The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth boasts a huge number of products you can pick up showcasing all kinds of interesting characters in a variety of treatments. One such category of products are the Lord of the Rings Scene Boxes, which showcase some of the amazing pieces of art depicted on six of the cards in the set.
This product dropped three months after its main set release and would make a handsomely unique gift. Here you'll find all of the info. regarding scene boxes, including the cards inside and where you can buy them.

What Are the Lord of the Rings Scene Boxes?

The Lord of the Rings Scene Boxes are four different boxes that contain the following:
- 6 Scene Cards
- 3 Set Boosters
- 6 Art Cards
- Display Easel
The four versions are the Aragorn at Helmโs Deep Scene Box, the Might of Galadriel Scene Box , the Gandalf in Pelennor Fields Scene Box , and the Flight of the Witch-king Scene Box.
The titular scene cards can be arranged to create the scene depicted on the boxes and are still functional playing cards. They are like those that make up Bilboโs birthday party (found in draft boosters and in prerelease kits) and the Battle of Pelennor Fields.
In addition to the six special art scene cards are six art card versions of the scene cards that simply have all the Magic rules text removed from them. These, paired with the display easel, offer you a way to show off one or all the beautiful scenes without the Magic rules overlaid on top of them. Much like wallpaper for desktops or mobile.
Thereโs nothing special about the three set boosters contained within; theyโre just regular set boosters. They donโt contain any special cards and donโt offer you chances to pull any of the mythical serialized Rings of Power.

These Scene Boxes directly compare to The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Bundle. The bundle contains eight set boosters, a card storage box, a spindown life counter, and four foil scene cards depicting The One Ring being tossed into Mount Doom. These bundles currently sell for a pretty hefty markup from the traditional bundles typically have an MSRP around $50 each. You basically trade five set boosters, the box, and the spin down for the art cards, and two extra scene cards.
Should I Buy the Lord of the Rings Scene Boxes?
If you love the depicted scene, want six playable versions of the cards, and a way to display art cards, Iโd say theyโre worth it, especially if you can find a sale under $40.
The Lord of the Rings Set boosters go for more than $12 with most of that value carrying over from the heightened box prices due to the special Realms and Relics Box Toppers.
This means youโve got at least $36 worth of set boosters in a scene box, and the remaining value needs to come from the six scene cards, their art versions, and the display. Money-wise most of the scene cards come in under $3 a card, bringing us to less than $18 from the scene cards alone. So as long as the box is $50 or less, I say the scene boxes are worth it from a financial standpoint.
Some collectors have warned others that the poor foiling on this batch of cards is significant, so if this is a big deal for you, save your investment for the next collectible.

Best Cards in the Lord of the Rings Scene Boxes
#8. Fell Beast's Shriek
What separated Fell Beast's Shriek from the others is โSplice onto instantโ. Goad is sometimes better than removal and when your opponents have creatures on the battlefield, and this spell being repeatable at instant speed spell is killer.
#7. Galadriel's Dismissal
Galadriel's Dismissal is a cousin to Teferi's Protection, and Commander players will tell you how versatility on one card means a lot. Use the phase effect on offense, defense, wide and single targeted. If you dismissed this at first glance, look again.
#n. Call Forth the Tempest
Call Forth the Tempest is a one-sided board wipe that starts off with two free spells. Even if those spells are a floor of Abrade and Lightning Bolt for 3 damage, that's still three cards worth of spells from one sorcery. On the high end, you get a free Flaming Tyrannosaurus and Combustible Gearhulk. This is a great card in Commander brackets 3 and under and can net you three cast triggers too.
#5. Legolas's Quick Reflexes
The power of a card has to take into consideration the cost and split second is a rare ability making this instant highly desirable. Untapping, tapping to punch out creatures, and hexproof are all signals of combo potential, and the result is trickery that your opponent will have no answer for. Legolas's Quick Reflexes is like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildโs Link using The Matrix bullet-time to pick off bokoblins. (Hey, we're talking crossovers right?)
This is also the one of the best money cards of the scene box cards, so be watchful for the prices on Aragorn at Helmโs Deep in comparison to others.
#4. Nazgรปl Battle-Mace
Yes, Nazgรปl Battle-Mace costs about the same as an eldrazi after you cast and equip it, but equipment has a knack for getting around those costs. This one doesn't require an attack to be brutal. The most devastating part of the weapon is the punishing potential to steal permanents, including those fetch lands your opponent wants to crack.
#3. Olรณrin's Searing Light
Scaling up with the size of your table is key to Olรณrin's Searing Light. Exiling creatures without targeting is a premium, and the damage to the face is just the best version of a burn spell. The Searing Light is an incredible value and easy to set up to be super effective.
#2. Sorcerous Squall
The fact that delve made it onto this card is nuts, and few things break players down more than using their cards against them. Sorcerous Squall is one of those cards that can swing you from being behind to winning out of nowhere.
#1. Galadriel, Light of Valinor
It is frightening how often Galadriel, Light of Valinor gets triggered three times in a given turn. The most important part is that the card feeds itself with card draw, combine with a flash creature on your opponent's turn and this gets absurd. Plus, the modes fit the colors so well, it is just beautiful.
Ranking these top cards from the Lord of the Rings Scene Boxes was nearly impossible, since the power level among the 24 cards is substantially high.

Scene Boxes take the Secret Lair concept of direct-to-consumer individual card sales with unique art and mix in some excellent display opportunities for collectors and some extra boosters to sweeten the deal. Collecting every scene card and assembling them all is certainly an enticing goal for Lord of the Rings and Magic collectors alike.

Do you think there’s any chance the scene boxes will be released in non foil variants?
I prefer the look of non foil myself.
These actually all have six new cards each to makeup the scenes. They aren’t reprints from the set.
