Ahead of The Hobbit debut stream this Friday from MagicCon Amsterdam, Mark Rosewater released his mechanical teaser for the set, which includes partial information such as creature types and rules text about cards from the upcoming set.

Tweaked Lord of the Rings Mechanic

“A mechanic from The Lord of the Rings returns with one small change” strikes me as the easiest to guess because LTR only had two mechanics. It seems unlikely that this will be anything other than amass goblins, which are more relevant to The Hobbit than orcs.

Song Sagas

Tales of Middle-earth featured sagas based on songs with the original text, which will return in this set. You can expect Far Over the Misty Mountains and Chip the Glasses and Crack the Plates! as upcoming sagas. The former will almost certainly make Treasure; given that Maro promised dwarf typal effects, it probably concerns them, too.

Cards with “An Enduring Story”

A line that caught my eye was “some cards will be able to have ‘an enduring story.’” Story in modern Magic often correlates with sagas. I’d love to see creatures that transform into sagas as a result of their heroic deeds, or sagas that transform into standard enchantments so the story inspires you.

Gaea’s Halfling

The card with the text “, add for each halfling you control” is puzzling; Bilbo is the only hobbit featured prominently in the story, so I’m surprised to see additional halfling support. This could indicate a Limited halfling theme, or it could be a flashy mythic or rare to entice players to upgrade Food and Fellowship.

A New Red Counter

“A new type of counter created by a hackathon group looking to expand red’s slice of the color pie” will feature in the set. I couldn’t decode the hackathon reference, but I’m guessing the new counter plays on aggro or impulse draws. For aggro, I’d expect a counter akin to a stun counter that forces a creature to attack or prevents it from blocking. Alternatively, I could see “impulse counters” used to track how many turns you can cast a card from exile, similar to suspend, though that doesn’t expand red’s slice of the color pie that way a consistent assault on your opponents would.

Finding Many Basics

Settle the Wreckage

The rules text “That player may search their library for that many basic land cards” should be familiar to anybody playing around Ixalan Standard as the downside to Settle the Wreckage, a strong white board wipe. I’d imagine this indicates, if not a reprint, a similar board wipe.

Smaug's Bane

One of the promised creature types is “Legendary Creature – Human Noble Archer”, which must refer to Bard, the archer responsible for shooting Smaug from the sky. I imagine Bard will have white in his color identity, reach, and some anti-dragon tech—maybe protection from dragons, or an activated ability to destroy an attacking dragon. It could be a more general anti-flying effect that happens to kill Smaug the Magnificent.

Bears, Bears Abound

The preview included many references to bears, which ought to excite the Ayula, Queen Among Bears players.

The first is another type line: “Legendary Creature – Bear Shapeshifter Warrior,” which can only belong to Beorn, the shapeshifter who gave Thorin’s party shelter, ponies, and guidance. He also had a major impact on the Battle of Five Armies at the end of the book, so I suspect a second line applies to him: “the biggest Bear we’ve ever printed.” Currently, that title belongs to Copper Host Crusher, an 8/8; I wouldn’t be surprised to see Beorn be a 10/10.

There will also be a bear lord with “Other bears you control get +2/+2.” I doubt that’s also on Beorn, if only because three spoilers for one card seems excessive and that seems awfully vanilla for an anticipated commander.

Speculating on Card Names

Lastly, I want to speculate on some of the card names Rosewater gave us, rapid-fire:

Dancing from Dark to Dawn references a scene in which Bilbo saw Beoron with many bears; I expect a green sorcery that creates bear tokens.

Down, Down to Goblin-town references Thorin’s company getting kidnapped by goblins; I expect a Threaten effect with goblin synergies.

Getaway Barrel is sure to be a cheap artifact you can sacrifice to make a creature unblockable.

I think Hobbit Hole will be a land and the halfling Gaea's Cradle; either that, or it makes Food/halfling tokens.

Stone by Sunlight will likely be a removal spell; I’m thinking a Pacifism variant.
