After the last two outings, I didn’t think I’d see a Marvel Universes Beyond set that would get me excited, and yet I’m kind of intrigued by Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, the first UB set of 2027. It’s still and always will be inferior to an in-universe set, but it feels like it’s at least trying to raise the bar on what a UB-MTG crossover should look like. A mix of another IP with Magic’s personal fantasy aesthetic and storytelling flair on top. Dare I say I’m excited to see how it turns out?
It’s also getting the full set treatment, complete with a Commander precon line-up consisting of four decks, much like 2026’s Marvel Super Heroes. We only have names and color identities right now, so check back in towards the tail end of 2026 and early 2027 as we see more of the set.
What Is Marvel: Darkhold Destiny Commander?
Marvel: Darkhold Destiny Commander (MDC) is a supplementary tie-in for the main Darkhold Destiny set (MDD). The MDC set code includes other products aside from the Commander precons, such as Scene Box exclusives and the like, though this article will focus solely on the four Commander precons.
Each Darkhold Destiny precon includes 30 new-to-Magic cards, and there will also be a Collector’s Edition release of these decks, which are much more expensive but also come entirely in surge foil.
- GET ALL 4 MARVEL: DARKHOLD DESTINY COMMANDER DECKS—Includes 1 of each deck: Strange Academy, Gods of Asgard, Midnight Sons, and Lords of Hel
- SUMMON THE MIGHTY, THE MYSTIC, AND THE MONSTROUS—Bring the might of the Marvel Universe to the battlefield as you combat your friends with ready-to-play decks featuring your favorite Marvel characters
- 30 NEW COMMANDER CARDS—Each ready-to-play deck includes 30 Commander cards entirely new to Magic: The Gathering
- FOIL BORDERLESS COMMANDERS—Command your decks in style with 2 Legendary Creature cards featuring a shiny Traditional Foil treatment in each deck, including 1 with special Borderless art
- EPIC MULTIPLAYER BATTLES—Magic’s most popular multiplayer play format, Commander is an action-packed, free-for-all battle full of strategic plays and social intrigue (best with 3–5 players)
When Does Darkhold Destiny Commander Release?
Darkhold Destiny releases on April 9, 2027, and the Commander decks will release at the same time. Prerelease events will take place a week prior from April 2-4, and you can often buy or pick up preordered decks from your local game store at that time.
How Much Will Darkhold Destiny Commander Precons Cost?
Darkhold Destiny Commander precons have an MSRP of $75, which is the current presale price for all four decks on Amazon.
Prices can obviously fluctuate based on demand and the new cards/reprints in each deck. For example, all of the Marvel Super Heroes precons are currently selling for below MSRP, with the most expensive around $60-70 and the cheaper ones in the $50 range.
Darkhold Destiny Commander Collector’s Edition
The Collector’s decks for Marvel Super Heroes had an MSRP of $160, which should be consistent with the Collector's Edition decks for Darkhold Destiny. The contents are exactly the same as the normal decks, just with surge foiling for all cards included.
Who Are Darkhold Destiny Commander Decks For?
Aside from the general Commander crowd, Darkhold Destiny will obviously have some extra appeal for Marvel fans, in particular those interested in the arcane and gritty characters represented in the set.
Anyone who’s been building around heroes and villains from previous Marvel sets will also appreciate the influx of new creatures for those typal decks.
Marvel: Darkhold Destiny Commander Decks
Midnight Sons
Midnight Sons is an Orzhov () precon with the taglines: “Gain Life | Vampires”. That’s one of the most straightforward themes you can put on a precon, and this may end up being the simplest of the decks. We’ve seen this exact theme before with Blood Rites from Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander, and there have been a couple other vampire precons in the past.
Commander and Theme
The commander appears to be Eric Brooks, AKA Blade, AKA The Daywalker. No telling who the backup commander will be, but Dracula and Morbius might show up as other famous Marvel vampires.
Strange Academy
Strange Academy is an Esper () precon with the taglines: “Spellcasters | Blink”. Again, pretty straightforward, though we’ll see if the mainset “vengeance” spells factor in at all here. Note that arcane is also back as a subtype in Darkhold Destiny, though we don’t know if it’ll be supported with splice yet, or if there will be any other interactions with arcane spells.
Commander and Theme
Going out on a limb here, but I think the “Spellcasters/Blink” deck might combine themes of spellcasting and blinking. Ephemerate-type shenanigans mixed with strong ETB creatures and a couple Archaeomancer-style recursion pieces. Maybe a Displacer Kitten to marry those two themes together.
Doctor Strange is featured on the box artwork, and this commander should be a pretty large departure from Doctor Strange, Surgeon, the only card representing the character in Marvel Super Heroes.
Lords of Hel
Lords of Hel is a Rakdos () deck with the taglines: “Generate Tokens | Sacrifice”. Aristocrats, baby! This is not an original theme at all, but one with tons of support across pretty much every color, so it should be easy to upgrade, or disassemble to grab pieces for other decks.
Commander and Theme
Hela is on the box art; you might remember the Goddess of Death as portrayed by Cate Blanchett in Thor Ragnarok, one of the best Marvel movies, and certainly the best in the Thor series. This Asgardian goddess will likely be a token generator and sac outlet, and I’d expect something like a modern-day Lyzolda, the Blood Witch.
Gods of Asgard
Gods of Asgard is a Naya () precon with the taglines: “Power Matters | Godlike Gear”. The second part gives the deck just enough wiggle-room to be interesting, though I’d expect this to play in much the same space as Limit Break from Final Fantasy, another Naya equipment deck with a power-matters theme.
Commander and Theme
Thor shows up on the box art, a character we saw a good bit of in Marvel Super Heroes across four cards if you include Jane Foster. “Gods of Asgard” could hint at a typal theme, and Naya Gods would certainly be a selling point for a unique precon, but I expect this to not focus on gods as a central theme, while still including many god creatures due to its connection with Asgard.

Commanding Conclusion

Darkhold Destiny Art | Illustration by Viktor Farro
Despite my cautious excitement for Darkhold Destiny, these Commander precons are highly uninspiring, at least not by theme alone. It’ll be cool to see Hel and Blade lead some precons, but the deck descriptions all read as “more of the same”, and I’m very much interested in seeing Commander precons explore new territory these days.
There’s an argument that simpler themes are better for new players drawn to Magic by Universes Beyond sets, but I don’t think that argument holds any water when the starting price is $75 and the new cards are all as complex as the ones from Marvel Super Heroes.
All that said, we haven’t seen the actual cards yet, so maybe the commanders and new cards can do the talking and put their spin on the deck themes.
