Lulu, Stern Guardian โ€“ illus. Arou and Gogo, Mysterious Mime โ€“ illus. Lee Woo-chul

If youโ€™ve lost track of how many Final Fantasy x MTG cards have spiked overnight in the last couple of weeks then congratulations, youโ€™re not alone. After the Yojimbo and Ixion spike we covered by the end of last week, it's Lulu, Stern Guardianโ€˜s turn this week. Gogo, Mysterious Mime is in hot pursuit right behind the blue wizard.

Luluโ€™s Sudden Awakening

Early on, dropping a Stun counter on the creature that dares attack you acts like a polite, โ€œPlease choose another targetโ€ sign. And once you're overflowing with (or have infiniteโ€ฆ) mana, Lulu, Stern Guardianโ€˜s activated ability provides proliferate on demand. Which, in turn, has triggered furious demand for her in the last few days:

As with most cards, Lulu's price dropped sharply as pre-release hype cooled โ€“ she was worth $2 way before even Final Fantasy launched. And she stood well below the $3 line until this weekend, when shot overnight by around 250% to trade around $7-$9.

And her inventory is running dry, which suggests that demand outpaces supply:

According to TCGplayer at the time of writing, Lulu trades at around $7 and with a fairly low stock: There are less than 150 copies available, while she has been trading around 50 copies per day during the last month.ย

Why's Lulu so hot all of a sudden? There seems to be three different reasons pushing Lulu, Stern Guardianโ€˜s price upward.

The first is how good she is on her home turf. She hails from Final Fantasy's Counter Blitz Commander precon, heralded by Tidus, Yuna's Guardian. Tidus is himself one of the most popular Final Fantasy commanders, and Lulu shows up in three out of four Tidus decks according to EDHREC.

Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy X Commander Deck - Counter Blitz
  • FINAL FANTASY X-THEMED DECKโ€”Battle your friends with FINAL FANTASY Xโ€™s iconic heroes, villains, and spells with the strategic gameplay of the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game
  • WHEN YOU GOT THE BALL, YOU GOTTA SCORE.โ€”Embark on a journey to Zanarkand alongside Tidus, Yunaโ€™s Guardian as you buff your creatures with counters and pass them around to boost team spirit
  • 25 NEW CARDS plus ALL NEW ARTโ€”All 100 cards in this ready-to-play deck feature new FINAL FANTASY-themed art, including 25 Commander cards entirely new to Magic: The Gathering
  • 2 FOIL LEGENDARY CARDSโ€”Each deck includes 2 Legendary Creature cards with a shiny Traditional Foil treatment that can be played as your commander
  • COLLECT SPECIAL ALT-BORDER CARDSโ€”Each deck also comes with a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack containing 2 alternate-border cards of rarity Rare or higher

But while Lulu, Stern Guardian may proliferate any type of counter, she's specifically good with stun counters. And players are starting to brew with your stun-friendly neighborhood spider โ€“ specifically, Sensational Spider-Man:

Sensational Spider-Man

There's very little we know so far from Marvel's Spider-Man x MTG set as a whole, but reading the card explains the hype. Eat your heart out, Gwen: Spidey just finds Lulu stunning, and early brews with Sensational Spider-Man as commander show Lulu's inclusion rate above 50%.

Thirdโ€ฆ we need to raise our SPOILER WARNING. There were some leaks during the weekend that impacted Lulu's price, but if you do not care for spoilers, you probably want to scroll fast across the following section.

A Poisonous Return

By the end of last week (and coinciding with Lulu's spike), there were some unofficial leaks for Edge of Eternities.

If you'd like to enjoy the EOE reveals at WotC's official pace (they are slated to start next week, on July 8), then what we know officially from WotC is that counters and proliferate will be core to Counter Intelligence, one of Edge of Eternities EDH precons:

Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities - Commander Deck - Counter Intelligence
  • SURPASS YOUR PROGRAMMINGโ€”Boost artifacts and proliferate counters with the aid of interstellar vessel, Inspirit, and its sentient navigational consciousness, Kilo
  • 2 FOIL BORDERLESS COMMANDERSโ€”Every Edge of Eternities Commander Deck includes 2 Traditional Foil Legendary Creature cards featuring Borderless art
  • INTRODUCES 12 COMMANDER CARDSโ€”Each deck introduces 12 never-before-seen Commander cards to Magic: The Gathering
  • COLLECT SPECIAL TREATMENT CARDSโ€”Each deck also comes with a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack containing 1 Traditional Foil card and 1 alt-border Rare or Mythic Rare (foil or nonfoil)
  • THRILLING MULTIPLAYER BATTLESโ€”Commander is a multiplayer way to play Magic, an epic, free-for-all battle full of strategic plays and social intrigue

With Kilo, Apogee Mind in the Command Zone, just looking at the product's description makes it abundantly clear that Lulu, Stern Guardian has a role to play there.

But what was unofficially leaked last week is that the poison mechanic will make a return to Standard. Not just as a Commander-only mechanic, but to EOE's main-set โ€“ and, as we covered yesterday, proliferate cards in general are seeing upwards pressure:

Gogo, in Red Hot Pursuit

While Lulu hogs todayโ€™s spotlight, Gogo, Mysterious Mime is another of the big movers in the MTG card market (and even going for higher prices than Lulu!) while showing a very similar price pattern: Pre-release hyped-up prices close to $20, then a drop to the $2-$3 range where it lingered for weeks, then a huge, sharp spike by the end of last week.

While Gogo, Mysterious Mime dropped a bit yesterday, he also shows a very similar pattern to Lulu's when it comes to supply and demand: He traded about 50 copies daily last month, and there's existing inventory to only cover about 4 days (around 200 copies).

Savvy Magic players saw this one coming, but demand seems to be organic (rather than a buyout) โ€“ Gogo did spike last weekend, but he's been moving steadily since Final Fantasy released. He hails from Revival Trance, another of Final Fantasy's EDH precons, is very popular with the precon's face commander, Terra, Herald of Hope, and is proving quite the charmer among casual players.

โ€œI love this card because it's amazing when it works, but it's not an auto-slot,โ€ writes u/PinnedPhoenix. โ€œI think Gogo will become a โ€œsoftโ€ staple piece in non-competitive builds, similar in popularity to Brash Taunter, for similar reasons: not great everywhere, but he can steal the show now and then.โ€

What Will Happen With Gogo's and Lulu's Price?

With our usual caveat that this is not investment advice (always do your own research, folks!), the price graphs and above all the low inventories speak of demand barely keeping up with supply, with is usually reason enough to expect prices to not go down short-term.

Both Lulu and Gogo are looking very popular among casual Commander players, and Lulu has specific synergy not just with one, but with two of the upcoming Magic sets โ€“ there's little we know, officially, about Edge of Eternities, and even less about Spider-Man, but WotC early reveals about both sets show synergy with counters.

(And, there's last weekend's leaks, but we won't talk about those in case you just scrolled all the way down here to avoid them!).

At any rate, looks clear that cloning and counters are hot!
