MTG Leak Reveals New Creature Type and Powerful Mana Rock Token

Reality Fracture has yet to release but we can already turn our gaze to the stars for a glimpse of the upcoming Star Trek set: Sirus Dice has opened pre-orders for a product called Star Trek Treasure Packs that includes sets of randomized dice and, perhaps more interesting, photos of tokens from the upcoming set. Included among these is a glimpse of a new creature type: Romulan, a key species from the show that will surely have a big role in the game.

What Do These Tokens Tell Us?

While the art of all six tokens is new, the spoilers Wizards has already dropped (which you can check out on the Draftsim Spoiler Page!) include token generators for three of the tokens: Officers, Klingon Warriors, and Planets.

Captain James T. Kirk makes officers as one of the modes on its attack trigger, and it’s one of the stronger ones.

Cha'Dlch Investigator isn’t super with that cost; this is solidly a Limited card for black decks that need a little oomph. But with an entire precon themed around klingons, I expect to see much better.

Saurian Explorer makes New Planet tokens, though at a great cost. But, like the Investigator, this is more aimed at Limited.

While token generators for the other token types haven’t been revealed, I do find it interesting that there are so many basic token types being made because that suggests Star Trek might be a token-focused set. What I mean by that is that some tokens are clearly designed to be made for one card in the set. To use Reality Fracture as an example, the 8/8 Leviathan and 5/5 Dragon have unique stat lines and the 3/3 Forest Tentacle unique enough names and typing that these are clearly made by specific cards, probably an uncommon or rare. But these tokens are generic enough to body and type to come from anything.

Which Star Trek Token Looks the Strongest?

Evaluating based on the tokens alone is tricky since what really matters are the token generators, but there are two stand-outs: the Klingon Warrior and New Planet.

A 2/1 with haste is an extremely aggressive token. Not making the creator wait a turn to attack means you can hit hard and fast, which plays nicely with aggro payoffs or burn. A permanent that makes a Klingon each combat could be very scary in Limited and Constructed. If Wizards prints something that makes them en masse ala Forth Erolingas!, they might even print a new token staple.

But New Planet has my attention. Saurian Explorer feels like a very powerful card. Yes, it costs too much to be really exciting, but it’s just a common. Once we get to the rare power level, making lands could get scary, especially with landfall cards or cards like Amulet of Vigor that untap lands. Even in a world where the rare version of this effect just has an activated ability that costs instead of , you’d be a Training Grounds away from absurd ramp. With a landfall-themed precon, I expect some nasty New Planet cards in November.
