It's been a minute or two since elementals were front and center. They were a major focus back in Core Set 2020, which gave us some archetypal staples like Risen Reef and Omnath, Locus of the Roil, and they appear in basically every set to some extent.

But with a return to Lorwyn on the horizon, it looks like elementals might be front and center once more, at least in one of the Commander precons for Lorwyn Eclipsed.

Commander Precon Reveal

The two Commander precons from Lorwyn Eclipsed were revealed shortly after the first wave of unofficial spoilers from the set dropped. We've got two decks for this round, which include:

  • Dance of the Elementals (): 5-color elementals with the taglines “Summon Huge Elementals | Sacrifice and Duplicate.”
  • Blight Curse (): Jund something-or-another, featuring a goblin on the cover, with the taglines “-1/-1 Drain | Unleash Creature Combos.”

The Jund deck‘s theme was described as using -1/-1 counters in various ways, which certainly sounds like the return of persist, a mechanic that originally debuted in Shadowmoor/Eventide. Five-color elementals… that one's a little more obvious.

There's sure to be a huge typal focus for this deck, but the the “Sacrifice and Duplicate” tagline suggests there's a specific focus on making copies of your elementals here. Maybe you get copies of elementals as you sacrifice them, which is definitely in line with the old evoke mechanic, which debuted in 2007's Lorwyn as the signature elemental ability. You're bound to see classics like Mulldrifter and Shriekmaw, and the madmen at WotC might even throw in some of the Modern Horizons 2 pitch-elementals like Endurance, Fury, and the rest.

Speculatively, the existence of this deck makes it less likely that there will be a strong elemental typal focus in Lorwyn Eclipsed proper. They've recently been using Commander precons (for sets that have them, no shade) to explore themes that don't quite make it into the Standard sets (energy in Aetherdrift, proliferate in Edge of Eternities), so a focus on elementals in a precon might indicate that the theme isn't present in the main set.

Rise of the Elementals

It's much too soon for a huge upshift in the price of various elementals, but if this precon has any chops at all, you can expect some key elementals to start spiking pretty soon.

Risen Reef

People have latched onto Risen Reef pretty early, which tracks, since the M20 mythic uncommon is the elemental payoff. It's a prototypical Simic ramp card that puts extra lands into play and draws cards, the only thing Simic was allowed to do for about a 10-year span of card design. Turning every elemental you play into Coiling Oracle is a massive payoff though. No need to go buying a copy now though, since any self-respecting elemental precon should already include the card.

Here are some elemental-coded cards you can either expect to show up in the precon, or expect to see some movement if they're not in the deck:

Aside from direct synergy pieces, there are also just some wildly powerful elementals out there. The whole Cavalier cycle from M20 (Cavalier of Gales, Cavalier of Flame) have the creature type, though their triple-mana casting costs can be a bit rough for a 5-color deck.

The aforementioned MH2 evoke elementals are another batch of powerhouse creatures. Endurance is at an appropriate power level for a Commander precon, but the rest, like Grief and Solitude, are just major annoyances, and it's unlikely they load a precon up with a bunch of free spells.

Outside of cycles, you also have beaters like Maelstrom Wanderer, Jegantha, the Wellspring, and every iteration of Omnath, including the 5-color Omnath, Locus of All, which might get its first reprint here.

Everything's speculative until they officially show off the decks, and at least their face commanders. Both decks have a tag that says “2 new foil mythics”, so there might be some good variation across the commanders, and that hints at a possible additional 5-color elemental commander coming to the game.

uhh the boxes literally say “2 New Foil Mythics” just like they have for the past several years, not 3 foil mythics like you stated in this article.

This has been fixed, thanks for pointing it out (3 came from the initially leaked, blurry photos)
