The newest Marvel Super Heroes spoiler confirms that pizza is in as the primary motif of Universes Beyond products, at least those touching New York Cityโ€”because Magic players didnโ€™t get enough pizza with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Lucky the Pizza Dog was spoiled by none other than Kevin Smith of Clerks fame, who dropped the card on Facebook yesterday morning. It slipped into a batch of images that included alternate covers for Marvel comics themed around Smithโ€™s Jay & Silent Bob:

But weโ€™re here for the dog, and Lucky looks like a powerful synergy piece for the right deck, as itโ€™s a cheap Food-sourcing machine from the Marvel Super Heroes Commander decks!

Who Is Lucky the Pizza Dog?

Source: marvel.fandom.com

Lucky the Pizza Dog is a very regular dog with ties to Hawkeye, or Clint Barton. They first crossed paths when Clint battled a gang he nicknamed the Tracksuit Mafia; Lucky, then named Arrow, protected Hawkeye when the Mafia tried to shoot him, which resulted in Lucky losing his left eye. Since then heโ€™s been a close companion to Hawkeye, though heโ€™s also spent plenty of time with Kate Bishop. Lucky also appeared in the Disney+ show Hawkeye.

Lucky receiving a Magic card indicates that the development team went deep in deciding which characters to adapt into the game. I donโ€™t say this to dismiss such a good boy, but Lucky is an extremely bit player and niche enough character that it suggests we can expect to see lots and lots of smaller Marvel characters come to Magicโ€”especially considering Lucky somehow has collector number 726, suggesting a massive set.

Is Lucky the Pizza Dog Good?

Lucky the Pizza Dog has two abilities: The first creates Food tokens whenever you play a cat, dog, or hero, and the second is an Ajani's Pridemate-style buff where it gets a +1/+1 counter each end step if you gained life that turn. The total package is an extremely efficient Food-creation engine for the decks that jump through hoops.

The lifegain payoff is extremely disappointing. Itโ€™s markedly weaker than Ajani's Pridemate because it triggers at most once a turn, and it canโ€™t benefit from lifegain that happens in the end step from cards like Unholy Annex.

The Food creation is far more interesting because one of the weaknesses of Food decks is a lack of consistent Food production; so many Food cards are Limited spells that make a Food here and there. Thatโ€™s what makes Ygra, Eater of All such a fantastic Food commander: It being in play makes tons of Food.

Lucky also makes plenty of Food, but only if you jump through the hoops of having a critical mass of heroes, cats, and dogs. Thatโ€™s a hefty restriction, but it might ease up once MSH and MSC drop since theyโ€™ll bring an influx of heroes. Luckyโ€™s also in good company with the cat/dog synergies; most popular cat commanders are generally Selesnya, perhaps with another color, and dog commanders, though much less supported, trend towards green.

Commanders That Want Lucky

Rin and Seri, Inseparable

Rin and Seri, Inseparable is the most obvious card to look towards because it also cares about cats and dogs, though Lucky doesnโ€™t interact much with this Naya commander besides being a payoff for the same creature types.

Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second

Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second makes a decent home for Lucky since it benefits very much from consistent token production like this. You would need to incorporate a strong cats/dog/heroes subtheme to justify Lucky, but Jinnie Fay often leans that way anyway; you want typal lords like Regal Caracal and Feline Sovereign to buff your tokens.

Sophia, Dogged Detective

Sophia, Dogged Dectective might be the best commander for Lucky because itโ€™s somehow a legendary creature that cares about dogs and artifact tokens. Itโ€™s the nichest of the niche, but also the most popular dog commander per EDHREC, so Sophiaโ€™s most likely to win Luckyโ€™s heartโ€ฆassuming Ravnica has a good pizza joint or two.
