Unknown EOE Illustration – Art by ノッツオ Nottsuo
Officially, the only new mechanic from Edge of Eternities that we know about is Station.
Unofficially, though, there's a lot more we know about the upcoming Magic set, given the unusually large number of EOE leaks we've had in the last ten days. Including one of its new mechanics.
So, first and foremost: SPOILER WARNING! If you'd rather enjoy EOE reveals at their official pace, just sit tight: They officially start tomorrow.
But if you don't mind an early peek…
… There's one new EOE mechanic we know a lot about, since the leaked cards fully describe it. It's called “Warp,” in clear reference to Star Trek or Warhammer 40,000 where “warp” is how spaceships travel at faster-than-light speeds.
At the time of writing, five cards related to warp have been leaked. And some of those cards are pretty sweet!
How Does Warp Work in MTG?

From the leaks we've seen, Warp lets you “dash-and-exile” a creature for a discounted cost, then later cast it again out of exile for its full mana value. Cards in exile with Warp are labelled warped, and we've seen spells that care about warped status. It's like a modified version of Evoke!
“Warp X” is an alternate casting cost that reads: “You may cast this card from your hand for its warp cost. Exile this creature at the beginning of the next end step, then you may cast it from exile on a later turn.”
In all cases you are casting the card, so Counterspell will work against your warp spell, no matter how you're casting it.
If you “warp in” a creature, you have your whole turn until it has to “warp out,” so (on top of any enters trigger it may have) you can sacrifice it, blink it, attack with it (if it has haste, or you grant haste to it), etc. Notice that if your “warped-in” creature gets removed from the battlefield before your end step, then it will end up in whichever game zone a normal creature would, rather than in exile.
Timeline Culler
Source: Reddit
Timeline Culler looks thus far to be the most useful among warp creatures.
“Suicide black… your time has come,” says u/mulletstation in the most-upvoted reply to Timeline Culler's leak (“Suicide black” is a aggressive mono-black deck that plays lots of cheap creatures – think Red Deck Wins, but with Swamps).
And given how Final Fantasy introduced Cecil, Dark Knight to Standard, while also reintroducing Dark Confidant, an hyper-aggressive Mono-Black deck may not be too far-fetched come Edge of Eternities!
“Timeline culler seems kind of insane,” agrees u/BT–7275. “Probably the best Reassembling Skeleton ever.”
Can You Cast Warp Creatures From Your Graveyard?
No, by default you cannot Warp from the graveyard.
Timeline Culler is the lone exception so far. What can be confusing is that WotC decided to tweak Culler's reminder text in a way that, if that's the only warp card you see, you wouldn't be wrong in assuming warp cards can be cast from the graveyard.
“They put it in the reminder text specifically because of its ability (other cards can't warp from the graveyard) but I think that's actually more confusing than helpful,” notes u/Vozu_ in what is a widely shared sentiment among players. “It looks like an experiment in adding clarity, but I think this will make people just confused if this card happens to be the first time they see a Warp card.”
Starfield Shepherd

“So the clear comparison is Overlord of the Balemurk,” notes u/rmkinnaird while evaluating Starfield Shepherd‘s potential in the Modern format. “This synergizes incredibly well with Ephemerate and Phelia, easily finding Guide of Souls and Ocelot Pride in the same turn if you can warp the angel and blink it. The fact that it can't slowly tick down into a big creature does make this a worse threat than Overlord, but this allows you to have a similar vibe without playing black.”
And even cEDH players are cautiously optimistic about this white angel's potential.
“It’s not as good as Ranger Captain, obviously,” notes u/GoblinBreeder23 in the thread sharing Starfield Shepherd‘s leak on the cEDH subreddit, “but it’s a pretty good esper sentinel tutor IMO, and getting an extra tutor from it is pretty good if you have spare mana.”
Nova Hellkite
Source: Reddit
“[Nova Hellkite]'s functionally a T3 burn spell that you can then play again and get the body if you don't have other stuff to cast,” says u/Kale_Shai-Hulud about the uses for this warp dragon. “That's really nice if you're running a red heavy burn deck imo.”
Mono-Red aggro (aka “Red Deck Wins”) looks very strong right now in Standard, even after the last round of bans. Its 3-mana slot is heavily contested, but perhaps a dragon that, in practice, counts as two instances of “Burn Face for 4” could find a role. Above all against decks with valuable X/1s, like Faerie Mastermind when you're facing Dimir Aggro (another staple in the current Standard meta).
Anticausal Vestige
Source: Reddit
Anticausal Vestige was the first warp card to be leaked. It caused quite the commotion on reddit because it's an Eldrazi (the only one we've seen in EOE thus far), but also because it spelled out how warp works.
“Hello premium flicker target,” says u/Fun_Room554 in one of the most upvoted replies to the leak: You get Anticausal Vestige's bonuses when it leaves the battlefield for any reason, not just because it warps out.
And it would seem that Anticausal Vestige will work pretty well with another EOE mechanic: Station.

If you play the Seriema on turn 3, Anticausal Vestige can single-handedly Station the Seriema on turn 4 (plus its other leaves-the-battlefield triggers).
Close Encounters
Source: Reddit
Close Encounters was part of the very first batch of EOE leaks that we know of. It doesn't have warp itself, but references “warped creatures you own in exile” – that's to say, cards that you cast for their warp costs, and then exiled during your end step.
This is the one lone card we've seen that references warped creatures; it's a safe bet we'll see more.
Warp Wrap Up
Edge of Eternities will officially start its reveal season tomorrow, Tuesday 8th. And it will certainly bring at least a handful of more warp cards. But, thus far, this is all we know about this upcoming Magic mechanic.
Stay tuned as, starting tomorrow, we shift from unofficial leaks to official reveals!
