donโt be afraid to make your countermagic proactive and protect your creatures and tutors.
Finally, donโt play scared. When your opponents could have Force of Will or Deadly Rollick or other free interaction, itโs easy to fall into a reactive mindset where you hold your spells in case they have it. And when you do that, your opponent gets the effect of the removal spell regardless of whether itโs actually in their hand. Your opponent plays removal to stop you advancing your game plan; why give them that advantage for free?
Combos and Interactions
The deckโs win conditions are almost entirely combo-based. In theory, a Gaea's Cradle and Ezuri or Elvish Warmaster could get the job done, but you want infinite mana in practice.
Thranduil, the Elvenking
Thranduilโs unique combos revolve around the graveyard and Devoted Druid. The Druid line requires Druid, of course, and any one of the following cards in the graveyard:
As long as the buff Thranduil gets is +2/+2 or greater, you can make infinite mana by tapping it for mana, untapping it, then tapping it again to buff it and negate the loss of toughness from the -1/-1 counters. If your buff is greater than 2, you also get an infinitely large Thranduil.
In addition to the combo, I want to highlight two cards with important Thranduil interactions, Buried Alive and Fauna Shaman. Because Buried Alive bins three creatures, itโs a one-card win condition for Thranduil: Your Druid, your support piece, and an outlet. Fauna Shamanโs charm comes with untap effects. If you can activate it multiple times, discarding a combo piece each time, you can assemble a win without putting spells on the stack to make countering your win attempt much harder.
Devoted Druid
Aside from Thranduil, Devoted Druid combos with Machine God's Effigy. It becomes a noncreature version of the Druid, so you can put -1/-1 counters on it without killing the artifact.
Of note, Effigy doesnโt need to copy your creature. You could combo off with another playerโs Druid or use it as protection by copying an opponentโs Voice of Victory, and so on. Keep an eye out for odd lines.
Freed from the Real, Intruder Alarm, and Umbral Mantle
Iโm grouping Freed from the Real, Intruder Alarm, and Umbral Mantle together because they share a unique feature: Thranduil, the Elvenking can stand in for any of the elves mentioned below, which lets you assemble the combo with an Entomb or attempt a second win after the key creature gets removed.
Bloom Tender with Freed from the Real makes at least infinite green mana, and potentially infinite black. The lack of blue mana doesnโt matter since the outlets are green and black.
Intruder Alarm, Imperious Perfect, and mana dorks that tap for at least make infinite elves; if your dorks tap for more than , you get infinite mana, too.
Umbral Mantle makes infinite mana with any mana dork that taps for 4 or more mana. The candidates in this deck are:
The creature making the mana also becomes infinitely large.
Infinite Mana Outlets
The big outlets are Elvish Warmaster and Ezuri, Renegade Leader for an infinitely large team. Since these are activated abilities on elves, they work with Thranduil. Finale of Devastation also makes infinitely large creatures, and haste makes it easier to win. Torment of Hailfire is a backup if you have infinite mana but lack the board presence to utilize the outlets above or your opponent has protection or something.
Rule 0 Violations Check
A Bracket 4 deck canโt really violate a Rule 0 conversation because Bracket 4 is no holds barred. You should be clear this isnโt quite a cEDH deck, but beyond that, it has all the trademarks of high-powered Commander, with too many Game Changers and fast combos to qualify for anything lower.
Budget Options
Making budget cuts to a high-power deck is tricky but not impossible. Itโs also worth noting that players interested in high-power Commander tend to be pretty proxy-friendly, so you could go down that path.
As always, start with the mana base; nix the utility lands, the Gaea's Cradle, and so on. Since youโll want to cut the pricier fast mana, you probably need a few extra lands.
The Game Changer card draw optionsโRhystic Study, The One Ring, etc.โcan go for more standard draw spells like Chart a Course or Night's Whisper.
The good tutors have lots of budget replacements. Luckily, Buried Alive is already fairly cheap. Other budget options include Dina's Guidance, Lively Dirge, and transmute cards like Muddle the Mixture.
As for the combos themselves, most of the combo pieces are rather cheap. Outlets are more pricey, but you have good options in cards like Bloodrite Invoker and Wildheart Invoker.
Making the interaction suite cheaper is what really hurts the deck because that means transitioning away from free interaction like Force of Will to Counterspell and other things that make you choose carefully about when you tap out and when you respond to your opponents.
Overall, you can go for budget and high power, but the deck will be slower and more vulnerable.
Other Builds
The consequence of strong typal abilities is narrow casting; Thranduil will always be an elf commander. But you have lots of flexibility over the power level, which is how most other builds will differ.
To power Thranduil down from Bracket 4 to 3, ditch the fast 2-card combos, tutors, and Game Changers. Focus on a more traditional elfball plan: Make a bunch of mana, a bunch of bodies, then play a Craterhoof Behemoth. Winning with combat damage instead of combos is a great step down. Iโd also want to focus on Thranduilโs second ability and play more legendary elves like Lathril, Blade of the Elves, High Perfect Morcant, and Thranduil the Strategist.
To bump the power up, cut the cuter combos with cards like Intruder Alarm and Freed from the Real. Thereโs no reason not to run Thoracle-Consult in cEDH. You can also fill out the interaction suite with cards like Opposition Agent and Orcish Bowmasters, and the meta currently encourages cards like Clever Impersonator to copy opposing Rhystic Studies.
Commanding Conclusion

Ezuri, Renegade Leader | Illustration by Karl Kopinski
I look forward to Thranduil in Commander. Though 2026 has already introduced a handful of elf commanders, Thranduilโs high power ceiling and combo potential distinguishes it from other options like High Perfect Morcant, which were tailored for a more casual Bracket.
