Every so often, Magic drops massive event sets that settle years’ worth of story and have lasting consequences for the Multiverse. The event set before this was March of the Machine, which saw the threat of New Phyrexia extinguished. Most planeswalkers lost their spark, and the Omenpaths opened to connect the planes.

This event set is Reality Fracture, which brings the story of the Metronome Arc to a close and finally reveals what Jace wants from Loot, and the blue mage's plans for the Multiverse. Are you prepared to surveil the Echoverse?

Reality Fracture is a “climactic” set that concludes the Metronome Arc, a three-year story arc composed of the Omenpath Arc (Kellan’s story, from Wilds of Eldraine to Outlaws of Thunder Junction), the Dragonstorm Arc (Bloomburrow to Tarkir: Dragonstorm), and the Echoverse story arc from Edge of Eternities, through Lorwyn Eclipsed, Secrets of Strixhaven, and concludes with Reality Fracture.

The story sees Jace’s attempts to mend the Multiverse come to an end—for good or ill.

Reality Fracture Mechanics

Secrets of Strixhaven‘s prepare makes a substantial mark on this set, and with tons of callbacks throughout.

Empower Jace

The empower Jace mechanic works much like amass as it creates a token if you need one then adds counters. If you already have the named planeswalker token, it simply adds loyalty counters to your token planeswalker. With Jace all over the set, you get every color in on the Jace game, and the ride-on mechanic is the main way to uptick the card selection and card draw ‘walker.

Flashback

Flashback returns and the cards that have it might even care if it was cast from the graveyard. Eitherway, this helpful mechanic gives you a second use out of your spells.

Prepare

Some creatures enter prepared, others can ready up again if a condition is met. They each offer extra instant and sorcery casts from your creature spells. This card advantage without dedicating a full slot to either creature or noncreature is quite valuable.

Surveil

Surveil is 100% an evergreen mechanic, and it usually is not as noteworthy as it is in this set. Plenty of decks care about cards going to the graveyard or the very instance of surveil in a turn like on Surveillance Phantasm.

Threshold

Proft, Sinister Mastermind requires threshold where as many cards use it as a benefit you unlock. I note the sinister side of Proft because it can easily fill your graveyard.

Cameo Mechanics

Countersculpt and Theorist's Sanctum bring back behold, Winter, Team Player uses convoke, Fblthp, Knows the Way and all around the domain. Within the set, the only -1/-1 counters can come from Hapatra, the Desert Fang, proliferate is found on Tam, the Possibility, and the speedy Samut, Tyrant of Naktamun gives split second to lots of spells.

Find the basic landcycling on Apex Witchstalker, Hexhaven Battalion, Undulating Witness, or Vinelasher Adept, and you have a nicely balanced card that helps you early and late.

Cadet

The wizard soldiers are 2/2 tokens that can do the bidding of nearly any color. If Limited history tells me one thing, how good 2/2s are says a lot about the speed and nature of combat in a given expansion set.

Heartwood

If a tree is hard as a rock, do we call it a mana rock? Rock or tree, Heartwood tokens build a ramp and give Gruul () a lift.

Jace Token

The subtype “Jace” has shown up as a planeswalker subtype since the first of the card type in original Lorwyn on Jace Beleren. It's highly unlikely you'll see the subtype on a non-planeswalker. But you do get tokens with the Jace subtype, and opens up the token type to exciting possibilities and planeswalkers.

Notable Cards

Bloodline Recollector is the serialized headliner of the set with 500 numbered copies. It threatens to draw cards faster than Ancestral Recall with a terrifyingly easy to re-prepare spell.

This set is crazy with way more planeswalkers than a typical in-universe set. Perhaps WotC is compensating for not having planeswalkers in Universes Beyond sets? These cards consistently turn a table upside down and alter the game state dramatically.

The special guests are mind, pair, or Jace themed. Chosen for good reason with quite a history of high-level Magic play around them. This lineup of guests actually blend their art into a panoramic piece of horizontal art that belongs on a carousel.

Additionally, each pack of Reality Fracture will contain a pair of characters that represent an existing character and their mirrored version, as demonstrated by the red and blue Chandras above. Unlike Planar Chaos, which saw a 1-to-1 colorshift of cards, these reflections will adapt the character to new colors instead of directly breaking the color pie.

One more way to drive home the notion of echoed pairs are cards with art that matches side by side.

The full art basic lands can't be left out. These connect vertically to extend the towers Jace created and remind me of Link with both the Ascend power and a paraglider.

Store Championship Cards

There are three cards that are prizes for the Reality Fracture store championships, event winners win Mastermind's Acquisition, the Top 8 win Jace Reawakened, and participants win Thought Scour.

If you've never done a store championship, you'll need to brush up on your Standard, the Swiss pairings award 3 points for Bo3 match wins, and 1 point per draw. At Regular or Competitive Rules Enforcement, it is a learning experience for any that have not tried it before.

Draft Night — $89.99

A Reality Fracture draft night starts with one collector booster split among the table's participants… no actually, it's more fair to begin with three play boosters per player and draft two cards at a time in the Pick-Two Draft format. There are 12 total play boosters and one collector booster. Good luck reaching a reality in which the players use exactly the 90 included basic lands.
