Our first Universes Beyond set of 2027 has been announced, and it’s the expected Marvel crossover for nexy year: Darkhold Destiny. This news comes from an announcement panel at New York Comic Con, and they showed off a generous amount of art from this set, which you can find here.

Introducing Darkhold Destiny

Darkhold Destiny will release on April 9, 2027, making it the second set of next year after Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, and the first of three Universes Beyond sets slated for 2027. It was all but guarenteed that 2027 would include at least one Marvel set, though most guesses pointed towards an X-Men or Guardians of the Galaxy crossover. This set will instead focus on the mystical and arcane side of the Marvel Universe, with an emphasis on the otherworldly creatures and spellcaster type characters of the IP.

Many of the “omissions” from Marvel Super Heroes show up in key art, including “darker” characters like Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, and Blade. There are also returning characters like Doctor Strange, Thor, and Scarlett Witch, who all showed up in 2026’s big summer Marvel set.

Putting the Magic in Marvel

The developers put a strong emphasis on the design of this set, and claim that Magic artists were given more freedom to reimagine popular Marvel characters in a way that works better for Magic: The Gathering’s fantasy aesthetic. This was a major complaint of the two previous Marvel sets, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel Super Heroes. It does, indeed, look more magical that Marvel’s previous MTG outings.

A preview for The Darkhold was shown at the panel. This Marvel spin on The One Ring shows us the set symbol and, hopefully, general vibe of the set. Note that book artifact type, which hasn’t really been relevant since it was introduced in Secrets of Strixhaven earlier this year.

It’s also safe to say at least one new Infinity Stone will make an appearance in the set. We have The Soul Stone and The Mind Stone already, with four remaining Infinity Stones confirmed for the future of Magic.

Darkhold Destiny releases between Nauctis and Kamigawa: Titanbreach next year, with two more unannounced Universes Beyond sets coming out in 2027. There’s no promises that one of those won’t also be a Marvel set, though that seems highly unlikely.
