Complete List of Reality Fracture’s Echoed Pairs and Where to Find Them

The main theme of Reality Fracture (FRA) is to show the Echoverse, an alternate MTG reality created by Jace Beleren. In this twisted multiverse, we have alternate versions of beloved and traditional MTG characters across all rarities.

To better show this contrast, each FRA Play Booster will have at least two mirrored characters. So, a pack might have a blue Chandra and a red Chandra, or a white Thalia and a blue Thalia, and so on. This set has plenty of echoed pairs as its main shenanigans, and today, we’re covering all of them. Let’s go!

What Are Reality Fracture’s Echoed Pair Cards?

Reality Fracture’s echoed pairs are cards that represent a character in our prime Multiverse (Chandra, Torch of Defiance) and their mirrored, Echoverse version (Chandra, Chill of Compliance). These can also be two of the “Way of…” legendary enchantments; Way of the Pyromancer and Way of the Cryomancer form an echoed pair, for example.

Echoed pairs reflect what-if scenarios. For example, white Tomik is affiliated with the Orzhov guild, but in Jace’s alternate universe, he’s a member of the Izzet guild and gets a red card.

Echoed pairs can also be different card types. Gideon died in MTG’s main universe, and so we get a white artifact card, Gideon's Memorial. However, Gideon is a black-aligned creature in Jace’s universe, Gideon the Oathless.

Echoed pair cards sometimes mimic their counterparts’ mechanics. Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive and Tetsuko Umezawa, Pursuer both care about creatures with power or toughness 1 or less. Both Yargle, Glutton of Urborg and Yargle, Goliath of Otaria are vanilla creatures with strange and mirrored stats: 9/3 and 3/9. Geist of Saint Thalia is a take on the original Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, and a name plus lore reference to the original Geist of Saint Traft.

How Many Echoed Pairs Are There?

There are a total of 43 echoed pairs in Reality Fracture, so 86 total cards on this “bonus sheet“. Individually, there are 66 uncommon cards, 14 rare cards, and 6 mythic rare cards. Taking these two-by-two, they form 33 uncommon pairs, 7 rare pairs, and 3 mythic rare pairs.

How Many Echoed Pairs Are in a Pack?

Play Boosters have three dedicated echoed pair slots, and these will be mostly uncommon cards (88.9%). It’s guaranteed that you’ll have a matching echoed pair and a third non-matching card of any rarity. You’ll also have a shot at a borderless echoed pair card in the traditional foil slot.

Collector Boosters are mostly the same, and you’ll get three foil uncommon echoed pair cards for sure, with two of them matched. There are three other slots in which you can open echoed pair cards, and these can be rare or mythic rares.

Are Echoed Pair Cards Always Opened Together?

No. In each booster, you’ll open a pair of matched echoed pair, but also another echoed pair card without a corresponding pair, regardless of whether it’s a Play Booster or Collector Booster. So, you can have two different uncommon Tomiks and one of the uncommon Thalias, or two mythic Garruks and a version of an uncommon Fblthp, for example.

Best Reality Fracture Echoed Pair Cards

#16. Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance

Many small things about Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance put together make me like this card. It’s an enabler and a payoff for a discard strategy, and it also fits an aggressive game plan, adding to the board and making your opponent lose resources in the long run. 

#15. Geist of Saint Thalia

Geist of Saint Thalia gives cost reduction to noncreature spells, discounting many card types, including planeswalkers, artifacts, instants, and more. I mean, Etherium Sculptor sees play as a 1/2 virtual vanilla, so imagine this card.

#14. Samut, Hazoret's Champion

Samut, Hazoret's Champion has an interesting static ability. Haste to all your creatures is strong, especially when paired with beefy green creatures that don’t naturally have it. It’s also a worthy addition to Commander decks that want or need to attack.

#13. Liliana the Repentant

Liliana the Repentant is almost like a planeswalker, allowing you to mill and later reanimate a creature or planeswalker. It’s a very strong engine for self-mill value decks and threshold decks. A 2/2 that has value later in the game is usually very playable.

#12. Lyra, Tolarian Archangel

Lyra, Tolarian Archangel is a blue Resplendent Angel that triggers on card draw instead of lifegain. You have many tools in blue decks to draw three cards in a turn, and the activated ability is also nice; even if you somehow don't have a need for the angel token, no one hates extra cards.

#11. Gideon the Oathless

Gideon the Oathless is a reverse Soul Warden creature that’s annoying to target, and it’ll deal a lot of damage to your opponents if they keep casting creatures. It reminds me of Graveyard Trespasser in a way, and it’s a solid aggressive black card.

#10. Liliana the Faultless

Liliana the Faultless is a buffed Soul Warden, one of the best designs for supporting lifegain strategies. This card also triggers with planeswalkers, and you can discard a card in a pinch to protect your best threat.

#9. Lyra, Archangel of Dawn

Lyra, Archangel of Dawn gets better if you’re playing a lot of angels, but just a 3/3 flier for 3 mana that grows while you’re gaining life is pretty strong. Many decks will be able to attack with this card as a 4/4 flier on turn 4 consistently.

#8. Garruk, Curse Breaker

Garruk, Curse Breaker is a beefy 5-mana planeswalker that can immediately make a 4/4 token creature and draw a card, or fire off a mini-Overrun right away. The +2 is also interesting, considering that we can go from 5 mana to 7 or follow Garruk with a 2-mana card.

#7. Ajani Unrelenting

Six-mana Ajani Unrelenting is wild, and exactly what you’d expect from a 6-mana investment. It’s a perfect card for a midrange planeswalker deck, and it gives you a 2/2 creature each time you activate any planeswalker’s loyalty ability, which is huge. You also have ways to sculpt your hand and buff your tokens for the win.

#6. Garruk, Veiled Butcher

Garruk, Veiled Butcher protects itself very well with the +2 ability, going from 5 to 7 loyalty and negating a threat, or just sniping a small creature right away. The minus ability is super interesting, because you can edict an opponent or trade a 1/1 for a 4/4. Finally, you also have a Mind Rot ability on your planeswalker, which we rarely see outside pricey planeswalkers like Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh.

#5. Chandra, Chill of Compliance

A 3-mana planeswalker with four different loyalty abilities is at least noteworthy. Chandra, Chill of Compliance mirrors Chandra, Torch of Defiance’s abilities, and we have two different +1s. One gives card advantage while the other adds mana. You can also slow down a creature with the -X, so it checks many planeswalker boxes.

#4. Ajani Resolute

Two-mana vary in power, but Ajani Resolute is a little bit pushed for its mana value. It’s a synergy card, don’t get me wrong, but even in Standard the lifegain deck can trigger this planeswalker three or four times each turn to great result.

#3. Karn, Argent Defender

A new Death and Taxes piece, Karn, Argent Defender is a great hate card to have when your opponents build around enters effects. You can use this card to stop enemy Mulldrifters, or to improve your cards that enter play with a downside, like Leveler.

#2. Vraska, Soul of Stone

The new card in the Monastery Mentor department, Vraska, Soul of Stone is a weird Jeskai () spellslinger that makes 1/1 artifact treasure tokens. Yes, you’re turning your spells into actual mana, and Vraska's a great source of artifact token production. This card is so flexible that you can put it in many decks, and it can also be a competent new commander to start entirely new decks.

#1. Samut, Tyrant of Naktamun

Samut, Tyrant of Naktamun gives all your spells split second, a mechanic that’s hard to see in a Standard-legal set, and with good reason. Your spells become very hard to interact with, and that’s very similar to a card like Hexing Squelcher. Better, even, because you can’t interact with split second cards when they’re on the stack, so cards like Aven Interrupter and Jeskai Revelation don’t work. Some players have already called this card a design mistake, so let’s see what happens in the months to come.

Echoed Pairs are the essence of Reality Fracture, and they’ve been very well executed, both from a creative standpoint and in the power of the cards themselves. I gotta say, I think WotC found a very creative solution to solve a flavor problem in this set, and having many uncommon legendary creatures is a given in MTG nowadays. Plus, it’s probably the first Draft set that you’ll be able to take a guess as to what your opponents are holding and passing to you, with unclear but exciting implications.
