The commanders who catch the spotlight in preview season are often the powerful ones. The Witherbloom, the Balancers, the Jace, Multiverse Architects, those that dominate games with overwhelming abilities. But Commander is, at its heart, the format of jank, and boy does Star Trek have a janky commander:
Georgiou, Terran Emperor screams low-bracket Commander build-around: It offers a lofty goal to reach for with an exciting payoff, but it’s not a Witherbloom that dominates the game. Let’s break down some of the cards that make it exciting.

Ad Nauseam
Ad Nauseam is famously one of the best combo cards/draw spells in the game, if you have the life to pay. While Commander players rarely dabble with Angel's Grace or Phyrexian Unlife like their Constructed counterparts (Commander has a high enough life total, especially if you build with AdNaus in mind), this is an unmistakable combo: Since Georgiou keeps you alive at 0 life, you can draw your entire deck without fear…assuming, you know, your opponent doesn’t have a Swords to Plowshares.
This is certainly the flashiest thing you can do with Georgiou, but I want to take a moment to consider its actual power. If you go by the letter of the law in the Commander Bracket system, this combo would disqualify you from Bracket 2 on the back of Ad Nauseam being a Game Changer. However, the Bracket system is meant to guide conversation, and it’s worth talking to your table about whether or not they would allow this combo, because I think it is acceptable at Bracket 2. Yes, this is a two-card combo utilizing the commander, but it also costs 11 mana and is heartbreakingly fragile; the failstate here isn’t “oops, I don’t win,” it’s “you removed my commander, guess I die.” Your commander needs to survive, in the color with the worst protection spells. I don’t even know how impactful drawing your deck is in a bracket where Sol Ring is basically the only fast mana you can draw! It’s just worth a conversation over.
Life Payment
Ad Nauseam or not, the deck needs ways to drop that life total to make Georgiou function. Luckily, black is very, very good at that. Blood Celebrant and Wall of Blood are all-you-can-pay life sinks, and these are two of the most efficient options; there’s tons of redundancy here. Plunge into the Darkness is also pretty cool as a cantrip that becomes Demonic Tutor if you pay enough life.
In addition to those cards that sink your entire life total, consider ones that slowly drain it. Dark Confidant and Gwenom, Remorseless pick away at your life and provide card advantage each turn while cards like Grim Servant and Dismember off one-time, lose-life-fast exchanges. Between these and the cards above, you’ll have no trouble getting your life below zero. But turning that into a win is still something worth considering. Yes, 10 1/1 tokens a turn wins eventually, but this deck is still extremely fragile. You need to win quicker.
Life Exchange
One of the funniest ways to win is exchanging life totals. After all, your opponents probably don’t have something that stops them from losing the game at a null or negative life total. Soul Conduit can remove the entire table slowly. Magus of the Mirror and Profane Transfusion only take out one player at a time, but they get you past the fragility of negative life.
Sacrifice Effects
Sacrifice outlets like Carrion Feeder offer another path to victory since you get ten pieces of fodder. Something I find extremely appealing is using Blood Artist death triggers to toe the boundary between life and death. Let’s say you’re using Wall of Blood to sculpt your life total. You can bring yourself to exactly 0 or -1, then feed the tokens into your sacrifice outlet, gaining life to a positive life total. This interaction provides the best of both worlds: You get all the power of the commander while removing the fragility. Also, while you’re messing around with your life total, that Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, whatever, is draining your opponents to death.
If you want to get really janky, you can feed those tokens into an Ashnod's Altar to generate mana for Torment of Hailfire and other X-spells. An Emergence Zone even lets you do it in the same end step you make the tokens!
Georgiou, Terran Emperor isn’t going to be the strongest commander from Star Trek nor the most built, but it could be the jankiest.
