Every so often, Magic drops massive event sets that settle yearsโ€™ worth of story and have lasting consequences for the Multiverse. The most recent event set was March of the Machine, which saw the threat of New Phyrexia extinguished. Most planeswalkers lost their spark, and the Omenpaths opened to connect the planes.

Our next event set is Reality Fracture, which brings the story of the Metronome Arc to a close and finally reveals what Jace wants from Loot, and his plans for the Multiverse. What mechanics capture it? How will the story shake out?

Letโ€™s delve into the information we have about Reality Fracture!

About the Set: The Story

Reality Fracture set logo

The tweets that announced Reality Fracture promise a โ€œclimacticโ€ set that concludes the Metronome Arc, a three-year story arc composed of the Omenpath Arc (Kellanโ€™s story, from Wilds of Eldraine to Outlaws of Thunder Junction), the Dragonstorm Arc (Bloomburrow to Tarkir: Dragonstorm), and a third, currently unnamed story arc that began with Edge of Eternities and concludes with Reality Fracture.

Few details of the story have been revealed besides the promise of Loot and Jaceโ€™s return, and that the story will see Jaceโ€™s attempts to mend the Multiverse come to an endโ€”for good or ill.

Reality Fracture Mechanics

No new mechanics have been announced as of yet, though Mark Rosewater promised that the setโ€™s theme would be something so innovative that WotC wasnโ€™t sure it would be physically possible. We know that Secrets of Strixhavenโ€˜s prepare makes a mark on this set, but it's unclear if this is a cameo or a featured mechanic.

Speculation

My speculation has two parts: the mechanics, and the story.

To start with the mechanics, I expect one that involves the exile zone. Casting cards from exile is often coded as something beyond the bounds of reality. I wouldnโ€™t be surprised to see mechanics like cascade, warp, and suspend either return or be built upon to sell the idea of reality fracturing. As for Rosewaterโ€™s promised innovation, Iโ€™m not sure what it could be. It could be cool to see the set get a Chaos Draft vibe by having a few slots dedicated to random cards throughout Magicโ€™s past, but that doesnโ€™t feel like a physical barrier.

Omenpath Journey - Illustration by Nereida

For the story, Jace and Loot are confirmed to return, likely with Ugin and Nicol Bolas as the elder dragons were trapped in the Meditation Realm. Vraska and Ral are important characters to Jace that we can expect to appear, perhaps in cahoots as Vraska and Jace parted ways before TDM.

On a broader scale, we can expect to see a payoff to the ancient Fomori civilization that the story has been teasing for years. I expect some multiversal-level disaster that has to do with planes colliding ร  la Alara; itโ€™s the most obvious answer to a set called Reality Fracture, and it would build upon the boundaries between planes weakening as the Omenpaths open, an idea suggested in Duskmourn; we learned that Valgavoth could always force open doors to Duskmourn on other planes, but it became far easier after the Omenpaths opened. It also lines up with Jaceโ€™s failed ritual in TDM. While we donโ€™t have the exact details of Jaceโ€™s plan, his horror of the Omenpaths suggests his goal is to seal them and perhaps even isolate each plane in the Multiverse from the others. It would make sense for a cataclysmic failure of his ritual to have the exact opposite effect, weakening those borders further.

A great villain was teased in both the preview panel and the Everything Announced for Magic: The Gathering in 2026 article that summarizes said panel. I think the worst possible choice would be to reveal that all of this has been Nicol Bolasโ€™s super secret backup plan planted in Jaceโ€™s subconscious. The villain reveal likely involves the destruction of the Meditation Realm fracturing Jace himself. While I donโ€™t want to see Bolas become the primary villain, it could be interesting to see the misfired ritual birth some amalgam of Jace, Bolas, and Ugin. We might also see Jace get split into a good and evil side, which could be a meaningful development in Jaceโ€™s character. Jace has always been aware of the ethical issues surrounding his powerful mind magic and the harm he could do; a version of Jace without morals could make a terrifying villain and give another version of Jace a chance to reflect on what heโ€™s done in his crusade to save the Multiverse based wholly on his image of the perfect, safe Multiverse.

Another potential villain would be the Fomori themselves. Though long extinct, the technology that preserved Loot was Fomori in origin, so the big villain might be the Foromi, resting in stasis for untold centuries, waiting for the right trigger to awaken them. A race capable of warring with the Eldrazi must be formidable indeed.

Notable Cards

Bloodline Recollector is the serialized headliner of the set with 500 numbered copies. It threatens to draw players cards faster than Ancestral Recall with a terrifyingly easy to re-prepare spell.

Wrap Up

Fracture - Illustration by Miranda Meeks

We have very little information on Reality Fracture right now, but the crumbs WotC offered lead into an intriguing wood. I look forward to seeing how the Metronome Arc shakes out and learning about Jaceโ€™s true plans. Wizards doesnโ€™t have the best track record with event sets or the recent story, but I remain eternally optimistic.

What do you think of Reality Fracture? Are you looking forward to the event set? What do you think will happen? Let me know in the comments below or on the Draftsim Discord!
