Quintorius, History Chaser | Illustration by Darren Tan
I’ve run the gambit of combos for the new Secrets of Strixhaven precon commanders. Zimone, Killian, Dina, and Rootha have all received articles about combos to upgrade your precon or brew around with; now, it’s time for Quintorius, History Chaser.
Quintorius interacts with cards leaving the graveyard, which encourages sacrifice loops and similar effects. These combos cover a range of power levels to suit your needs.

Underworld Breach + Grinding Station + 0-Mana Artifact
Remember when this combo got Underworld Breach banned in Modern?
With all three permanents in play, sacrifice your 0-mana artifact to Grinding Station and mill yourself. You can then escape it with Underworld Breach. When the artifact enters, the Station untaps and you can go again. The best artifacts are Mox Opal and Mox Amber since they’ll net mana with every loop, but you can probably dig up a win from all the storm these cards create.
Like pretty much any Breach combo, this one’s best suited for high-powered games at Bracket 4 and 5. Don’t upgrade your precon with it, start a new deck (and add other Breach combos for consistency!).
Altar of Dementia + Dualcaster Mage + Sevinne’s Reclamation
Dualcaster Mage has many two-card combos, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add more pieces. This one is particularly handy for Quintorius since it leaves the graveyard, allowing you to make infinite Spirits. Note that in this combo and the following, the free sacrifice outlets are interchangeable.
Altar of Dementia in play, Dualcaster Mage Sevinne's Reclamation in your hand, plus any legal SR target in your graveyard. Cast SR, then play DM. When it enters, put the trigger on the stack targeting SR, then sacrifice it. You can then reanimate DM with the copy, which produces another copy, and so on.
This is a much better casual combo for Bracket 3 decks. Reclamation is already great with Quintorius and the combo’s super flexible since you can use so many sacrifice outlets.
Karmic Guide + Reveillark + Goblin Bombardment
A more classic combo, this is similar to the above, except it uses Karmic Guide and Reveillark.
Start with Goblin Bombardment in play, and either creature in your graveyard. Play which creature isn’t in your graveyard. If you play Karmic Guide, you straight up reanimate Reveillark; otherwise, you need to sacrifice Reveillark to get Guide back. Once you get going, you’ll alternate between reanimating the two.
With three pieces and a high cost, it’s another decent combo for Quintorius in Bracket 3, maybe even 2. Of note, these pieces already work well with Quintorius since the creatures cause cards to leave the graveyard.
Luminous Broodmoth + Ashnod’s Altar + Persist/Undying Creature
There are about a billion different ways to establish an infinite combo loop with persist and undying creatures. This one is notable due to Luminous Broodmoth’s utility as a combo enabler and protection piece for non-flying creatures.
Start with all three permanents in play, then sacrifice your persist/undying creature to Ashnod's Altar. This triggers both persist and the Broodmoth; one of the two abilities will resolve. Let’s say it comes back with a -1/-1 counter. The other trigger fizzles because the creature is no longer in the graveyard. You can then sacrifice it, and the creature comes back with the other counter.
While persist combos are very strong, I’m a big believer in them for Bracket 3. You need multiple pieces, they all cost some amount of mana, and your opponent has plenty points of interaction to disrupt you.
Sun Titan + Angelic Renewal + Goblin Bombardment
This combo is more specific than the others, which makes it less flexible, but no less lethal.
Start with all three permanents in play. Sacrifice Sun Titan to Bombardment, which triggers Angelic Renewal. Sacrifice it to reanimate the Sun Titan; then, Sun Titan reanimates the Renewal.
This might be the best combo to add to the precon. Sun Titan and Angelic Renewal are both useful in the deck (I’d be surprised if at least one wasn’t in the base precon) and Goblin Bombardment works perfectly well with a token generator as a burn spell. Since these cards work within the fabric of the deck independently, it’s a great combo to add for inevitability without building a dedicated combo shell.
