Ninjutsu has been around for just over 20 years, but just under 10 years ago, Magic designers completely broke it by adding one simple word to it: commander. This came after Wizards started designing products with Commander in mind, with a yearly set of precons from Commander 2013 through Commander 2019, depending on how you treat C20 and C21.
In the middle of that came Commander 2018, the set that gave us Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow and its commander ninjutsu ability. It wasn’t even the face commander, but that’s probably why it slipped through the cracks. Yuriko has become a popular commander for ninjas and ninjutsu based decks, but you can also get up to some really controlling things with it in the command zone.
If you have any lingering questions on how commander ninjutsu works, I’ve got you covered!
How Does Commander Ninjutsu Work?

Commander ninjutsu is Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow’s activated ability.
You activate it anytime after your opponent has declared their blockers by paying and returning an unblocked attacker to your hand. If Yuriko is in your hand, you reveal it from your hand as part of the cost, too. If the ability resolves, you put Yuriko onto the battlefield tapped and attacking the same player that the unblocked creature had been attacking.
How Is This Different Than Regular Ninjutsu?
Commander ninjutsu allows you to activate Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow from the command zone. Regular ninjutsu only lets you activate ninjutsu abilities from your hand, which makes the ability useless in the command zone.
The History of Commander Ninjutsu in MTG
Commander ninjutsu first appeared on Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow, a card in the 99 of the Commander 2018 Subjective Reality precon led by Aminatou, the Fateshifter.
Yuriko has been reprinted a few times, most notably in Commander Legends and Commander Masters. The card was also reskinned as Yuffie Kisaragi for the Final Fantasy: Through the Ages bonus sheet.
Two Unknown Event playtest cards from 2025 made reference to commander ninjutsu by giving their creatures “fixed commander ninjutsu”, which is subject to commander tax.
Does Commander Ninjutsu Still Work from Your Hand?
Yes! Commander ninjutsu is a variant of ninjutsu that allows you to activate the ability from the command zone, but you can still play Yuriko in the 99 of a Satoru Umezawa deck and activate its ninjutsu ability, for example. You can check the Comprehensive Rules for the specific wording (702.49d).
Does Commander Ninjutsu Count as Casting?
No, commander ninjutsu doesn’t count as casting.
Is Ninjutsu Affected by Commander Tax?
No! Commander tax is an additional cost to cast your commander from the command zone. Because you don’t cast Yuriko when you activate commander ninjutsu, it neither cares about commander tax nor increases the commander tax you’d pay if you were to cast Yuriko normally.
The designers have even riffed on this with playtest cards with “fixed commander ninjutsu” abilities.
Is Commander Ninjutsu an Activated Ability?
Yes! All ninjutsu abilities, including commander ninjutsu, are activated abilities.
Can You Counter Commander Ninjutsu?
Yes, but you need to stifle it. Counterspells don’t work here because ninjutsu is an activated ability, not a spell on the stack. To counter commander ninjutsu, you need abilities that can counter activated abilities, or abilities in general.
Commander Ninjutsu vs. Sneak
Commander ninjutsu and sneak are both abilities that allow you to return an attacking creature to your hand to gain another benefit in combat, usually to replace that attacker with another. Sneak does appear on a handful of noncreature cards, though.
The primary difference is that commander ninjutsu is an activated ability while sneak is a static ability that represents an alternate casting cost. Sneak is therefore vulnerable to regular countermagic, but it also triggers casting triggers.
Sneak also restricts the timing specifically to the declare blockers step. Ninjutsu is ambiguous, so you could bring a ninjutsu creature in during first strike damage, during combat damage, or during the end of combat.

What Makes Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow so Good?
The first ability that makes Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow so good is commander ninjutsu. Because it’s an activated ability rather than an alternate casting cost, it bypasses commander tax. You just need open as you attack with an unblocked attacker, and you can bring Yuriko onto the battlefield during combat. It’s also more difficult to interact with because you don’t cast a spell, so you don’t need to worry about most countermagic.
The saboteur trigger goes off every time your ninjas hit; it’s not a “one or more” ability, so if you have five ninjas that deal combat damage, that’s five triggers. Blue and black have access to plenty of cards that can manipulate multiple cards on the top of your library, like Brainstorm, Sensei's Divining Top, and a slew of tutors, so you can easily stack your deck to take out chunks of your opponents’ life totals. A combat step that reveals Shadow of Mortality and Temporal Trespass represents 26 life before you consider the combat damage itself.
Ninjutsu also has some edge cases and weird interactions; if your unblocked creature had first strike, you could have it deal first strike damage, then activate commander ninjutsu to have Yuriko deal regular damage. Yuriko would then trigger its combat damage trigger and see any other ninjas deal regular combat damage.

Commander ninjutsu is one of the free entries whenever anyone starts talking about design mistakes and broken mechanics. While Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow isn’t as busted as cards like Nadu, Winged Wisdom or Vivi Ornitier, you can’t deny the impact it has had considering that commander ninjutsu has never returned, and TMNT got the somewhat fixed sneak ability instead.
What do you think of Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow in the current landscape? How would you make your own fixed commander ninjutsu? Or do you disagree that it even needs fixing in the first place?
