Whether you missed the date or just lost the fight with the Secret Lair website, those of you who are still in search of some of the exclusive Marvel cards that came out last year might have another crack at them some time relatively soon.

Marvel Reprints on the Horizon?

Head Designer Mark Rosewater took to Blogatog last week to answer a question about mechanically exclusive cards being printed in Secret Lairs, and their potential to be reprinted. As he explains: โ€œFor most drops with mechanically unique Secret Lair cards, we are printing extra cardsโ€ฆ. Weโ€™re then selling those cards through our normal channels to local game stores, who can then sell them directly to all of you.โ€

We've seen this in multiple forms already. For example, some number of Secret Lair x Marvel's Deadpool drops made their way to local game stores, which is currently the only way to secure a copy of Deadpool, Trading Card outside of buying/trading. The D&D Honor Among Thieves reprints also hit stores this year, though these had the โ€œUniverses Withinโ€ treatment, where cards from Universes Beyond crossovers are given alternate names and art to match Magic's lore instead of their source material.

Rosewater confirms that this won't be the case with 2024's Marvel Secret Lairs, each of which included a mechanically exclusive card across five different drops. These aren't throwaway cards, either. The drops included some very intriguing and powerful Commander cards, like Wolverine, Best There Is, Storm, Force of Nature, and Iron Man, Titan of Innovation. Players who didn't grab these last year haven't had another chance to get them, but it sounds like that won't be the case for long.

โ€œWe Have Discovered a Future Productโ€

That quote comes from Rosewater's Blogatog post, in which he says 2024's exclusive Marvel cards will not be coming to game stores, because they've found another avenue with which they can reprint them. So these cards will be made available to players and collectors at some point, but it's unclear when, and in what form.

โ€œDiscovered a future productโ€ implies there's something new in the works, or at least a twist on something familiar. We already know there are quite a few more Marvel sets coming to Magic, though no timeline has been given beyond Spider-Man releasing in a few weeks. It's very possible that those sets just line up with the mechanically exclusive cards we've already seen. For example, if an X-Men set comes out next year, it seems like there'd be no reason actual X-Men like Storm and Wolverine couldn't be reprinted there, either mainset or in some supplementary product.

Possibility number two is that Wizards of the Coast is already planning an Avengers-like set several years from now, which could be an easy excuse to plug in a bunch of necessary Marvel reprints, whether in a main set or a bonus sheet, or something similar.

Alternatively, it's been announced that some number of future Marvel sets will include Commander precons, so these reprints might not even be additions to full sets, but rather reprinted into supplementary product. That doesn't seem impossible, but Commander precons doesn't sounds like โ€œdiscovering a future product.โ€

That could be a surprise for the end of this year, or it could be something being worked on for 2028, we have no idea. But they will be comingโ€ฆ eventually.
